News / Demonstrations in Poland in defence of democracy. [2554]

the event should have been politically neutral.

The best way to do that would be to not hold it during the campaign....

President Duda's near accident caused by a puncture yesterday KOD-ites

Do you have any real evidence that the people writing tasteless comments are affiliated with KOD? Or are you, as is the usual case, just blowing a lot of hot air?

The comments are regrettable but there are always idiots ready to say nasty things, big deal. The president himself by his own actions has destroyed his political capital (by being a JK flunky first, president second) so he doesn't get much sympathy when something unpleasant happens...

I'm glad he wasn't hurt but I find all the pearl clutching to be a little.... disingenuous.

This was an exhibition about general Anders, who after the war held the high office of General inspector of the free polish armed forces.

IINM the protests were at the event being turned into a pseudo campaign appearance.

I'd like to know the reason for the particular timing of the exhibition.

Travel / Misery /PRL era tourism in Warsaw [25]

While here, does anyone miss Jarmark Europa?

It used to be one of my favorite places in Warsaw (if not absolute favorite) and I always made a point to visit when I was there. I never bought that much stuff (and made sure my wallet was as inaccessible as possible) but I loved wandering around the different sections, the Polish area, the ex-Soviet area and especially the large sectors with Vietnamese merchants.

Is there anything remotely like that now?

Language / Polish vs Russian: Which language sounds cooler? [21]

In many ways Russian sounds cock-eyed and ridiculous to native speakers of Polish.

And vice versa of course. Actually more often than not any particular slavic language, especially in its more formal vocabulary, sounds ridiculous to speakers of other slavic languages.

News / Demonstrations in Poland in defence of democracy. [2554]

Once Soviet troops had left Poland, the government was under no obligation to honour the RT agreements.

That's called retro-active legislation and it would have retarded Poland's growth for several years. You really have no idea how much the economy had been hollowed out, do you? Governments that reneg on agreements (no matter how onerous) are on no one's list of investment opportunities.

The economic misery in the early 90s was pretty profound and would have been worse if Poland gained the reputation of a bad faith actor that went back on its word.

Plus... there's the expert problem. The party was full of hacks, and some vicious animals and some apolitical very competent people who had joined for career purposes. Excluding them from the post communist system would be really, really dumb.

there probably would not have been a SLD government and presidency.

Had the post RT governed reneged on its agreements Poland would have probably gone the path of Belarus or early 90s Slovakia (the latter turned back from the precipice but the former never has).

Kwaśniewski was a decent president (for all his .... wpadki) probably the best post 1989 president (in terms of being a working politician).

Yes the whole transfer from the PRL to the RP was messy and and problematic and lots of things would have been nicer but trying to fix that now is just incredibly wrongheaded the problems facing Poland now have nothing to do with who did or didn't work with the SB in the 1970s.

News / Demonstrations in Poland in defence of democracy. [2554]

The horrible tragedy was that communism did not collapse and political criminals were not held to account.

Again. There were two options

Soft landing - What happened. Downsides are that some guilty are unpunished and some of the virtuous will not be rewarded. Upside is there's no bloodshed.

Hard landing - Violent uprising with militias vs militias. Upside is that more of the guilty will be punished and the downside is that a lot of innocent people get killed, the country hemmorages people (especially young educated) and the country plunges into depression and tries to claw itself out.

Just how could your unicorn fairy fantasy of non-violent decommunization with the cooperation of the communists have happened?

You're obsessed with mapping out a perfect transition that should have happened rather than trying to make the best of the transition that did.

It's immature and infantile like much of the PiS electorate who are fooled by promises of goodies from the Big Daddy government....

But not for 25 years!

So in other words, the collapse of communism was a horrible tragedy and yet another case of Poland being victimized by traitors.... what a horrible country this Poland must be. No national heroes, just endless betrayal and defeat....

How can such a place ever grow a national brand?

News / 2016, the year of change in Poland? [70]

Too bad PO's 500 also for the first child wasn't accepted, right?

Very fortunate that it didn't pass, it would be a terrible terrible idea. Cash payments are not a good way to grow the population (especially since that system could collapse at any time).

What would work much better would be tax breaks and guaranteed daycare (neither of which is of much interest to the current government since their spending policies mean ramping down on tax increases and improved access to daycare gives people more options which the government doesn't want them to have).

News / 2016, the year of change in Poland? [70]

from what i recall this is the help provided by the government to the poor families that cannot make ends meet before the 1st.

From what I remember PiS candidates thoroughly rejected any type of means testing for the 500 zl during the campaign. It was to be an entitlement and not a welfare program (despite what they might be saying now).

News / US Military: The Army of Poland is crap. [124]

you would know why they are still sending troops to Afghanistan

Because they have yet to achieve any real successes in over 10 years. Dress it up however you want but that is still failure.

before you get an other anti-american

I'm American, bucko. I don't like seeing my country digging a dry well and wasting huge amounts of resources and achieving nothing in rerturn.

ulling the balance of power more in to your favour... And at this..the U.S is pretty good !

Ha! Where? Iraq? Afghanistan? Those are both abysmal failures where huge amounts of money and resources and young soldiers' lives have been expended for a situation that is if anything worse than before? If this in our favor I'd hate to see what your idea of failure is...

News / Polish magazine causes outrage with cover showing white woman being sexually attacked by 'migrants' [57]

after certain people objected to the "Nazi anti Muslim hate propaganda" the magazine thought it would be a good idea to publish

Isn't that just the SJW* way - don't engage with uncomfortable ideas - try to shut down public dialogue. Not a good idea. Shutting down dialogue does not stop ideas, it just drives them underground where they grow more dangerous.

*Social Justice Warrior - self-righteous pricks who want to boss around other people in the name of .... some damm thing or other.

