News / GERMANS WANT TO GERMANIZE KOPERNIK (COPERNICUS)! OUTRAGE! [1016]

WARSAW - Poles are up in arms over what they complain is the European Commission's "Germanization" of the name of the father of modern astronomy, Nicolas Copernicus, in the title of an EU space program.

The commission has officially changed the name of the EU's GMES (Global Monitoring for Environment and Security) programme to "Kopernikus," the German spelling of Copernicus, at the initiative of Commission Vice President Guenter Verheugen, a German. The Polish spelling is "Kopernik."

Bratwurst- He was born on Polish territory at that time and what you write about his upbringing and education is just what Germans have taught you. No historian or encyclopedia will tell you that he's German so think about why that is? This is stupid! All of a sudden he's German?? Prove that he wrote his work in German? I suppose you think Auschwitz was Polish?

And he isn't "suddenly" german...just read his bio!

He has never been known as German. Get that through your head. The German arguments are BS- you know it. You believe your BS cuz you're German. Let's get the Brits to settle this. Answer why nobody else sees him as German???

News / GERMANS WANT TO GERMANIZE KOPERNIK (COPERNICUS)! OUTRAGE! [1016]

In 1491 he enlisted at Krakow Academy (Jagielonian now). I don't claim to know everything about Kopernik but even if he did have some German education (some believe his mother was German) than so what?? He was Polish through and through and spent his last days in Poland.

The stupid German bastards don't want to let things go. This, German land claims- pretty soon people are gonna think WWII was started by Poland!!!

he studied in Bologna and Padua too. Does that make him Italian

Very good point! The Poles are right about being suspicious of Germans trying to have too much control in the E.U. This is what happens.

Yup, that's why this uproar about the name of the space program, right? :):):)

You're a little b**ch you know that? You say that we should share Kopernik. So why did the krauts have to Germanize it totally? I guess you can buy anything in politics. You guys always had more people in Germany to influence Europe. The Polish politicians wanted to keep it in the Latin name Copernicus so it'd be more international. But it was Germanized. This is why Poland will never be real friends with the krauts. There's no point. At least the rest of the world agrees with us. At least the history books won't be changed.

Does anyone know if this name has been officially changed or is the debate still ongoing??

News / GERMANS WANT TO GERMANIZE KOPERNIK (COPERNICUS)! OUTRAGE! [1016]

I've come to the conclusion that Bratwurst Boy is an internet geek and social outcast who spends his time on forums like this fighting for the "good" of all krauts. I'm sure he slicks his hair back, smokes a pipe, wears black rimmed glasses and says "vas is dat?" . He still hasn't addressed the issue of why Germans have Germanized Kopernik to Kopernikus when Poles want to stay neautral with Copernicus (Latinized) . This is because he knows he belongs to a nation of cultural thieves who don't like it when their neighbour is getting the attention they deserve. It's in typical German character. But it's ok. Poles don't have to like Germans and we don't have to abide by their rules either.

USA, Canada / Getting a VISA to USA by a Polish person nowadays [339]

Poland jumps at the US's every beck & call to meet the requirements it can control, and still no budge on VWP admission.

I think there's too many Jews in the American government who hate Poles, stemming from our previous hostilities towards each other. A lot of Jews don't like Poles- it's not a secret. Like they say, "It's all politics."

Life / POLISH YOUTH compared to the youth in other Western countries? [57]

How would you compare Polish youth these days to say youth in other western EU states and even N. America?
For example, who abuses more drugs and alcohol? Who's more promiscuous?? Poland has a tradition of string family values. Is this true or a myth?

Discuss.

Life / POLISH YOUTH compared to the youth in other Western countries? [57]

I know the Canadian youth looooooove pot. They did a survey last summer and Canadians smoke more pot than people in Amsterdam, for example. The most in the western world. I was shocked but not surprised. My parents told me that back in the old days nobody really smoked weed in Poland. Also, Spain has the highest rate of cocaine use in Europe. Poland never seems to make it on these lists. Anyways I've always associated Poland with more alcohol abuse than actual drug (snort, snort) abuse (although alcohol is technically a drug).

News / WHY DOES POLAND BUY GAS FROM RUSSIA? [105]

I live in Canada and wonder why Poland get their gas imports from Russia- their biggest enemy since, oh I dunno, the beginning of time! I remember a couple of years ago the Ruski's turned off the supply for a while (which affected Germany too). What is Poland doing to diversify it's supply?

News / WHY DOES POLAND BUY GAS FROM RUSSIA? [105]

The Ruskies have all of Europe under thier control. Thats why when the invade countries like Georgia, The UK and France put thier tails between thier legs and wait for the USA to save them because they havent got any balls! Theyre so afraid Russia will close the spicket on them.

Russian will always own Europe coz the EU will never stand up against them:)

Doesn't Norway, or one of those northern countries have a ton of gas???

