Food / What's your favorite Polish beer? [870]

No matter who is behind that, it should be forbidden and handled like the Reinheitsgebot in Germany, wherein only water, barley and hops is allowed in beer.

HatefulBunch397:
That was in Mein Kampf, I do believe

Really!
A link would be nice...

Of course it is, actually it's one of the main concepts of the book and not only a side note.
Here you go:

Genealogy / Why Polish aren't white?? [272]

berni23:
"Many of Hitler's eugenic ideas surfaced in his book Mein Kampf."

And where did he speak explicitely of the blond/blue eyed people?
Because THAT was actually the question...

Have you even read the book???

The concept of an Aryan race(or Herrenrasse) is predominant in it and according to this the blond/blue eyed ideal is very much a part of it:

"By the 1880s a number of linguists and anthropologists argued that the "Aryans" themselves had originated somewhere in northern Europe. A specific region began to crystallize when the linguist Karl Penka (Die Herkunft der Arier. Neue Beiträge zur historischen Anthropologie der europäischen Völker, 1886) popularized the idea that the "Aryans" had emerged in Scandinavia, and could be identified by the distinctive Nordic characteristics of blond hair and blue eyes."

"This "Nordic race" theory gained traction following the publication of Charles Morris's The Aryan Race (1888), which argued that the "original Aryans" could be identified by their blond hair and other Nordic features, such as dolichocephaly (long skull)."

Nevertheless, such theorists usually accepted that considerable variety of hair and eye colour existed even within the racial categories they recognised.
Contrary to a popular myth, the Nazis themselves did not discriminate against Germans who were not blonde or blue-eyed, or had only one of these features. Adolf Hitler and most Nazi officials had brown hair and were considered to be "Aryans".

Who's disclaiming that?

The only person claiming the Nordic look of Aryans is a myth created by the evil allies are you and i have already provided you with your beloved lnks/quotes that disprove that.

Travel / Cheap places to stay in Szczecin? [12]

[Moved from]: Szczecin - looking for an affordable place to stay for the weekend

Hi
We are going to Szczecin for the weekend and are having trouble finding affordable accommodation. The last time we went, we stayed here, but unfortunately this is booked out.

ptsm.home.pl/index.php

Can somebody suggest an alternative?

Also, i heard that the market at Turzyn has closed down.
Is there anything comparable in Szczecin?

Thanks a lot in advance!
Cheers

History / Polish relation about Russians, Ukrainians? [281]

I definitely need the stuff you are smoking.

The Mongols defeated Russia and occupied Moscow.

consumed by ferocious Russian welcome

"The Mongol Empire invaded Kievan Rus' in the 13th century, destroying numerous cities including Ryazan, Kolomna, Moscow, Vladimir and Kiev.

This campaign was heralded by the Battle of the Kalka River (1223) which resulted in a Mongol victory over forces of several Rus' principalities. Nevertheless, the Mongols retreated. Batu Khan's full-scale invasion of Rus' occurred from 1237 to 1240; the campaign was ended by a Mongol succession crisis. All Russian states had to submit to Mongol rule and became part of the Golden Horde empire; some of it lasted until 1480."

Yeah, you showed them. :D

And I`m glad that now Poles have much better fertility rates then during communism and multiply in numbers instead desapear as a nation as it was under communists. And now Polish use drink much less vodka and much healthier.

This just cracked me up.

Law / Where to register a .PL domain name? [33]

there isnt really much difference between the domain extension in terms of serp (search engine result pages)

maybe not for serp but def for seo. ;)
with the same content, age and links a .pl will get u higher than a net.pl as it is top level opposed to second level.

however if u are really just catering to the polish market a net.pl might get you further than a .net(or even .com).

it really depends on your business.

News / More Poles speak English than French or Spanish! [34]

Now that would be a headline:
A survey done by EF Education First which checked the knowledge of foreign languages on 315 million Americans found that only 0.643% could communicate enough to get by.

Out of the 0.643% 0.534% were immigrants or direct decedents of immigrants.

Life / Czas honoru (Time of honoru) TV serial [38]

I never said i watched all of it, i stopped when they started shifting from a historical adventure to a family oriented drama.

