Travel / Poland in photo riddles [3134]

Firstly, I have lived in this country for 40 years and seldom met a person who refused to eat carp.

It's all to do with the cooking - but - carp was cheap - because it was quick growing. But zero taste, apart from what it was cooked in. And those fecking bones!!!!!!!!!!!

Secondly it's not slav food, the Jews introduced it.

Now that the country is richer, no one in their right mind would eat it unless they are Kaczynski supporters (traditional stick in the muds, as carp are.

I always insist the MIL ofeers sandacz and kreguelnia too at Xmas - and good sport as she is - she does me proud :)

PS Answer to photo: Sandomierz?

Life / Cold winter in Poland this year - Gas Shortages as of Late October [32]

Anyway when is heating by coal going to be made illegal?

i'm sick of coughing my guts up every winter, even in the so called Middle class detached suburbs.

It is a sick joke. Literally.

Poland is still in the Dark Ages and thr government seriously needs to get an education and get some EU grants kicking in to replace coal in urban areas. An absolute priority number one in my book. Never mind the politics of "but the miners......." Fcuck em.

Rant over.

Life / Cold winter in Poland this year - Gas Shortages as of Late October [32]

Anyway when is heating by coal going to be made illegal?

what do you propose to use instead?

Gas, nuclear (in ten years), renewables, geothermal, biomass (that one very very limited), hydro-electric (even if outmoded), insulating roof spaces for christs sake ( grants for the same), Scandinavian stoves in the home and any low temperature wood fires banned (pine is a dangerous carcinogen, evenmore so than the dreaded brown coal).

The only reason Poland burns coal domestically today is because the Health Service is cheap and by definition, crap . If you have respiratory disease or cancer that's fine by the Polish government because that means employment for the myriad of dinosaur cottage hospitals scattered around and a living for all the ancillary staff. The second reason is because it's "tradition to burn coal". Nothing to do with that old Polish politicians' excuse for doing nothing ........... "niestety........nie mamy pieniadze....... " (Excuse no Polish fonts, English OP..)

Both excuses are to be stamped on and I am looking forward to Brussels nailing the Poles for continuing to tolerate domestic use of coal - by refusing to grant bigger aid to households to employ different fuels and/or to introduce a carbon tax and/or prohibition.

The reduction in pulmonary disorders would pay for grants in savings to the Health Service - but as politics and priorities are so fukked up in Poland (or should I say - Silesia. where I live - at the moment) - I dont hold out much hope. Grr

Doesn't this subject bother you Sean, living in ole Gleiwitz?

News / POLAND IS 4TH BEST PLACE TO LIVE IN EUROPE [60]

A couple Of Budweisers or Old Speckled Hen (on offer at 6.99 in Auchan) change ones' perspective. :) Plus, the sun is shining, and all is up for grabs.

Me, I'll just sit back and enjoy a slow weekend, which is what brought me to Poland in the first place 18 summers ago.

News / No de-Communisation in Poland? [41]

I don't think it's any surprise that those who are obsessed with communists tend to be the ones who have spent their whole life making excuses and complaining. Or indeed, they aren't even in the country.

I take exception to that remark Delph - my in law didn't take the card when "offered" and was shafted double by not being made mine director and also like the huge huge majority had all property confiscated by the state.

And yes, he still disses the old boys on the street who did the people's deputy shite. He's entitled to look down his nose at those kunts.

Mazowiecki and his cohorts sold people like him. And to make excuses for Poland and mantain it was alright that the crims held on their stolen wealth is immoral. Just for straters - we all know if this was Britain the ole president with his sunglasses would not be living in biography funded retirement, but would be languishing in a dungeon - or worse.

Frankly surprised at you Delph - defending the Polish propensity to do nothing if at all possible, but you are so right in that it is now too late........

It wont stop the likes of me spitting at anybody and starting a ruck with anybody in a certain village town that my in laws point out as zomo or ex party.

News / No de-Communisation in Poland? [41]

The problem with the "Ex party" tag is that many people were members just to give their family a better life, or indeed to keep their jobs.

No no no! Inexcusable - though my father in law gave that view I am more extreme and would have demonised such people - that is crap and you know it - my father in law didn't get to the very top without the Party but still managed to buy a flat in TysiacLecia and build his house with his bare hands without the Scum's card.

Nobody with any credence would have joined that mob. It seems our discussion is at a crossroads :))

I don't like my father in law in some ways (catholic and all that) But he's a thoroughly decent human being and a gentle man and I admire him for (politely) and determiedly turning don a party card when the rewards were great.

And I know enough people in Katowice who lost their posts at the university and other institutes - these people should still be lauded today- and I would not in any way support those who took the easy option to "change the system form within"

That was just opportunist bull shite(I foget this is an American forum LOL ).
You seem to be with the Poland of "that never really existed". I am a Platforma "voter", but we must not forget the Scum of Polish society.

In my view.

