Language / New free funny video lessons of the Polish language on YT [9]

If you know some words you can get an idea of what is happening and look up the words that you don't know, it is easier to remember things that are funny sometimes.

New word:
rarytas, 3:28, : rarity(the second r sound must be what they talk about when they say rolling your Rs.)

Language / Learning Polish...looking for a software package? [10]

I recommend BYKI also, I have the full version and I can add my own flash cards when I need to remember something. It is a good place to start but making your own flash cards is labour intensive.

After a while I recommend that you get Polish lessons through skype or in person etc. Are there still Polish soldiers in Afganistan?

Language / IRC channel for Polish language learning? [3]

I don't know of any IRC channel that will help you learn Polish. I think that most of these channels will be similiar to english speaking channels anyway inmho, lots of text speak which isn't really proper english or polish. I think that forums or comments on you tube videos have better language content. Best of luck.

Love / Need language help - Asking permission from Polish parents in law [4]

Grataluję i powodzenia. Congratulations and good luck.

I am very sorry but unless you have a good level of Polish it won't be possible to carry out a two conversation expressing your intentions, hopes for the future etc., but you could say things that they will understand which I am sure that you already know.

Instead of kocham cię say kocham ją etc. I love her instead of I love you. Someone else more know more things that you would like to say, maybe your girlfriend will help you? I am sure she won't mind hearing how much you love her etc.

And just to use all the polite forms, Pani, Pan, don't use ty or any of the 2nd person endings etc when addressing her parents. I am sure that you know this also.

Life / Homosexuality in Polish Culture [231]

I don't know much about Polish culture and nothing about being gay but my own guess is that it isn't too popular on any building site in any country. Maybe he should just find a new profession.

Love / Hopeful to date Polish woman [39]

Hi Jerry,

I think that it would be a mistake to just limit yourself to Polish women and miss out on meeting someone great. Women are the same all over the world as far as I know, some good, some bad, some happy, some sad, there are cultural differences but I don't think that these cultural differences are key to happiness.

How Polish must she be? What does it mean to be Polish? Is having a Polish passport good enough? Does she need to speak Polish? Does she need to know how to cook bigos? Does she need to have lived in Poland for x years?

Classifieds / Hi I'd like to learn Polish via MSN messenger.....I can help you with your English [5]

Hi Rocky,

my own advise would be to pay for some lessons, this way you will make best use of your time and learn the most. My own experience is that unless you are a teacher it is extremely difficult to teach grammer, most native speakers(non teachers/linguists) don't know the grammer of their own language, they know how to speak it properly, know what sounds correct but cannot explain it, I am the same, a child can speak perfectly well but couldn't tell you about grammer.

Language / chodźmy vs idźmy? [32]

chodźmy v idźiemy? Idziemy also

I understand idziemy, you can say this for example when you are going to the shop on foot with another person. Maybe I have this wrong?

idź stąd, go from this place, leave, a command
idźmy, how can we command ourselves? How can we order ourselves to do something?

But chodzić has me confused.
chodzę do kina, I go to the cinema,
Chodzimy do kina, we go to the cinema

chodźmy? where can you say this? Again I don't understand how we can order ourselves to do something if this is what it is, the imperative mode?

Language / Need Advice On Polish-English language barrier (my Polish boyfriend and his family) [59]

Hi Mina,

If you need to learn Polish I think the Hurra books are good also, you will be able to learn it as you have learnt languages already. It is possible to get Polish lessons also through skype from a teacher and I think that a teacher is a good idea: hurra+po+polsku&tag=googiehydra

There are many resources on you tube/the internet also that you can use:

youtube.com/user/magauchsein#p/c/8C03C5A0291714DC/12/0H1MHB bFR4E
plotek.pl/plotek/0,0.html
feeds.feedburner.com/PolishWordOfTheDay
wiadomosci.onet.pl/kiosk/nauka/uwaga-na-wage-malucha,1,4777475,wiadomosc.html

This one from onet.pl, you can click and a woman reads the text, it should help with pronunciation.

best of luck

Maybe when you visit next you can do something together, cook something, have a laugh, maybe there is one person in his family who would be open to teaching you some Polish?

American possibly speaking Arabic but having the crack anyway:

Language / My struggle learning the Polish language [10]

Hi AJ,

Maybe you need to slow down, speak very clearly, don't speak too fast, some people also just have a block when they hear a foreign accent or if you say something out of context they think that you are saying something else when what they hear is actually what you are saying but they don't get it.

I wanted to buy bus tickets in a shop and she didn't have a clue what I was saying(she thought she didn't).

I went accross the road to the kiosk, said the same stuff and I got my tickets no problem.

Real Estate / Foreign investor, properties in Poland, walk away from mortgages? [209]

Someone always pays the price when somone else defaults, usually it is the ordinary joe soaps who pay at the end. Job losses, tax hikes, interest rate hikes, austerity measures, wage cuts, less hospital/public services, smaller pensions for old people due to taxes and smaller returns. :-(

Language / Does anyone feel that they are not normal for learning Polish? No Polish girlfriend etc. [12]

Someone else mentioned something like this recently, he was afraid that if he spoke some Polish words to his Polish neighbours in Britain that they might think that he was some kind of a freak/weirdo etc. I can't find the thread now but I think that it is all about the context in which you speak the Polish language, speaking it in Poland is super ok, saying Polish swear words for fun at work with Polish friends etc. is ok in any country, speaking "good" Polish in Britain worries people sometimes but speaking badly pronounced Polish to dogs is just cringe!!!!!!!! Worse than the first episodes of the x factor I think.

I do think that learning languages is very good for anyone though despite my own mixed up ideas on the matter of Polish. I agree with Lyzko and Koala above.

Language / GCSE Polish - the best way of learning the seven cases? [12]

best way of learning these cases

Get a book like Hurra Po Polsku 1. It teaches you the cases and uses them later in other exercises, this means that you come accross what you have learnt again and again making it easier to remember. It is a well structured book. best of luck

Language / GCSE Polish - the best way of learning the seven cases? [12]

I will never be able to learn it.

Learn it whatever way suits you best. For me learning a chart of endings wouldn't work. I need to do examples and after a while I remember them.

Accusative
Fem: -ę
Masc: -y, -i (living: -a)
Neutr: -e

example:
Ja, pić, kawa
Piję kawę.

Language / How do Poles feel about foreigners learning their language? [105]

I originally thought Poles might be offended if you tell them you are trying to learn their language, and learn it well.

Oh, definitely go to Poland, it is a great place, speak Polish when you can, don't tell them you are learning just speak, it is great, Poland is the best place to speak Polish. I can't recommend it enough.
