Travel / Live Music / Festival in Warsaw? [26]

Given its size, Warsaw isn't a fantastic location for live music, but there a number of places with regular shows. What type of music are you looking for?

Travel / Live Music / Festival in Warsaw? [26]

As a Beantown native, you might be interested in catching Flogging Molly and Dropkick Murphy's, they're both in town next month. The Aktivist magazine has details. Hard Rock Cafe has regular live music, mostly American and mostly rock. Warsaw Tortilla Factory and Bradley's also both have live music.

On a side note, I'd steer clear of Patrick's, it has a dodgy reputation for scamming foreigners out of cash.

Law / What is "prowizja" in a loan? [4]

Hi folks,

I have a quick question I hope someone can answer.

When taking out a cash loan what exactly is the Prowizja? I understand that this a payment taken by the bank, but I don't understand how exactly it's calculated.

If the loan is 5000zl and the bank prowizja 3%, does this mean 3% of the capital (5000zl) or 3% of the capital and the interest over the life of the loan?

Also, is the prowizja included in any quoted APR?

Anyone with any experience of this? I've not heard of prowizja in the UK or if it exists it's swallowed up in the total interest payment.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Cheers,
Peter

Yes, pawian, commission would seem accurate, but I generally don't see provision or commission quoted in loan prices in the UK. I think it's probably placed in the APR.

Looking here: bankier.pl/finanse/kredyty/gotowkowe/ further down the page.

prowizja is one of the main things listed.

USA, Canada / Who is better informed, the expat or the Polonia crowd? [144]

I think the premise is somewhat misleading and both parties have a certain advantage. Many of the Polonia crowd will have had a fairly usual Polish upbringing thanks to their parents - regardless of the country they were brought up in - this gives them a unique insight into the culture and history of the country. However, they also exist in a microcosm of Polish society, one that is often dated, and one that is no longer similar to the Poland of today. This is where expats have the advantage.

There is little substitute for living in a country and expats have far better idea of what life is like in Poland today. There is caveat to this in that many expats are completely disengaged from what is happening in Poland. They eat, drink and talk with other expats. I think one of the better barometers of this is whether an expat can speak the language - to some degree or another and depending how long they have been here - it's not only essential to truly understanding what's going on around you but shows an engagement with the country.

There are, I kid you not, expats who have been here for 10 years and still cannot speak Polish.

This 'ethnic fold' stuff is absolute bunk. It's enjoyed support from such luminaries as the Ku Klux Klan, the Saudi Arabian government and Hitler.

History / Poles embraced Communism at the end of WW2 [8]

You do realise that the Communists weren't as unpopular in the post-war period as you make them out to be? They enjoyed a wave of popularity after WW2, not least because it was a clear rejection of fascism.

I'd love to see some robust data on that.

While I agree that the Communists were quite possibly more popular in post-war Poland than is currently acknowledged, I don't think the statement

enjoyed a wave of popularity after WW2

has any basis in fact.

Law / Retail chain pricing in Poland? [10]

It wasn't readily apparent who owns it? Apart from the prominent page on the website saying 'the team' and listing the owners
