Language / Problems remembering Polish vocabulary [20]

Cześć!

Hi, all this is my first post, have had about 6 Polish lessons so far and all going pretty well. It is still early days but I am happy with my progress so far. My main problem though is remembering vocabulary. I will often look up a word in my dictionary to realise that I should have know it all along! Any tips on remembering new words. I am thinking of putting post it notes on objects all around my flat :)

Any tips greatly received.

Thanks for the links they sound great, will try them out over the weekend, might stop me looking less crazy trying to repeat words on the train to work :)

Hey Olaf. Getting hold of some simple books sounds like a good idea. Strangely I seem to be quite good at reading and translating text. So perhaps the TV idea would be good to help hear the words more in use. Do you know if you can watch Polonia TV on the net in UK?

Thanks for the TVP link convex. Have found some dual language polish/english books on Amazon but the comics idea sounds cool, sure the pics will help ;)

Yes Mira, I think you are right I sure do remember words more that I have written and repeated. Often words that I can associate with a situation seem to stick in my mind too...

Many words are very easy to learn for an English speaker

Yes, some are similar and therefore much easier to remember.

My vocabulary training program keeps track of which words I've forgotten the most times.

I will certainly check out this training programme if it highlights words that you are forgetting the most, sounds like a great way to concentrate more on what you need to.

UK, Ireland / Dialing a polish mobile from a uk mobile in Poland [7]

I just changed from Orange to Vodafone, and could no longer text my girl in Poland, but after a bit of Google searching I found that putting 00 in front of the number it started working again :)

Love / How to convince English boyfriend to learn Polish? [39]

It is strange for me to think that he will not even learn to say, please and thankyou etc. For me this is something I would do when visiting any country, just to be polite.

I met my girlfriend whilst on holiday on the black sea coast of Romania, and when I first visited her in Poland I made sure I could at least say hello, and thankyou, especially as I knew her parents did not speak any English. They were pleasantly suprised at the few words I knew, and I suprised her friends with a na zdrowie, when we met at a bar as well.

Since this visit I have started having lessons in the UK, and of course it is very hard, but every small amount learnt, to me opens up doors in the relationship and an understanding, of what I am finding a great culture and people to spend time with.

Perhaps your boyfriend, is worried that he will find the language too hard, but I agree with Softsong's thoughts, and in my opinion when you make the effort, but sometimes pronounce the Polish words wrong and friends and family laugh, it is the best way of breaking the ice and having fun.

Good luck with everything Agata. I hope he becomes more curious, as it has opened my eyes, and now as well as my weekly Polish lesson, I get some of my food from the Polski Sklep too. Gotta have my fix of Pierogi and Barszcz, even if it is not fresh. Thanks, and yes I hope she does :)
