News / Poland's Lost Generation [172]

wages are not stagnant - on average they are up by 4% this year and 6-7% in bigger towns.

4 per cent is not much more than the official inflation figures - and those official figures don't tell the whole truth believe me - my brother's appartment rent went 20 per cent higher in the last year - and it is over half of his monthly expenses (save for the ciggarettes - you should know that the cigarettes also became more than 10 per cent more expensive in the last year) - should I mention food prices? like that sugar speculation thing

Love / Your Thoughts about 20 Year Age Difference Between Men & Women in Poland? [74]

HE WANTS US TO MOVE FORWARD AND IM UNSURE I NEED HELP I FINALLY HAVE ALL THAT IVE DREAMED OF IN A MAN BUT I FIND MYSELF PUSHING AWAY.

it is a fear of being ridiculed by other people I presume - it is definitely not one easy thing to overcome - like fighting oneself

btw I wouldn't pressurize a woman I love into anything - I guess if he shows patience and perseverance it's gonna be much easier for you in time

Law / Is PLN affected by the rise of silver prices? [4]

I really doubt Poland has so much silver reserves - even if so the reserves are not readily mined - they are only economically mined in connexion with copper ores (the silver is part of the cooper deposit) - the best mininig areas are already being mined and further exploitation involves mining ever deeper - there was already a point in the 90's that the copper (with the added value of silver) mining in Poland was on a brink of being economical (and silver extraction may have helped it to stay afloat)

I don't see a reason we should celebrate German past of these territorries - stop

they have a German past - so what - I don't mind but also am not bothered - unless some stupid prick wants the land back

I think that calling the western lands "odzyskane" (recovered) and the eastern lands "utracone" (lost) is too pretentious,

I never heard (nor read) any one calling Kresy Wschodnie oficially 'Ziemie Utracone' (in contrast to oficialhood of the 'Ziemie Odzyskane' term) - the only name you will hear every is just 'Kresy Wschodnie'

Language / Need Advice On Polish-English language barrier (my Polish boyfriend and his family) [59]

hi Mina

maybe you should try learning Polish from someone on skype - there are offers to teach Polish for English there
also trying to read Polish helps very much - you should start with simple things - perhaps you can find some children's books on ebay or allegro.pl (which is ebay's equivallent in Poland)

just found it - a recent Polish skype teaching offer on these forums Polish lessons on skype.

Study / AFRICAN STUDENTS INVASION in Krakow [197]

it has something to do with the magic of Kraków - not all of places in Poland are welcoming to black people (smaller cities for example)

History / The smallest Poland ever? [115]

those Albanians always lived in Kosovo.

not true - they have settled Serbian lands devastated by Turkish invasions (14th-16th centuries) - Kosovo was a cradle of Serbian statehood - why do you think 8th century monasteries are all over the place (or rather were)

Incidentally, why "sadly"? Have you managed to forget that Serbia was and is backed by Russia for many years? If you want to know why Poland recognises Kosovo - there's your answer.

Poland or rather Tusk government recognised Kosovo to brown-nose Germans and the French and perhaps the US

News / Poland's Lost Generation [172]

why would we want to change anything? I "tried" the west- didnt like it. We just need better economy, and it is growing so hurray!!!

because it will spectacularily tumble down into the place Greece is at the moment???
if the economy is growing why the tax revenues are falling?

Language / Meaning of the words: na północy/południu? [10]

well the origins of the the Slavic word for south - jug/jih can be more or less explained - it most probably comes from an Indo-European root of

aug - you see the root in words like Latin augere (to increase) and words in various Indoeuropean languages meaning to increase or to grow - very similar semantically to the Slavic jug is Lithuanian aukśtas meaning high

I haven't seen any etymology of the Slavic word for north (sever) so far

Language / Meaning of the words: na północy/południu? [10]

południe - literally midday - is the direction the sun is at noon - północ - literally midnight is where the sun is supposed to be at midnight (the direction) and it sort of actually is there - of course południe and północ are oposite directions

one can argue that południe is a calque from Latin word meridies - which has both meanings as in Polish (it is no surprise as Polish was heavily influenced by Latin in many ways)

don't know about północ word

other Slavic languages (that I know) share words to describe directions of North and South that are of old proto-Slavic origin

@Torq
you have missed very important point - that the Polish cryptologists broke a couple of Russian codes they used to command and coordinate their armies (using radio communication) and the cryptologists even managed to feed the Bolshevik troops with fake orders (that created a gap in Russian forces that the Polish counter-offensive exploited)

yeah sure peaceful - like bend over and take it - Russians learned about coal deposits in the area and they wanted to have'em - and the communist puppets obliged - end of the story

History / United States of America Vs Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth [74]

Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and America are very different in many aspects - one major for example is PLC never had powerful standing army (because of fear of the noble classes that the kings will take the country over like in the West or in Russia) contrary to America

.a Pole presides over the EU-parliament etc..

and has power to do what???

btw he is from PO and to my eyes he is a renegade - and hmm he did some sort of nasty things while serving as a prime minister which many including me realized only recently

You are soon taking over the EU-presidency for 6 months..

and you are allowed to do what during your presidency - change the European Constitution or whatever this lengthy document is called?