Few examples of historical buffs:
1. Bank robbery was entirely incorrect, not even the bank and year were correct.
2. Executions were not on the agenda until much later.
3. I wont even go into uniforms, equipment and weapons.
Fact is, it cant hold its ground with historical shows like Band of Brothers, Rome etc..

What preconceptions?
Simple, all Poles are heroes and everybody else is evil. There is no mention of the thousands of Poles that profited from the invasion, rated out Jews or were simply indifferent.

Generally they could have made much more out of the show by incorporating more real live stories, but they opted for a Sunday evening show with love stories set in the 40ties.

Unfortunately Moody's and S&P

Well, what do you say? I am happily proven wrong.
BTW: Those stats are from here: europa.eu
I think that they are a bit more trustworthy than some rating agencies, that make a living solely by rating countries up and down.

Nor do the figures for nominal GDP per capita, nor do the unemployment figures, nor do the NUTS-2 regions.

Are you serious? So Luxembourg is the "wealthiest" country in Europe?

Life / Czas honoru (Time of honoru) TV serial [38]

Oh, I know, those Polish and Jewish family tragedies, you found so soapy. Perhaps because you can't relate.

I can relate but its time to forgive and not make the same mistakes again. Otherwise we would have a never ending cycle, that certain groups crave so much.

This is not a story of four particular AK soldiers. It is not meant to be "correct." It is not a documentary.

Yet, it was you who asked me to point out the historical inaccuracies.

/wiki/Wawer_massacre

I meant the assassinations of Germans, which didnt really take off until 1943. Until then structures had to be built and it was the time of "Maly sabotaz".

Just like there is no mention of thousands of Jews who profited from the invasion, rated out fellow Jews and Poles, but there were individual stories illustrating both events.

What stories? There is one Polish character who conspires with the Germans and only because they blackmail him.

Raise your hand if you are sure you would help your neighbor when you know if caught doing so you, your wife, and your kids will be shot.
Ask your wife first.

Fortunately i dont have a wife that tells me what i can and cant do. ;)

Law / Can't get a social security number/PESEL in Poland (I'm from UK) [56]

I was only partly joking, i used this to make several transactions in Poland, including opening a bank account.
The consultant i met later was very understanding in me being a foreigner and this stupid PESEL system.

I wouldnt use it when dealing with officials though.

Life / Polish people raised during communism... how do you feel? [5]

while the older ones were more in touch with the idea of atheism in some way and had a bigger aversion to the prospect of not having enough food choices.

??? ****** does that mean, especially the second part. ???

The only difference is that the older generation actually went out as kids(like playing football), while the younger generation has a PS or spends their afternoons on PF. :D

Law / Lokaty in Poland [5]

I have opened a life insurance at Nordea, which is effectively a lokata for 12 months with an interest of 5.1%.
The trick is, you dont pay taxes on life insurances, so if i would have opened a comparable lokata, it would give me 6.3% before taxes.

Does anybody know comparable long term investments?

Law / Can't get a social security number/PESEL in Poland (I'm from UK) [56]

I know its no help to you, but at least they acknowledged that proof of residence(for foreigners) is nonsense:

From 1 January 2013, changes to the scope of data collected in the registry Social Security of Poland - assumes signed by President novella of the Law on the population register . This law also assumes that from 2014 . Obligation of registration will be abolished .

According to the story from 2013 . Changes to the scope of data collected in the registry Social Security : no longer in the information on the address , country of residence , and data entry into the Polish and travel outside the borders of our country.

Register of Social Security will remain the primary tool for civil registration system ; records will be disposed of inhabitants and registers of residence of foreigners.

From 2014 on you wont have these problems anymore.

Meanwhile i would consult a lawyer - mine said its possible to get a PESEL at the Polish embassy, youd have to have a residence in your own country though.

Maybe there's some sort of agency that registers you at their address for a small fee?

= lawyer ;)

Law / Lokaty in Poland [5]

Its a trick banks do to avoid paying the 19% Capital Gains Tax.

You basically make a life insurance for 12 months. If you live you get the cash + 5.1%, if you die your beneficiary gets it.

Law / Lokaty in Poland [5]

Nope, i for instance opened it with a Gernan passport without residing in Poland.

You can btw use the "Zapytaj o produkt" link, they will call you back in English.

I'm also looking at investing in short term and long term with banks/financial institutions in Pl

I suggest you go for long term asap, as interest rates will continue to fall.
