News / Tesco out of Poland? Żabka and Biedronka opportunity. [73]

The vast majority of the shops are owned by Poles

Foreign lackey traitors (for Polonius) who make their employees where pampers and ship vast profits to England and Germany so that..... I got nothin'. The economic crazy of the PiS-ites is something I can't keep up with.

Law / Do foreign students graduated from Polish university need work permit before finding job? [24]

It's a case of universities turning from institutions of higher education preparing people for professional work in the country of the university to an international profit making schemes. It's purely disgusting.

Classes in English where this is not the language of the country are a big symptom of that. It's not about education it's about turning Asian student cash cows into hamburgers.

News / The only three normal cities with any respect for humanity in Poland [99]

I was referring to the refusal to contribute to anything at all actually

Very far form your original claims.

we are talking about Syrians from certain locations (Homs/Aleppo etc) primarily here.

Vetted by who? What precisely is being asked for of whom and how is it known that the people in question would actually stay in Poland? The inital attempts at accepting Syrian refugees was a resounding failure (almost all left for Germany within days of arriving at the accomodations provided at no small expense and didn't even say 'shukran'). Offering refuge to people is worthless, pointless and frankly stupid if the people in question don't want it.

How is it known which side the refugees are from? Accepting refugees from different sides of the conflict just means importing the conflict as well (witness the regular brawls and riots at 'refugee' centers in Germany).

And throwing money at organizations with proven track records of failing to deal with anything in a positive manner doesn't make much sense either.

The sad fact is that Poland has not been asked to do anything reasonable or sensible. When realistic doable proposals are on the table and rejected is the time to critcize that hasn't happened yet.

refugees can't be sent back to a war zone, or anywhere in fact, once they have landed on continental soil - pity though it be in some cases , those are the facts of the matter.

Western Turkey is not a war zone, neither is Greece, Bulgaria, Serbia, Hungary or any of the other countries they trek through to get to Germany or Scandinavia.

Since when is being a refugee a form of diplomatic immunity?

while the government maintains it's non-humanitarian stance

The government (as much as I loathe them) has an entirely defensible position: The refugees don't want to come here, they won't stay (unless they're put in camps and/or communist style border controls return) so why go through the kabuki theater of "accepting" them? To help Merkel's image? Why on earth should Poland help such an incompetent leader (who has nothing much to offer in return)?

That's pretty expensive virtue signalling for no real return (you at least get to posture at length here).

And what has Poland done to help?

You haven't made the case that Poland should help them (or that a majority of those who arrived in 2015 are legitimate refugees as opposed to opportunists who are fleeing dysfunctional societies).

I'm all in favor of helping real refugees but that requires some vetting that no one wants to do (and helping them closer to Syria is more cost-effective than creating human smuggler networks to bring them into a cultural setting where they are doomed to be wards of the state - angry wards of the state if the Western European experience is anything to go by).

Language / Why does Polish form of Nicholas (Mikołaj) begin with an M? [12]

A similar but reversed question comes up with 'bear' the old Slavic name translates as honey-eater (or maybe honey-knower) and in Russian, Czech, etc it begins with an m (as in honey) with forms similar to medved (possible palatization at different places) Ukrainian reverses the order with vedmid

but Polish is the odd language out with niedźwiedź (possible pre assimilation to the palatized-aveolars).

News / The only three normal cities with any respect for humanity in Poland [99]

the only cases of dissension against the disgusting racist comments towards refugees by the PIS

What makes you think the migrants (most aren't true refugees) want to come to Poland or would stay here? They typically cross through a number of other completely safe countries with similar standards of living in their quest for northern european welfare payments.

Nothing else in your post matters until you can answer that question. Also witness recent ungratefulness of refugees sent to Czechia who immediately spit in their hosts' face running off to Germany.

Why make empty futile gestures for people who won't appreciate them?

If I thought that the migrants would stay in Poland and do their best to assimilate and contribute economically then I'd be in favor of accepting them. But that's not what the data shows so far.

News / Warsaw mayor defiles Ghetto observance with anti-Semitic charges [19]

Poland's current pro-Polish administration

PiS is pro-PiS and nothing more. If you genuinely think they care about the country (and are not simply on their payroll) then you are in for a world of heartbreak once you realize what they're all about (cronyism and power and vengeance)

Millions of Poles deluded by a shrewd and crafty elite into thinking they're doing their bit for propserity, when they are only being used as political cannon fodder to serve the authoritarian cronyism of the Kaczynskis, Szydłos and Dudas of this world. Don't they ever tire of repeating their bvllsh1t mantras?

They've had 26 years and what major Polish-owned corporations have emerged?

It's not the job of the government to create businesses. It's the job of the government to not unduly impede business. if you didn't hate prosperity and business you might realize that....

The PO was a total fizzle in that regard, in fact they never even broached the question

Quite properly. You seem to hate PO because they didn't act like a bunch of communists (as do PiS)

But when will we have a Dellski, IBMowicz or Amazoński

Well thanks to PiS the time frame has been pushed back a few decades. Again, these can't be created by government fiat (you really are stuck mentally in the PRL with government mandated norms and quotas). You create a business friendly environment (hard for business haters in PiS to do) and wait.

What very few people seem to realise is that profit is at most 10%, more like 7% of the income of a company.

Very few companies have a profit margin of 10%. It's not a big deal if the profits leave Poland since that's a miniscule per cent of the money spent and generated in Poland.

But marxists and other economic illiterates don't want to understand that.