What would you do without blaming Germany....
Is there any polish wart not the fault of mean Germany???

you are actually ridiculing yourself trying to ridicule me - sure there are internal problems that are not Germany's fault - but since you are German and we are discussing Polish-German relationships I point to the issues that come up with that relationship

Take an even wider look and compare rising Poland to the real hellholes of this planet and then maybe you change your priorities.

the wider look is that as the prices hikes (energy taxes) you are gonna impose on Poland (Germany led EU) will in effect lead to lots of people in Poland (who are currently working and not making much money) not able to earn their living - will it be better than Africa then?

I have found some figure for 2009

have found next figure - year 2010 - Polish contribution to Brussels aka EU - 17 mld 901 mln 683 tys. zł. - more than 4 billion euro

already in 2008 Polish payment into the EU was bigger than that of Sweden - I don't know however how much we received back

News / The best Poland ever? [125]

well I have seen many different approaches to see if Poland is paying to the EU or receiving from the EU - yes - you might be surprised - Poland is paying loads of cash to Brussels - the question remains if what we factually receive is more or less than what we pay

I have found some figure for 2009 - I don't know yet if it a reliable one - but still - it was 12.573.808 tys. zł - i.e 12.5 billion zloty - about 3 billion euro

developing at an astronomic pace

hmm, really??

oh and the billions of EU support

well I have seen many different approaches to see if Poland is paying to the EU or receiving from the EU - yes - you might be surprised - Poland is paying loads of cash to Brussels - the question remains if what we factually receive is more or less than what we pay

and to remind you what I have already written here - but I will love to repeat it - according to Mr Po(e)ttering (btw who was Mr Pottering in 2007) in 2007 the 'New Europe' cost each citizen of 'Old Europe' 26 euro - how much do you spend on your gas (I mean gasoline) monthly??

are you saying we are working against our own coal industry? and our electricity generating? is it that the Poles are so fu**ed up that they wish to impose heavy taxes on their own coal??? -

News / The best Poland ever? [125]

Well...we are working on alternatives...but for the next few years do you have a better idea? Even if we would still only use the ones over Poland it would still come from Russia....where do you think most of Polands energy comes from???

most Polish energy comes from coal and Germany also works hard to make it worse for Poland and its coal powered electricity

As the spats with Poland

just looked up what spat means - my dictionary says it means a short unimportant quarrel - after a few grumbles by Mr Kaczyński you decided that you will be better off with Russia as a strategic partner - interesting - and Russia is at least patronising (if you really object to calling Russia a neo-imperialist political entity) to Poland even now (even as Mr Tusk is trying to build good impressions among Polish society by maintaining we have finally achieved good relationships with Russia)

I remember a proposal to Warsaw to build some branches so that Poland would get also gas from Nord Stream....now guess how the potatoe heads reacted!

well I am not that knowledgeable but how do you actually build and operate branches of a submarine pipeline??

News / Poland's Lost Generation [172]

The young generation is puzzling. They are open-minded and self-reliant. (Almost 2 million Poles, most of them young, have emigrated west since 2004, when Poland joined the European Union.)

were they really self-reliant they wouldn't wash the dishes in Pakistani restaurants and English pubs

News / The best Poland ever? [125]

we will see how long they will serve cause - the existing pipelines are enough at the moment - on the other hand Nord Stream can thoroughly replace them in terms of capacity - so we will see if the existing pipelines will still serve

Well, the article is of 2008, now is 2011 and I never heard of russian problems to deliver.
And once we paid Germany expects to get the gas so or so...*shrugs*

I don't wish anyone to run out of fuel or not to have enough money to buy it - well strategic German-Russian partnership and the new Nord Stream can actually prevent shortages in Germany even if Russia is short of gas - other countries will most probably suffer then - still you are siding with the devil - if Russia is not neoimperialistic then I don't know what you call it - remember those journalists that dared to write truth about Chechnya wars (like Mr Politkovskaya)

Do you mean only a pipeline over polish lands would show true partnership?

no I say talking about things and trying to reach compromise is - Germany never tried to

News / The best Poland ever? [125]

partners are considering each other's concerns and interests - Germany does not seem to consider Polish interests and concerns - in many fields an agreement/compromise can be achieved - there was enough goodwill on the Polish side even in the times of Kaczyńskis - still Germany in many cases wanted to have it their way (like say have a pipeline under the Baltic for contracts and concessions in Russia or that new brilliant European Constitution - Germany claimed Europe needs strong leaders - are Mr Van Rompuy or Mrs Ashton strong leaders? - I just think Germany wanted to have more control over Europe (in agreement with France and Italy) )

Russias gas budget margin
a quote from the link - As a result of this new situation, during the winter of 2007/2008, Gazprom almost totally exhausted its underground gas reservoirs.

care to comment???
