glib, slick, smooth and slippery.

Nice synonyms. Thanks, reminds me of my uni days when I had to know as many as possible to pass the Practical English exam. Golden times - I was young, idealistic, had my first woman, etc etc.

Thank you very much, indeed, Polonius.

Travel / Poland in photo riddles [3134]

Pawian, it is a long weekend here. I have put the brain in neutral for the next day and a half. So it is a pen/enclosure for an animal of some sort.

Shyt, man, you were so close! It isn`t a turtle but a tortoise!!! My snapper turtle lives in an aquarium while my steppe tortoise lives on the ground and sometimes in it.

Are you going to add some sort of water feature to this pen?

Yes, I am thinking about it though Max doesn`t like entering water on his own, I have to bathe him in the tub.

Life / Polish vs British vs American - Clash of cultures [390]

It might be really disturbing for a Pole to go to London or New Your and get lost in the underground/subway system. And if you get annoyed and show it, the police will tease you with their paralyzers. To death.

In Warsaw you can`t get lost. Life is so much easier here.

żołnierze z Westerplatte.

Yes! (but not only as there are more battle places engraved on the monument in Gdańsk).

Try real one next time, not from the can.

No, thanks. That Guinness in the can was so poor that drinking draft one won`t help much. Sorry, it is pisss, not beer.

Are you training turtles in your pen?

If you mean pen as enclosure, then I must say you are quite close.

News / Poland Parliamentary elections 2015 [1060]

Let's hope Romney and PiS win.

Shyt, you left me clueless now. I don`t like Obama, but the way you put Romney and PiS together means I won`t support him, either.

One recent poll showed an only one point difference between the Platformer crooks and the noble Law and Justrice camp.

It an old poll. There are newer ones.

There is always hope the Polish people will wisen up. They should take their cue from our American Polonia, 70% of whom voted for PiS.

God forbid! Poland suffered too much in the past to add new suffering!! Invasions, wars, occupations, partitions. Why are you so cruel towards Poland and Poles?

Poles in Poland seem blinded by the glip and slippery rhetoric of tricky Don.

And disgusted by revolting rhetoric of Duck. :):):)

There's talk that Zyta Gilowska will be PiS's secret weapon as PM if a constructive vote of no confidence succeeds.

Secret weapon? Wunderwaffe!! :):):):)
Bulshyt. This idea was already discussed in March 2012.

Besides, she was in PiS government long ago and didn`t do anything special then.

Notice how he never looks anyone in the eye and shifts his glance away as he spouts his sugar-coated lies.

Yes :):):)

I listened attentively words of opposition leader . In my opinion , ran into the rear package them in the context of the crisis. For four years wrestling with the biggest crisis since the war , and no recipe for it can not deviate from this fact . I'd like to tell what you can do in Poland , covering the eyes and ears of what floods in Poland and Europe - said the prime minister .

Thousands of people have vowed to vote PO and Donald Tusk in next elections after seeing him trying to rescue a schoolboy who fainted. Tusk was opening a new school in his ethnic Kashuby region in the village of Sulęczyno where he used to play football matches as a child. .

Premier of Poland saving life

I will not be anyone in Poland, proposed radical changes . We are here ( in the Kashubian region - ed.) Learned over the centuries the importance of hard work , restraint , moderation and common sense . But we also see in this school that modernity presents us with requirements, which require sometimes such an internal breakthrough, which will certainly be the computerization of the educational process. I'm glad to be here in Sulęczyn children will be well prepared for this - said the head of government.

Inauguration of the school year with the participation of the Prime Minister and his wife Malgorzata Tusk was combined with the entry into service of a new primary school in Sulęczyn them . Anthony Abraham.

News / Kaczyński presents alternative to PO thievery [26]

The current Prime Minister called Kaczyński`s speech playing opposition instead of serious proposals. He announced that by Wednesday experts will have calculated how much money Kaczyński will need to fulfill his social promises, but suggested it will be tens of billions zlotys. It means increasing the public debt even more than it is now.

