News / Polish Airline LOT has the biggest fleet of 737-8MAX in continental Europe..grounded [18]

With it's exciting new "crash the plane" feature!

Where do I sign up!

the nature of a free choice in correlated with risk. You win some, you lose some yet it's your own choice.

I'm sure those people whose job is to make detailed risk assessments and stringent safety regulations in order to minimise the possibility of paying customers, staff or anyone else getting maimed or killed would have plenty to say about that.

Real Estate / Bill to support Swiss currency mortgage in Poland [4]

Does anyone have any news of what is happening

Some of those people who said repeatedly and often at the time that others were daft not to get a mortgage in Swiss Francs and dafter when they suggested it might not be a great idea to get a mortgage in a foreign currency you don't have or earn and are now eating catfood to keep up with their payments might be able to advise you.

was one of the President's election promises but he walked it back fairly soon

It was just a false election promise. Those of us voters who weren't so gullible/greedy would have a lot to say about using our tax zlotych to bail out those who were without getting our own (normal zloty) mortgages subsidised too.

Life / Would Poles prefer US or UK medical care? [112]

Far better than waiting 6 months year or more to be seen for a surgery like in UK

I waited 2 weeks.

The NHS does its job very well. It would be strange to have to think about paying money to have medical treatment and wondering what your insurance does or doesn't cover....

Life / Would Poles prefer US or UK medical care? [112]

As to healthcare each system has it's good and bad sides. But I would rather live in a country with universal health care

It's still excellent after 70 years.

The thought of having anything even vaguely similar to America's crappy 'system' where thousands go bankrupt every year in order to pay medical 'bills' and where sick people have to decide if they can afford the so-called copay for a visit to the doctor or practice nurse doesn't appeal.

Life / Would Poles prefer US or UK medical care? [112]

American medical care,

Nobody who has experience of a better system (i.e. those in most developed countries) would want that.

The idea of people having to borrow money or sell their home for medical treatment doesn't appeal. Individual patients paying full price for medication (set by private companies!) also seems an odd thing to do in a society which can afford better and can use economies of scale.

Study / What do Poles think of a foreign person who tries to learn Polish [47]

Now that's not exactly beginners' level now, is it....

There are some very good online tests to assess language level, including Polish. What used to be called beginners', now pre-A1, just means the person can say a few simple things about them and their daily lives with frequent errors and a strain for the listener.

UK, Ireland / British men don't really like women [137]

Would The English be interested in making St.Georges Day a public holiday?I doubt it.

It's been discussed, and is at a time of year that doesn't need a holiday. Any new one is more likely to be in the autumn.

And would they have a party to celebrate?I doubt that too.

This exists, as does flying St. George's flag.

Brass Band tradition such as the colliery bands of the north of England.

Don't forget the clog dancers in Bacup. If you've never seen it, have a look. It's amazing!

Classifieds / Fabricator sought for 1:1 scale mockup for MSPO Defence Exhibition. [14]

These people might be able to help with the model (or put you in touch with someone local who can). They'd also know about transporting large items to trade fairs/exhibitions.

Most of their people do smaller items/art pieces, but by no means all of them. Some do larger items/industrial.

Life / Poles against gay marriages. Really? [120]

Why do you have to pay gay peoples social benefits ?

Quite. Why does he have to pay anyone's social benefits, and why would anyone else have to pay his?

Like filing as a married couple instead of individually

In a lot of places it's much better to file individually....

Genealogy / So My Dad Had His DNA Tested; And... [22]

Too bad Huffington Post and MSNBC don't report on things like this.

Probably because they don't make things up like that Jones person.

Somehow I'm 3% East Asian when none of my siblings are (including a twin). One had some Jewish heritage and another African.

Normal. DNA is like a scattergun. As I said already, we don't have the DNA of every ancestor, nor is siblings; DNA identical (unless they're identical twins).

Though the DNA submitted by his distant relatives.

And the 'Wearside Ripper', caught when his nephew was arrested for a minor offence.

That's Alex Jones. He makes stuff up...

And Nicki certainly isn't worried; she is pleased with the result.

Genealogy / So My Dad Had His DNA Tested; And... [22]

Seriously, these DNA tests seem interesting if someone wants to know the journey of their evolution.

Worth remembering that they're not complete; we don't have the DNA of all our ancestors, even when we look 5 generations back, not all their DNA has been passed on.

I'm pleased, Nicki, that you've found something out, whether or not it's accurate. Just remember that the really important thing is who you are now, not who your great-great-granny was.

News / Poland blocks any action on climate change [569]

No longer a minority

A tiny minority. The overwhelming majority of scientists accept the fact of man-made climate change.

Lose what?

News / Poland blocks any action on climate change [569]

Feel free to be in the odd minority who deny the very real fact of man-made climate change.

It is a conclusion based on observations of a great many global indicators, accepted by the overwhelming majority of scientists, the vast majority of whom have no vested financial interest in the theory.

But hey, some guy on the internet pretends it's a hoax.

Life / Cigarette prices in Poland [27]

it's usuallly the small tobacco shops that can have them cheaper

There's something in that. There's one under Dw Centralny (unless it's vanished) that sold only cigs and specialised in bulk buys. Giant bags of tobacco too.
