News / Russian air traffic controllers ignored communication protocol of Polish pilots? [194]

Very close, if not identical ...

Not exactly identical, but perfectly understandable for a Russian who hear Polish speech.

And even more, on my own experience and by opinions of my friends with which I ever discussed this, for a Russian speaking person more than 50% of Polish words is understandable almost immediately (once one will concentrate on what it _sounds_ in Russian, not how it _written_ in Russian). For the ones who know Ukrainian or Belarussian (even litle bit) even more words understandable immediately.

If I don't understand something, it is often enough to ask for some synonim to understand.

There is some words than really can lead to confusion, though. Sounds similar, but have very different meaning. For example, Polish "Uroda" and Russian "Urod"... ;) If you want to say to a Russian girl about their beauty in Polish, words should be selected with care. ;)

News / Is it possible that Polish president was assasinated? If so then, by whom? [921]

But then again, there are the likes of George H.W. Bush :)

Believe me, with proper PR and really good funding it is possible to elect almost any idiot for a president, and there is no problems at all with son of former president that shows just a little signs of disorder. ;)

Democracy, as an idea, has one fundamental problem. For example, if you need to solve some question that related to physics. and MUST do this by voting, why (for example) Albert Einstein should have same single vote as drunk degenerate from nearby bar?

With top politics, there is a lot to lose if wrong person is elected. But there is again, vote of drunk degenerate have same weight as vote of bright intellectual.

I think it's obvious.

The most obvious things is not always correct. There is _lots_ of ways how it can be done. You can spend rest of your life speculating about it (I suspect that you already started this lifetime career). And looks like there is no arguments that may change mind of a beleiver.

The majority of people (the ones without fog in their minds) will wait for more information before making final decision.

I wasn't born yesterday.

Surely. I would bet - not less than 14-15 yrs ago, since so fluent English in addition to native Polish takes some time.. ;) Or it was Polish in addition to native English? ;) If so, I will double lower limit - Polish is not so easy to learn.

News / Russian air traffic controllers ignored communication protocol of Polish pilots? [194]

usatoday.com/travel/flights/2010-04-13-fog-plane-crash-poland_N.htm

The Polish jet that crashed short of a runway in fog, killing that nation's president and other top leaders, was equipped with a safety device that warns pilots when they get too close to the ground, the device's manufacturer said Tuesday.

The existence of the device deepens the mystery of why the jet struck woods and exploded as pilots attempted to land Saturday at a Russian military airport, aviation safety experts said. If the safety device was working properly, it would be the first such crash of an aircraft equipped with the system since its introduction in the late 1990s.

And remember how Georgia was punished for joining NATO?

1. Georgia never joined NATO. There was just some talk about it. But now NATO leaders will think twice, if not triple times, before continue to deal with Georgian leaders.

2. Georgia was punished not for joining NATO or plans to do so. Georgian military commanded Georgian peacekeepres, that was on same positions as Russian peacekeepers, to silently withdraw, and then opened gunfire to russian peacekeepers and Tchinvali civil buildings. You'll find the rest (with lots of photos) on the Net.

3. Concerning South Ossetia and Abkhazia - better read something before saying that it is legally part of Georgia. Especially about referendums in beginning of 1991 and their results, that was completely ignored by gerogian nationalists that take control over Georgia that time.

I am very curious to know if there was functioning ILS equipment present at Smolensk the week prior when Vlad the Putin landed there... and, if so, what happened to it?

I was told that there is no ILS, as this airstrip is just recently "converted" from military airbase.

Another airport near Smolensk (Smolensk-South) is now defunct, and technically can accept only light regional planes, too short strip, ancient navigation aids. It was planned to be modernized sometime around 2011 to be usable for modern jets.

BTW, just Googled/Wiki'd Smolensk airstrip; looks like it's abou tthe size of a regional airstrip in the States... hell, the Russians even had IL-76's (50-ton transporters) staioned there until last fall... hmmm....

You can see those ILs on sat photo. Locals told that some of them is already somewhat parted (maybe those nearing end of their flight resource, or how max. limit of flight hours and landings can be correctly named in English).

I was really surprised why such city as Smolensk does not have decent airport. Asked my friend who born near Smolensk... Answer was simple - almost no demand.

Smolensk is not so far from Moscow, main hub in european Russia. And there is lots of trains, both direct Smolensk-Moscow and passing (Warsaw, Berlin, Vilnius, Minsk, Brest, etc...). You can come to railway station and get ticket to nearest train, day or night. In about 6 hours you are almost in center of Moscow.