Shortly speaking, nothing special. Waste of time. We call it bicie piany - beating the foam.

Food / Is water in Warsaw artificially flouridated? [6]

Sorry, but,I really did think it was only that lunatic in Dr Strangelove who worried about the Fluride.....

Funny.

The communist conspiracy argument declined in influence by the mid-1960s, becoming associated in the public mind with irrational fear and paranoia. It was portrayed in Stanley Kubrick's 1964 film Dr. Strangelove, in which the character General Jack D. Ripper initiates a nuclear war in the hope of thwarting a communist plot to "sap and impurify" the "precious bodily fluids" of the American people with fluoridated water.

Travel / Poland in photo riddles [3134]

Hmm.. what do you mean? :):):)

A pen (Latin penna, feather) is a device used to apply ink to a surface, usually paper, for writing or drawing. Historically, reed pens, quill pens, and dip pens were used, with a nib dipped in the ink. Ruling pens allow precise adjustment of line width, and still find a few specialized uses, but technical pens such as the Rapidograph are more commonly used. Modern types also include ballpoint, rollerball, fountain, and felt or ceramic tip pens.

pen 2 (pn)
n.
1.
a. A fenced enclosure for animals.
b. The animals kept in such an enclosure.
c. Any of various enclosures, such as a bullpen or playpen, used for a variety of purposes.
2. A repair dock for submarines.
tr.v. penned or pent (pnt), pen·ning, pens
To confine in or as if in a pen. See Synonyms at enclose.

A little digression from my mobile/cell phone:

My wife told me to go to the basement to look for guarantee papers of a blender which got damaged. I had to dig really hard to find the box (we usually keep old boxes). In the corner of the basement I saw some planks. I thought it would be nice to use them.

So, I did and I enlarged the summer house on my room`s balcony. Who for?
PS. The beer can is to show the size of the house.

I got the inside story about this from a forester, and what's interesting to note is that much of their operation is already privatised.

I haven`t seen any boards Private! No Entry! next to Polish forests yet....

Anyway, for me, I'm not loyal to one party - I'll vote for the party that represents my interests best in that given election. Next election will likely (if she stands) be a vote for Sidonia Jędrzejewska however.

Sidonia was born in Krakow. :):):)

BTW, a very unusual first name!

Agent Tomek predicts: PiS will take over in autumn 2012.

Kaczmarek : Law and Justice in the autumn will take power in Poland

- Already in the autumn PiS will take power in Poland. I am an optimist - said in an interview with Onet PiS deputy Tomasz Kaczmarek , a former agent of the CBA known as " Tom" . - I am convinced that Donald Tusk will soon disappear from politics - he adds.

he sued Ziemkiewicz for saying that "Michnik, instead of holding debates with his opponents, is terrorizing them with filing charges in court" :)))

Pity because it is an excellent chance for Ziemkiewicz to exist in the public life. Compared to Michnik, who spent 7 years in communist prisons for his opposition activity since mid 1960s, Ziemkieiwcz is nobody. In 1980s he tried to be a s-fi writer but very poor (that was the time I read everything from s-fi). Complete garbage.

Many Poles do not necessarily agree with you.

Yes. 1/3 of voting population who support PiS.

Michnik is such a propoent of media pluralism that his newspaper's weekly TV magazioe ignores the existence of TV Trwam, but lists a plethora or 2nd, 3rd and 4th-rate stations hardly anybody watches. Moldovan-style impartiality I reckon!

It is useless on me as I don`t watch TV.

BTW, I also don`t read GW as I don`t have time. But in Internetless times, I used to buy it.

Travel / Traveling around Poland - our photo stories with very personal commentary [225]

I know you won't forget about the Gdańsk photos though:)

Yes!

Let`s start the friggin 2012 summer holiday series!!!! :):):):)

Actually, we went to the seaside, and Gdańsk was only a part of the trip.

We usually go to rural resorts between Hel Peninsula and £eba, the furthest to the north: Dębki, Karwia, Karwieńskie Błota, Białogóra, Jastrzębia Góra, £eba, Lubiatowo. They are at the open sea, far from harbours and estuaries. Wide, golden sandy beaches and clean water.

s

This year we went to Dębki. The distance from Krakow to Dębki is about 700 km. It took us 10.5 hours, as usual.