Food / How to find Halal Food in Poznan (Muslim food in Poland) [55]

the rules are stricter.

Yeah, religious dietary restrictions are 98% about creating and enforcing segregation (it's essentially impossible to justify them on purely moral or ethical grounds) so sad that so many take them seriously....

If they wanted Poland to flourish then why destroy a well-known Polish international brand?

It's all about business and returns on investments

So your against business and returns on investments? PRL bis!

hint: PiS does not want Poland to flourish because it depends on a perpetually aggrieved victim class to keep it in power.

Nationalism is bullsh!t, its followers are pondscum with the brain power of walnuts

That's just stupid. Too much nationalism is bad but a society with no nationalism (ie group cohesion and loyalty) will die sooner rather than later (and good riddance).

Life / Whats that thing when Polish people take a shot of vodka by locking arms and after saying first names? [20]

Swear like a trooper is the phrase you're looking for there.

Swearing like a sailor (or truck driver) are perfectly cromulent American expressions.

I think you'll find that the genealogical term 'a family of great antiquity' would fit the bill there.

In the American south "Old money" could cover it (it actually refers to upper class ancestory rather than mere money, which is so vulgar - a lot of old money is broke flatter than pıss on a pancake).

Life / Whats that thing when Polish people take a shot of vodka by locking arms and after saying first names? [20]

there are other factors difficult for an outsider to navigate

Yes. One thing to remember is that the ty - Pani/Pan distinction is partly based on positive close feelings and partly based on social distance. You can have very positive feelings about someone but social distance factors might require Pani/Pan. You can have neutral or negative feelings and still use ty for social reasons (students invariably use ty with each other regardless of how well they get along).

In the workplace co-workers often don't use the Pan and Pani forms nowadays if they're at the same level as each other, but they may still use Pan/Pani for people senior to them

And the seniors will surely use Pani/Pan with them as well (unless maybe there's an individualized mentor/mentee relationship)

different nationalities work together, Pan and Pani aren't generally used.

Because just by being Polish in a multi-ethnic environment decreases their social distance.

Life / Whats that thing when Polish people take a shot of vodka by locking arms and after saying first names? [20]

It's two separate things;

The linking arms is called bruderszaft (from the German Bruderschaft, meaning 'brotherhood').

The other is part of the informal ceremony of shifting from formal address (Pani, Pan) to informal address (ty). Each person gives the version of their name that they'd like the other to use (many people have preferred diminutive forms) and they have a drink usually after clinking glasses.

They can be linked or the second can be done without the first (the usual way I've seen it done). Also the linking arms thing can be done on its own occasionally as a symbol of strong friendship between two guys (kind of Polish bro behavior).

I've never seen the cheeck kissing with either of the two. that's more seeing someone you really like after a longer than usual period of not seeing them. IME the Polish cheek kissing standard is three times.

News / Turkish invasion on Polish TV - Poland's opinion on Turkey [30]

Turkey most assuredly IS a Muslim country, only it's Sunni and not Shiite like Iran, Iraq etc

Most descriptions claim that the western part (especially tourist centers) are much more secularly oriented (I remember seeing mosques on friday that were all but empty) and western leaning (and suffering from the same low birth rates as Europe). The Kurds in the east are a lot more religious and less educated (and fertile the future belongs to the Kurds in Turkey which does not bode well for the country as a whole).

also, for what it's worth mosque attendance in Iran is very low (this info is widely available from all sorts of sources) and the iranians I've known are not overly religious at all they call themselves believers but don't make a big thing about it

That's exactly what the PZPR used to claim about the opposition movements back then, too.

Find a winning formula? Stick with it!

USA, Canada / How difficult is it to get a visa in Poland for an US citizen? [11]

What would be the questions for a visa in Poland?

I really doubt that US citizens will have to have visas for short term visits. This is bargaining rhetoric stemming from disagreements about a trade deal. The EU has absolutely no economic or security interests in making it difficult for Americans to make short term visits to Europe.

Don't worry about this until some kind of law is in place.

News / German government tells journalists how to badmouth Poland [42]

What are you even talking about? 7million ethnic germans?

That's about 7 million ethnic German males between the ages of 20-34 (from a couple years ago)

The migrants that arrived in 2015 where overwhelmingly men in this same age group (that is about 900,000 of them were)

Since the chance of them leaving Germany is now probably zero you have to consider them permanent residents which means that the 20-34 age demographic now has a large oversupply of young men. Lets say 8 million (aged 20-34) and 9 million men. That kind of gender imbalance never ends well.

News / German government tells journalists how to badmouth Poland [42]

it's like a broken record repeating the same few words

Because no one is paying attention. It's like the joke about hitting a donkey in the head with a baseball bat, you have to get their attention.

The comparison is not 1 million against 78 million but 1 million against 7 million (migrants vs ethnic Germans of the same age). In six or so years of current migration rates that means the population of muslim migrants vs ethnic Germans of the same age will be about half.

Those are the relevant numbers and not 1 and 78.

This might not be a problem but everywhere that it's been tried, large scale muslim migration to Europe has been an economic and social and educational disaster. I can't find statistics for a single West European country where a majority of muslims aren't on some kind of welfare. What magic fairy dust do the new arrivals have to make the outcome any different?

Love / Is it wrong for Polish girls to kiss boys before marriage ? [31]

There is a Catholic based assumption in Poland that if you don't talk about it (sex) then no one EVER does it. Sex is such a TABOO subject

IME pre-marital sex is the norm and has always been the norm in Poland. How else do you explain all the VPBs (visually pregnant brides)?