USA, Canada / Moving back from Canada to Poland, yes or no? [39]

Soon there won't be a Poland anymore.

Are you serious? What countries are these muslims coming from? Let me guess- Turkey? I thought Poland officially does not accept refugees and there is no immigration program ala the UK and Germany. With high unemployment how can Poland handle these parasitic muslims?

Life / I'm from Polish descent. CAN YOU GUYS EXPLAIN THE EU TO ME? [115]

I'm from Polish descent and try my best to follow Polish politics online. Once in a while I read about Poland standing up to the EU because the country feels like it is being short changed by the bigger powers (I hear Polish farmers are not too happy). I also hear EU skeptics predicting the collapse of the EU in the future because countries lose sovereignty. So what's the real deal with the EU? Is it more beneficial to be in it or not? Why the need to create a huge, borderless, blurry, mess called Europe? What's the catch?

Life / I'm from Polish descent. CAN YOU GUYS EXPLAIN THE EU TO ME? [115]

Examine European history 1800-1991. Pay particular attention to how many lives and money was lost in the process of war in Europe. Then come back and ask the question again.

I understand that generations were wiped out due to war in Europe, especially in Poland. But isn't there huge criticism and EU skepticism right now because countries like Poland do not want countries like Germany and France calling the shots and indirectly having influence over their futures? Are these not legitimate concerns of a country like Poland which has only been free for 20 years. Are people really that naive to think that Germany and France have Poland's interests in mind?

New EU economic plan to disadvantage of Poland?

UPDATE - The Europe 2020 strategy, announced by the European Commission today, raised concerns in Poland.

Jose Manuel Barroso has revealed that the 10-year EU plan for jobs and growth is meant to lead Europe away from financial crisis. In order to make the EU the world's leading and "competitive knowledge-based economy", the member states needed to work harder on coordinating economic policy, Barroso said, Wednesday.

"It is difficult to find a place for Poland in this strategy because it is written for the needs of the older member states," a high-ranking official at the Commission is quoted by Polish Radio's IAR agency as saying.

The strategy, to the dissatisfaction of the Polish government, is primarily focused on a knowledge-based, environmentally friendly economy. However, little space is devoted to EU cohesion policy - smoothing out the differences between rich and poor regions in the EU.

There is concern in Warsaw that the assumptions of the strategy will affect discussion on the shape of a new EU budget after 2013 and will be grounds for a reduction of expenditures - for example, for the construction of highways, something badly needed in Poland.

Hungary's PM Gordon Bajnai met with Prime Minister Tusk, Tuesday, to discuss the EU's new economic strategy.

Poland wants the new "EU 2020" plan to encompass the continuing needs of the EU's new member states and demands completion of internal EU market construction and infrastructure funds envisaged in the EU's budget after 2013. The issue of further enlargement of the euro zone is also to be on the agenda.

The strategy which will be presented at the EU summit this month. The new plan will replace the Lisbon Strategy, which some say suffered spectacular failure. In 2000, the European Union assumed that within a decade it would become the most competitive economy in the world, a goal so far not achieved. (pg)

"Things went wrong wen the original 6 started admitting other, usually poor countries like Greece, Portugal, Ireland, the entire former East Bloc and so on. It should've stayed the core of 6 states, all rich and not burdened by these poor suckers who only drag things down. It's my personal opinion that the EU should go back to the original six and leave the golddiggers to fix their own mess. These poor bastards get billions each year from Brussels, hence only cost us, the rich countries, money and yet they are always complaining the hardest. Ungrateful buggers."

- Very stupid quote and extremely ignorant. What country are you from? Don't forget that the German as'sholes received billions of dollars from the United States after WWII so they could get back on their feet. What did Poland get? Europe owes Poland.

Travel / Poland from a Persian Tourist's Perspective [269]

Interesting perspective. Well just so you know I am a young Polish guy living in Toronto. Hate it here. Too many foreigners. I would hate it if Warsaw turned into this. I don't think it will. France and England had most of the colonies back in the day and many countries have adopted their languages. Therefore most of the people from those former colonies will be more attracted to the lands of their former masters because they know their languages :)

Polish is a hard language and as well Poland does not owe anything to p'iss poor countries that have interests in Poland. By the way how would Polish people be treated in Persia or anywhere in that part of the world? Anyways, the more visible minorities in Poland the more racism you'll see. It's human nature.

I once knew a Paki who studied in Germany for a couple of years. I told him I was Polish and he did not know where Poland was on the map. How's that for ignorance? Stupid Paki I say :)

History / Why are Jews pestering Poland for "proper" WW2 monetary restitution/reparations? [750]

Forgive my ignorance on this topic but it is it true that the Polish Jewish diaspora around the globe is still pestering Poland for "proper" monetary restitution/reparations (ex. $65 billion) for atrocities committed against them in WWII? Weren't Jews compensated greatly after the war? What are the Jews p'issed about?
