Language / Etymology of samochod and other related automotive words [12]

So I have to a do a project for school which involves me picking a topic in any slavic language and discussing in a 5-7 page paper where certain words related to that topic came from. I chose Polish bo mówie po Polsku and I chose the topic of cars bo mam obsesje z samochodami. Anyway I need to find the origins of certain car related words in Polish. Anyone know where to look? or can help me with this?

Heres some words I was thinking of:

samochód
zawieszenie
paliwo
silnik
hamulce
opony
katalizator

Language / Etymology of samochod and other related automotive words [12]

o and zawieszenie is zawieszić! ok I should have thought of that in the first place. But are there any Polish words relating to cars that have been borrowed? I suppose "turbo." Ok diękuje bardzo Lyzko.

A czy jest jakiesz książek albo cos na internecie gdzie mogę znaleźć etymology w Polskim słow?

Also in addition to doing this in Polish I need to do the same thing in another slavic language and compare the same words in Polish. I was thinking about doing a simple language that is similar to Polish..Czech?

Thankyou

So for my slavic final I will be given a paragraph translated into 13 different Slavic languages and I have to tell which language it is and why..

I was wondering if anyone knew of a website dedicated to showing the differences bettween all of them. I speak Polish so Polish, Czech, and Slovak I know but the cyrilic ones are a different story

Dziękuje!!

Language / Polish and other slavic language differences [60]

Ya I know I will be able to tell which language is which but the big thing is giving many examples as to why. The only way I will be able to know which cyrilic languages are which is because of the accents over certain letters. The languages are Russian, Ukrainian, Czech, Slovak, Polskiego, Upper Sorbian, Lover Sorbian, Slovenian, Hrvatski (croatian), Serbian, Bulgarian, Macedonian, Belarussian, and Polabian.

Language / Polish and other slavic language differences [60]

Well the Cyrillic langurages will all be in cyrillic so I will be able to distinguish them only because of the accents they use over their letters (macedonian has no accents). Will message crow thanks!!

Law / The Stock Exchange - Poland (GPW ... or WSE). Do you invest? [34]

Merged: Investing in Polish Stock Market

Within the next year I was planning on investing in the Polish stock market. Anyone have any feedback or advice? I read a thread on this which was from 2007 and it mentioned that it wasn't very wise due to lack of conduct codes in businesses, but its been a few year and I'm noticing that companies' revenues are multiplying at an accelerated rate. What do you guys think?

Work / Part time English speaking jobs in Krakow? [5]

Hey guys I am going to be studying in Krakow in a year and I was wondering if I would be able to find a part time job where I may use my english. My Polish is decent and basic but I can't use advanced vocabulary yet. I was thinking maybe an international hotel in Krakow? I love travel so maybe something at the airport in Krakow? I am going to study business and this job isn't so much about making money but more about building my resume for the future. Thank you!

Study / Bachelors in Civil / Mechanical Engineering Degree in Poland [39]

Merged: Mechanical Engineering Universities in Poland, Erasmus Programme

Which Universities in Poland have good programs where I can earn a bachelors degree in mechanical engineering? Polytechnika Warszawska has every engineering degree besides mechanical from what I can see... Any others anyone know about? AGH?

My final goal is to try and get my masters in Automotive Design in Germany (Aachen University most likely). I could get my bachelors there but I don't know anyone Germany and I have family and friends all over Poland (not to mention i speak it).

It would make sense though to study cars in Germany... what do you guys think?

Law / Buying a car in Poland or Germany? [36]

Hey guys I am studying in Poland and I am looking to buy a car. It will be a 2000-2003 audi or bmw diesel (2.5 tdi v6 or 330d). But anyway, should I go to Germany to buy the car and bring it back to Poland or should I find one already in Poland from Germany? If I go to Germany I will have to register the car back in Poland and pay alot of taxes... Not sure where to buy. Are there dealers who import cars? My location is just south of Krakow in Nowy Sacz.

Thanks for the help

Food / Refried Beans and taco seasoning to buy in Nowy Sacz [7]

Are there refried beans in Poland? I am trying to make 7 layer bean dip and I can find avacodo (for guacamole), sour cream, cheddar chease, olives, tomatos, and onions, just missing the refried beans.

Also I need taco seasoning. Is there anything like this here or a substitute that would be close?

I am in Nowy Sacz and I think Tesco is my best bet to find this stuff. I will go to Krakow if I have to though.

Thank you!

Law / Exchanging a foreign / international driver's license to Polish ... [12]

Merged: International Drivers License while temporarily living in Poland

Hey guys I want to get a termporary drivers license in Poland. How can I do this? I am already here and I heard in the U.S. only AAA can issue one but there are many websites that claim they can provide one but the only thing those websites do is translate your current license into Polish, so wouldn't I just be able to translate my American prawo jazdy into Polish?

News / Why are many Poles anti-Euro2012 [16]

ok thanks. Ya I got the impression that they didn't like it because someone was being treated unfairly?

I think it will be huge business for the country. Can just imagine every pub, hotel, and store packed the entire time. We will see. I accidentally was in the rynek in Krakow when Cracowia and Wisla were supposed to play each other and the hundreds of police seemed to handle it pretty well. The craziest thing I've ever seen from the sports world though haha

Work / NEW TO POLAND (Student in KRAKOW). Life questions. [8]

Temperature here is not so bad right now, in the 60's yesterday but it will fall pretty quick. Winter gets down to sub-zero frequently so bring a ton of warm clothes. Clothing in Poland is as much or even more expensive than in the U.S. so I would just do shopping at home if I were you although there is this swap meat on weekends called the Tomeks where you can find cheaper clothing but as you may guess the quality might not be that great.

Not sure about the musical instrument shops but I'm sure you can google that part and find alot of stuff.

Law / Selling product to restaurants/ supermarkets [7]

Hey guys my friend owns a business in Italy producing cheese and wants me to help him present his product to restaurants and supermarkets in Poland. How should I go about contacting the owners/ managers?

I can speak and write Polish pretty well, just wondering if I should just go to Real or Tesco's website and shoot them an email with info to set up a meeting along with restaurant owners or just show up and hand them an information booklet on the product.

Law / How to register a new business in Poland [129]

Merged: Registering a business in Poland

Hey guys I want to register a business in Poland and send products from Poland to China with my colleague. Where do I start? I just got my Polish citizenship so I think that will make it easier for me. I know I need to get a nip number but how should I do that and do I do this after I register my business or at the same time?

Also what are the costs of registering a business. I have been told that it costs 1500 zloty to register a business here. Is this true?

Law / Millennium bank question [13]

Hi guys, so I have an account with Millennium bank in Poland and I just had a quick question. I know Millennium bank is originally Portuguese and we know their economic situation, things aren't looking so good for them. So with the situation in Cyprus with the proposed "haircut" bailout which didn't go through of course, but if they ever did want to do something like that in Portugal and it did go through, would they be able to take money from my Millennium bank account in Poland or is it a separate branch with no affiliation to the Portuguese branch?

Law / Poland and the Euro - benefit for Polish economy? [49]

So I heard more talk on the news today about Poland joining the Eurozone by 2015. I was just wondering if it would have a positive impact on the Polish economy or not with all the problems other eurozone countries are having. Also inversely, would it benefit the Eurozone alot by having Poland join in?

Thanks