News / "We will not hesitate to shoot Kaczyński dead" - KOD Facebook page [164]

The loss of Poland's industrial base

Why are you such a communist obsessed with industrialization? Even the Chinese are starting to ease out of production. Making stuff is not the wave of the future (unless it's making the robots that will be making stuff.... before the robots start making the robots that will be making other stuff.

the country's vassalisation

I know you're addicted to Polish victimology but just who or what is Poland a vassal?

loss of national self-esteem and dignity

That's sad for you, but why do you assume that everyone else shares your lack of self esteem?

the KOR/PO/SLD/KOD clique serving foreign interests which has helped reduce Poland to neo-coloniał status.

More communist rhetoric. Who is the colonial power? And how are they exploiting Poland and Polish people?

Life / Polish culture versus rotten West [279]

And this is what I hate about the EU and western European leaders. There's no slightest effort made to address the concerns (quite legitimate) of tens of millions of voters - just mandarin pronouncements of what is acceptable and not acceptable.

There are reasons that far right parties are gaining in support across Europe and the out of touch technocrats running the EU think that if they ignore them then everyone else will as well.

I'm not actually against the EU in principle but if it falls the blame will fall almost entirely on cack-handed "leaders" like Merkel and Hollande....

And while the reactive fossils are wondering about what to do about the migrant crisis 11,000 just crossed over into Greece in the last three days.

Can anyone imagine what will be going on in May? Merkel and Hollande and a host of other members of the EU elite apparently can't.....

Life / How can Polish immigrants complain about other immigrants? [65]

I dont think really one can argue against people from abroad investing money in Poland while at the same time supporting Poles moving abroad

You clearly haven't been around here for very long. A certain subset of posters can and will vociferously argue just for that.

News / Polish magazine causes outrage with cover showing white woman being sexually attacked by 'migrants' [57]

USA would love to assist in destroying the welfare system in Europe

This has nothing to do with the US (though the same processes are happening there). This is entirely on the initiative of the European elite. Look into authors like Phillip Bobbit and Zygmunt Baumann.

Your 2nd paragraph is very interesting. Something I will look into.

Look into "nudge" theory. The idea is that governments don't try to convince people of their policies but rather create conditions that lead people "on their own" to do what the government wants.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nudge_theory

And as to automation, this is the scariest video ever...

mods: please do not move this comment to random, it's entirely germaine to the larger topic (what's up with the migrants and how should Poland react)

News / Polish magazine causes outrage with cover showing white woman being sexually attacked by 'migrants' [57]

not sure what the end game is

A lot of people who've paid a lot of attention to this issue (unlike those who rely on the mainstream media alone) think the likely answer is: To roll back the welfare state*. The idea is: overburden it till it collapses in a way that most people will be afraid to criticize (and put them in jail if they do criticize).

I'm also halfway convinced that the violence against native women that the migrants are bringing with them is also welcomed by the EU elite. Here the probable idea is to whittle down the labor force. Automation is set to eliminate millions and millions of jobs in the next decade or two and global capital does not need much of a workforce. By making public spaces less safe for women they're encouraging them to stay home and not pursue careers (anecdotal evidence indicates that women in migrant-rich areas are already curtailing their public activities).

*this is tied up with ideas like 'the end of the nation state' a policy that western governments are pursuing while not talking about it.

News / Poland's Prime Minister Szydło keeps American bulldogs on short leash [36]

Well the American way in foreign policy is to extract concessions first (with never quite guaranteed supposed benefits to come) and then never deliver those. I'm American but I have to admit my country is a terrible, terrible and completely unreliable ally.

Poland has been America's biтch (or late night booty call) in Europe for way too long. If it wants to put the relationship on ice then more power to her but that means no more promises of goodies (not that they would materialize unless the US wants to build a base in Poland which I don't imagine they do).

News / Polish magazine causes outrage with cover showing white woman being sexually attacked by 'migrants' [57]

Twitter users have compared the images with fascist propaganda in Nazi Germany and Mussolini's Italy, which used images of women being attacked by Jewish and North African men.

Well how could Cologne be described if not north African men targetting and sexually assaulting European women?

How can Rotherham be described except as Muslim men targetting and sexually exploiting non-muslim young women?

The cover is effective because a large section of the population is paralyzed by cognitive dissonance and/or fear of being labelled racist.

Poles, by and large, can look at Hungary's handling of the migrants and Germany's and compare where was the better New Year's Eve? Budapest or Cologne?

European progressives are choosing to ignore important facts.

However, following your sinking whoever has more to offer to ze other always winz, always? Are you sure?

Not what I'm saying at all. Which wants more from the other side? Poland or the US? The side that wants more is at a negotiating disadvantage and playing tough is not a wise strategy when you don't have much the other side wants...

News / How would Poland change for the better (or worse) under a PiS government? [257]

They've got well-paid legal advisers showing hot to outfox Poland and transfer maximum profits abroad.

It's not illegal to minimize one's tax bill (while following the law). Larger players know how to do it better, if anything it's an incentive for simplifying the tax code.

There's no such thing as helping domestic bueinsesses to grow while penalizing foreign operators in the modern world. That's as dead as PRL style economics.

News / Polish magazine causes outrage with cover showing white woman being sexually attacked by 'migrants' [57]

The problem is that those in favor of accepting millions of unvetted migrants from backward societies (hindered by primitive ideas about sexual segregation) are unwilling to publicly discuss the very real problems these unvetted migrants are causing - including Cologne (and many, many, many other examples of similar behavior that are easy to find for those following the migrant story).

This leaves the fringes to take up the slack.

Not discussing real problems in public does not make them go away - it drives them underground.

I don't blame this rag for sensationalizing the topic when none of the migrant supporters are willing to discuss the problems in public.