With plane (especially with all that modern security measures) it would take about 3-3.5 hours to get to VNO or DME, and then add at least one hour to reach center of Moscow or at least 2-2.5 hours during daytime to reach SVO. Almost no gain in time, weather dependant and more expensive than train.

"Gnat" is slang for pistol.

Will we see any proof link? Or we should think that you are talking about some parallel world with different russian language.

BTW, I finally found the word "gnat" in one of slang dictionaries. Attributed to drug consumers subculture, means "Jew"... ;)

By the way, "gnat'" mean not very polite way to drive someone from some place. It may mean even something forceful or somewhat threatening. So. I can imagine few shots to air just to get full attention of crowd that is so shocked or nervous, so cannot understand words of law enforcement official at once. But I never seen that by myself during my life, just heard about one such case. Police officer that shot at least once from their weapon during their duty shift is already somewhat in trouble. Investigation is mandatory, and they will need to prove that their use of weapon was legal and necessary. So, it is highly unlikely, but still possible.

I simply do not have speakers on this computer to hear soundtrack of this flick. Maybe someone can separate soundtrack from flick and amplify it by some software that used to recover old recordings?

But I don't believe that Satan came by train.

Why not? When I was little boy, I thinked that metro tunnels is very-very long and if someone will go by that tunnels far enough, they may even come to hell. ;) That was until I get to tunnel past end station with my father's friend who worked there, and seen its end by my own eyes. ;) I was 5 yrs old or so that time. ;)

Yes, it sounds similar to train - but different anyway, less "bass" .

It is one of three types of siren that I seen on fire trucks in Moscow. This one was looking like a short square horn extending from box where compressor is located. Purely pneumatical, gives constant tone, slightly changing in beginning while there is lower air pressure. quite directional - very errating to ear when you stand ahead the truck, but much less loud from sides and back. Usually seen this on older truck based on ZIL or GAZ cargo truck chassis.

Another one with two horns, starts from one tone and in a few seconds switch to alternating lower and higher tone (tones changed every approx half second or so).

Third type is somewhat mystery for me, as I heard as loud siren sound was changed by somewhat distorted by still understandable voice announcement. Maybe some hybrid electro-pneumatic system. Was unable to get close to look at this truck (imported for sure, longer truck with large reservoir at back).

National standard GOST R 50574-2002 "Automobiles, buses and motorcycles of emergency services. Colours diagrams, identification symbols, inscriptions, special light and sound signals. General requirements"

protect.gost.ru/document.aspx?control=7&baseC=101&RegNum=11&DocOnPageCount=15&page=1&id=130340

98 scanned pages total. Requirements to special sound signals is on page 11. From new systens it is required to have "western style" dual alternating tone siten (alternating every 0.5 - 6 sec, tones within 150-2000 Hz band). At same time later chapter approved use of "Air Horn" and "Short Siren" signals (possibly because there is still a lot of older equipment and it is not economical to replace signals on older cars/trucks).

By the way, if someone collecting car models and wish to paint their Lada model to colours of russian road police or other emergrncy service - this standart is a very good guide, all drawings is there. ;)

I would have to hear it be able to offer a valid opinion.

I was unable to quickly find recording with such type of siren. Everywhere in sounds libraries is more modern "western type" dual-tone signals. If you can find some russian films from 1960's-1980's where fire trucks at work is pictured, almost certainly it will be such type of single-tone signal.

If memory serves me correctly, in film "Укрощение огня" ("Taming the fire" or "Wildfire" in English translations, 1972, film about early stages of Soviet space program) there was scene where fire trucks speeding to a rocket start position after accident, with such a signal. If I will be able to find that disk tomorrow, I'll try to cut this fragment. Not sure that I still have it, though.

You live next door to Kremlin? lol ;-)

Not always a joke. I used to live (since I was born to 1981) in a building within 200-300 meters from Kremlin, with windows looking to Borovitskie gates and Big Stone Bridge.

Not a best place to live, of course.

Can agree with this. But I don't think there are too much really new trucks, maybe a lot after complete restoration. Fire trucks in a small city (and especially in airports) have not so much use, constantly parked in a dry and somewhat heated box, and very well cared of. So, 20-30 years is not so much for a chassis. Maybe modern foam generators has to be installed, all aged rubber parts in engine and transmission replaced to new, and repainted all around.... Will work like new for more many years.