Life / How to Politely Refuse a Drink in Poland [72]

LOL PP :))

I always head for the beer garden when that kicks off. After all - in old 80's Poland, when I was at such shindigs, beer was not considered to be alcohol.

Lol - I was a great deal pissed when I wrote that last post.

But:

I share the opinion of my Polish family of the last 21 years - Civil War? A joke excuse for doing nothing, almost as bad a joke as selling out at the Round Table talks.

Czechoslowakia and Eastern Germany did it right - nailing their commies.

Poland, as ever, woosed out.

News / Smoking ban in Polish bars and restaurants (AT LAST!) [400]

Cigarette smoking impinges on the lives of those I care for - through passive smoking. And you ont need a Science degree to know that "seperate" smoking and non smoking areas are actully even more dangerous.

Outlaw the danger as in the UK - but also make smokers pay for their treatment themselves, I would expect if I need a new liver because of boozing.

Simples. Smoker need a big boot up the arse, and I would be happy to apply that boot - and told to shove off to their own property if thy want to pollute the air that we all share.

News / Smoking ban in Polish bars and restaurants (AT LAST!) [400]

'm not up to date on Polish finances (but would expect them to be similar) but in the UK smokers pay more than enough tax to cover the cost of their illnesses

No Harry that is palpably not true. Give us statistics. Plenty of social think tanks have sat on this question and found that smokers who contract cancers are bleeding the NHS dry.

In a country like Britain that spends 11 per cent or more of it' GDP on the NHS that is one thing - but Poland, for some astonishing reason, spends FOUR per cent of GDP on it's NHS - and I dont want my tax wasted on smokers who bring their misfortune on themselves to some degree.

Of course in Poland the government are also guilty and provide very little help for people to quit. Still, it's down to personal choice and if anyone smokes ovr my dinner and refuses a polite request to knock it on the head they will risk my 53 year old fury :)) At the very least I will refuse to pay the bill because the estblishment is relinquishing it's health responsibility.

Bollox to this Polish Liberum veto and "it' our right."

A right to live like feral animals? Dont think so.

t's your right to do so. Kick people out of your non smoking private establishment, you make the rules in your joint. You pay the rent, pay the taxes, do the marketing, it's your right.

Convex - if people are smoking at the table next to me and my crowd, and we were there first, and they are smoking it thick, we politely ask them to move.

If they dont, we might just start a ruck on occasion

Disgusting selfish habit.

News / Smoking ban in Polish bars and restaurants (AT LAST!) [400]

I agree - at last. One of the reasons I stopped frequenting such premises was the nasty odour of smoke.

You are missing the point Pawian - the pub will still smell of smoke - OK, so it's a step in the right direction to have seperate smoking rooms, if that is hat they are saying - but why not ban smoking entirely?

How about fat people? Thoughts on that terrible epidemic?

The same. If they cant stop stuffing themselves, they pay for treatment.

I drink. I try to stop for 4 to 5 months in the year both for professional and health reasons. It's called willpower.

If I get out of order on the drink I always endeavour to take myself off somewhere private. Smokers dont do this, and Poland has this nasty stinking acceptance of carcinogens.

I dont.

You mentioned something about selfishness?

What privat premises do you run? smoking is bnned in my schools through law, but my porter still does, and I tolerat it becasue it' t night and he's a cracking bloke and I wouldn't want to lose him.

But, public bar or restaurant, if somebody i blowing smoke in my direction, be it flash git or bimbo, I will ask them to refrain, and be prepared in the case of it being abloke to insist.

Your premises coul be private, but if they are open to the public then you have a duty to that client to take reasonble steps.

IMO

apologies for typing in the dark.....

Why don't you exercise your freedom of choice and go to a non smoking bar?

What about your staff and others who have no choice in the matter? Anyway, are you going to have a separate room for smokers, or just a separate space? The second option i even more dangerous, as said.

Of course I choose my bar sensibly, but I cant do that for my 18 year old non- smoker daughter. In the fun places, there is lot of smoke, and I worry about her health.

As you do about yours'. Are you suggesting there is no danger - and that 18 year olds either realise or care?

You're talking shite Harry and you know it :))

So now people dying earlier is a good thing? so you wish that on your loved ones LOL !

A news item on the BBC wont wash - linkl to NHS figures please if you are going to make spurious claims about the so called "advantages to the taxpayer" of people smoking themsleves and others into an early grave. :(

I fail to see though whre the two figures are united by context though Harry. We, the UK, spend billions on a nuclear deterrent, and it's money well spent, but we haven't had a nuclear war.

Conversely, money spent on cancer therapy doesn't equate in any way to the revenues raised on smoking.

I'm a bit pissed now ( at home, being pleasant to my loving family, not spoiling anyone elses' enjoyment either) which is probably why I cant see the excuse for smokers saying - " I've got cancer caused by my smoking - please help me NHS - it's my right - because I paid a lot of money in".

LOL - you know that's a senseless argument, and there are others far more deserving of NHS funding - Alzheimers patients for one.

Amathyst:

Show me a decent Polish beer and I'll drink it. Czech beer is probably the best in the world after some English real ales.