On the way to the seaside we saw:

Oriental houses near £ódź:
Nice towers of old castles
Ugly towers of modern churches
and plants
Monuments to miltary units
Good roads
but some in reconstruction
and unfortunately, most are only express ways, not highways, which makes your trip slow
unless you know how to overtake fast enough. :):):):):)
and then the road is all yours:
Do you know that many Polish plates are in English?:

pawian: Hey, how do you call this hobby of having photos of yourself taken in incredibly high places?

Thanks. Once I saw this picture as decoration at a pizza bar and got immediately fascinated. I couldn`t believe such things were/are possible:

Lunch atop a Skyscraper" B
A work by Sergio Furnari on 6th Avenue, NY NY in 2007.
This work was based on the photograph "Lunch atop a Skyscraper" taken by Charles C Ebbets on 29th September 1936. The subject was a group of of construction workers taking lunch while sitting on an iron girder on the 69th floor of the, under construction, RCA Building.

PS1. I suffer from mild acrophobia. Put me on a high platform and I will do everything for you to take me down. :):):):):)

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Acrophobia
Acrophobia (from the Greek: ἄ, ákron , meaning "peak, summit, edge" and , phóbos, "fear") is an extreme or irrational fear of heights. It belongs to a category of specific phobias, called space and motion discomfort that share both similar etiology and options for treatment.

PS2. However, when needed, I am able to overcome it.

being a teacher that can only afford Polish holidays.....

i'd probably hand out charity to you as well, at least you may be able to travel outside of Poland then. hi hi hi

Oh my God, are you really so cheap or only pretending?????

With the money spent on our month-plus holidays in various places in Poland we could go to a warm country in the south of Europe for 10 days (Greece, Croatia) or even 3 weeks (Bulgaria, Romania). But what for? Poland has everything what I/we need. The sea, mountains, forests, lakes, historical cities, picturesque landscape. Yes, it is true that the Polish sea is chilly in summer, but we don`t mind. :):):):):)

Oh my God, are you really so cheap or only pretending?????

Of course, by cheap I mean:

3. (Informal) despicable, mean, low, base, vulgar, sordid, contemptible, scurvy, scungy (Austral. & N.Z.) That was a cheap trick to play on anyone.

thefreedictionary/cheap

The Polish seaside at last!

If you go to one of tourist resorts between £eba and Hel Peninsula, you will come across wonderful wide sandy beaches. Not even golden, but white. Empty, after you walk 500 meters from the main gate . The sea offers crystal clear water.

The only problem is the weather and the temperature of water- unpredictable despite the summer season. But we have never minded it - big deal!

What can you do at the seaside when the weather is dull?

Life / Poland needs more immigrants and their children - which nationalities are the best? [518]

I have seen how small cities/towns in the UK are booming as a result of the foreign students population.

Oxford?

Poland needs to open up, be open, and welcome foreigners and their children, just as poles are welcomed abroad.

Quite right.

It's time to welcome the brightest and resourceful from Asia, Africa, Europe, America and Australia.

There is a problem, though. How to select the brightest? IQ tests?

Giys, suppose that your favourite party does sth really stupid. What would that be for you to turn it down and vote sb else or even give up voting?

For me , in case of PO, there is one thing that would pisss me off - namely, the privatisation of state forests.

So, PO guys, remember, the day you do such a foolish act will the last day I vote you and all my family, too.

The State Forests National Forest Holding is an organization protecting, utilizing, and shaping Poland's forests for over eighty years. It manages publicly owned forests on behalf of the Polish State Treasury. Their area exceeds 7.5 million hectares. A staff of experienced, professional foresters guarantee that next generations of Poles will be able to make use of all the benefits which forests provide to a not lesser degree than they do today.

lasy.gov.pl/dokumenty/in_english

PS. 7.5 million hectares make about 24% of Poland`s total area.