So....? And dont go on about your Polish chemical shite please mate.

Polish vodka is a world leader, as is Polish rye-bread.

Beer is a big NO NO. Don't be offended. We hve ugly women. ( a generalisation - ugly men too - I checked in the mirror)

Treating fat fuckkers like you

Tut tut. Now behave yourself
First of all, we are having a debate - if you cant handle it - fair enough. But dont come the aggressive islander with me.

86 kilos is fat for me because I'm 3 kilos over my ideal. No need for personal insults though. I dont insult anybody on here intentionally and am not going to take it from you.

News / Smoking ban in Polish bars and restaurants (AT LAST!) [400]

Ww've all had this debate about smokers vs fatties. Two wrongs dont make a right.

My missus was nearly wiped out by a black car driver doing 200 on Chorzowska in Katowice on Tuesday who lost control of his car, leaving her a hospital case and requiring tranquilisers.

If I had been there I would have dragged him from his car and beaten him within an inch of his life, no doubt about it, as his type are above the law.

I would have been banged up, as we all have to pay for our actions. Personal weaknesses such as over-indulging and expecting the State to rescue us, should be the same.

Harry in his desperation is trying to label me a fatty because I booze. Due to a mtb accident I dont do sports anymore but at 6 ft plus and 86 kilos i wouldn't call that fat. Beer gut - yes.

I agree about fat people who cant control their habit not being funded - but I agree with certain NHS trusts who challenge their obligation to provide expensive cancer treatment to smokers.

I could quote plenty of staistics that have a contary ( and probably equally skewed) viewpoint to the criteria of the BBC article.

My position is that passive smoking kills and I dont need the Britih Medical ouncil or it's Polish equivalent to tell me that simple truth, when I return from a booze with my clothes stinking and with a smokers' cough.

Luckily Katowice is an up and coming area and they recognise the danger,s and most bars that I frequent have taken radical steps already.

Casual racism to round the evening off, lovely. Isn't it time you toddled off to bed?

LOL - You have lived in Warsaw too long. Get off your liberal high horse and you wont jump to ssilly conclusions, but might actually read the post.

We hate drivers of expensive black cars here in Silesia. On government work no doubt.

PS If the driver were black - he in all probablity would not be Polish - ergo would not be driving like a complete maniac. Do you drive, or are you being obtuse through choice?

History / Polish martyrology during WW2 - today`s monuments [54]

Do you think that when we have rememberence day in the UK or we have our silence on 11/11 at the 11th hour? Oh and if you think the people of Coventry have forgiven the Germans you can think again! So at least we have comments like this on this thread, which shows that Poles do in fact possess balls as well as a forgiving nature.

The Poles might have a forgiving nature - but as the father of one said Pole I prefer for her to live in the present - such as in safe air in discotheque, rather than her going on a school coach tour of almost every Nazi concentration camp - she's not stupoid and knows about the past.

But it's the past - the present and the future matter at least equally - but are more difficult to arrange than some monuments about the past or thousands of Katyn 70 years on billboards.

As before, sick of Polish self-pity. Plenty of my Polish pals agree with the point - including my best pal Mrs Dougpol, whose grandfather was terminated in Auschwitz like so many.

I'm all for memorials, but if as much were spent on ruined buildings as on memorials or churches, then we would all be the richer. Just a thought.

I'm a tax payer Pawian so shall continue to offer an opinion - but thanks for your concern.

No Convex - Harry would be dismissive, because I can't find the source of my assertion right now - but you probably know that it was proved that Pizza Huts' "initiative" was actually more dangerous in terms of carcinogens in the air than keeping the whole place as it was before.

Any chemists out there? Isin't a "partition coefficeient" or something along those lines, where two or more chemical laden air masses collide and set up all sorts of physical and chemical reactions...?

History / Polish martyrology during WW2 - today`s monuments [54]

Bollox

The people in the past had plenty of balls - and alot of what this generation doesn't - and that is class. They would not admire this type of self serving sadness.

My father in law for example is a true gent. He lost his murdered father, barely escaped with his 14 year old life across the fields with his best pair of 14 year old shoes when tipped off by the Post Office boy who read the telegram by chance, that the Gestapo were coming for him that very hour, like his fatherr before him, dragged by his hysterical mother over 200 kilometres of Nazi infested mud to relatives in Kielce ,from Dabrowa Gornicza, not eating for 6 whole days, permanently damaging his bleeding feet, and living out the rest of the war in hiding, and hated and despised by those distant relatives who were bound by God to "care" for him.

Does he ever bang on about it? No - because the man has some pride - and class. Which others could take but a slice off.

PS Good points Convex - I love Poland an ill not return to Blighty but lets not hav too much of this "Poland th victim" and never in the wrong, just to remind others of "tiny little" betrayals Poland has been guilty of in the past - such as invading Czechoslowakia - but that's all right - because "our communit leaders did it - not us"

Some connection there, with a country not too far away to the west.......
