Travel / Watch out for airport personnel stealing stuff on regional Polish airports. [64]

put locks or buy insurance, make sure your luggage is secured with locking devices.

If you don't have locked luggage or insurance then you have only yourself to blame. Security at Polish airports is no worse than in many other countries.

Funny how it's always trolling guests who complain about Polish airports/airlines etc. I don't have much reason to complain (well, not since the Etiuda terminal closed anyway, haha).

Work / Turkish bachelor student wants to study and live in Poland [22]

This is the third turk in a number of days who has come on here looking for a hand out.

Ha :) It never ceases to amaze me just how many non-Europeans seem to have suddenly developed an "interest" in Poland and its culture recently, and therefore wish to "study" there :)

These guys remind me of all those Indians on UK Border Force/Dog Squad, etc. They come to the UK as "students", planning to study at fake colleges, and think that they can fool the UKBA by stating that they are here to study for a diploma in "Business Work" :D

The game is usually up when they try to convince the immigration officer that you can get to London Bridge from Hounslow on the Piccadilly line, with no change of trains :)

Now that the UK is getting harder to get into, they think they can try and get away with it in Poland instead!

I want to study business management

It always seems to be "business management" (or similar) for some reason, doesn't it? What does that mean exactly, anyway? How to run a kebab shop or a grocer?? lol

Language / Does 'Pimsleur Method' work? [4]

I've used it for Cantonese, mainly because I knew I wouldn't need to learn much, so there was no point in trying to learn to read and write the language (although I know what a few words like 香港 mean when I see them, lol).

In some ways, it's the most "natural" way of learning a language, as we learn our first language like this - we learn to speak before we can read or write the words.

However, I usually prefer to read and write what I'm learning to speak, so I wouldn't use it for European languages, but that's just a personal preference.

Love / help needed to warn off troublesome pole [25]

This isn't a Polish issue, it's an "insecure weirdo stalker" issue, so you know what to do. It's nothing to do with "Polishness" - change "Polish" for any race/nationality/ethnicity, and you could get the same.

Besides, why on earth has your son still got her number, three years on?

If you've got Polish lodgers, then you don't need advice from "Polish" (I use the term advisedly) forum. Guests often post this type of thread on here, to hide an anti-Polish subtext, so you may understand why some of us may suspect your motives.

UK, Ireland / My dream about UK. Please help. [86]

Be careful where you shop in London. I had to pay £5 for a little tub of ice-cream. Rip-off!

It's only a few days since I bought a tub of ice cream in London, and it only cost £1.99. You probably go in pubs where it's £7.00 a pint as well. They really saw you coming didn't they? I bet you bought a "Camden Town" T-shirt as well :p

You are Polish if...

You drive past an Etap Hotel and you think it says Ełap Hotel :)

You walk past a butcher's and you see "Pork Pies" in the window, and you think "WTF is a pork dog?? " :)

Language / Dwa vs. dwie in Polish [85]

You can laugh at Polish grammar etc. all you like, but at least Polish will never have a "It's spelled Raymond Luxury-Yacht, but it's pronounced 'Throatwobbler Mangrove' " situation, haha :)

"Damsell in distress." How useful it is for me future Proficiency exam.
However no dictionary says what is damsel. Just silly joke.

It's an old-fashioned word which no-one uses in English, except when they use the phrase "damsel in distress" - a bit like in Polish, where no-one really uses the word "niewiasta" except at church, lol.

It means "panienka w niebezpieczeństwie" (czyli "kobieta potrzebująca pomocy") in Polish, and it's a mild insult, as it implies that the woman is weak and helpless, and needs a man to rescue her.

Surprise for me. I mentioned I registered on a page for Au-pairs, I got two offers of work today, one of them is from London.
Now I will have to consider if the dream will become a reality.

Good news. :)

But I feel happy I started the thread.

As you should be. Ignore the people who criticise; the internet is full of people who complain/criticise, but it's usually because they have no ambition themselves.

However...

Either
Stay with friends while you find your feet and a job
Or
Get a job to go to.

... this is still good advice, because one has to be practical ;)

@Meathead
Good advice. It's clear that you're capable of far more than just nanny work, so use it as a step towards something better (e.g. teaching).

Ah the UK dream. Is there even one?

It's better to have a dream, than to have no ambition at all.

For the type of work you've mentioned, I'd recommend a magazine called 'The Lady'.

There is such a magazine?? Mind you, I didn't know there was a magazine called "Chicken Week" until I watched HIGNFY haha :)

Speed dating on PF, hmm? You, jokers. ;)

Back to reality, then:

:D

I'm surprised that this thread hasn't been swamped by the usual non-European "guest" types, with their predictable "I offer Polish woman job/room/marrieds" messages, complete with mobile phone numbers and Hotmail addresses... ;)

Anybody of the nice men interested? London, me, May or June and you, hmm, NorthMancPolak, for example or dtaylor5632,

Never trust a man in a skirt who fries Mars bars ;)

and,one last thing, expand your search outside of London,

No, don't. Seriously, don't. Been there, done that, regretted it, etc.

you will end up financially trapped there.

You can become financially trapped anywhere, and I know this from bitter experience. It's better to be where the work is. And, let's face it, that's generally within the M25. Sad but true.

Yep, most earnings will be taken up.

Not necessarily. My disposable income has always been way higher in London, and that's what really counts, not the outgoings.

Aww... noreenb's coming to the UK :D You were always one of the (few) nice people on here. There's always plenty of room for intelligent, educated Polish women here in London - it's not as easy to find work as it was a few years ago, but it's still much easier than everywhere else. Go for it, or you'll regret it when you get old haha! I can't help, as I know nothing about au pairs or teachers (unfortunately, I know a bit too much about a few people from Bydgoszcz lol, but that's off-topic haha :) ), but good luck anyway ;)

UK, Ireland / Why Manchester rules over Warsaw :) [65]

But the weather, man..the weather, how do you cope?

We're used to it :) I wouldn't want to deal with 40 degree summers like they have in Wrocław either :)

And it's the climate which helped make Manchester wealthy in the first place, so don't knock it ;)

Oh, I've just thought of a couple more to add to the list:

18. Piccadilly Station just totally rules over Warszawa Centralna (but then, where doesn't? lol). And I didn't even mention Warszawa Zachodnia, did I. That would be cruel, even for me :D

19. We've got loads of branches of TK MAXX, so we can wear designer clothes at half price, which makes us look classy; while you have to dress in chavvy fake market clothes at normal prices, which makes you look Polish :p

Life / Foreigners in Poland and what they think of us [54]

Outside of Poland is there a reason to learn Polish,,probably not??
In Chicago it could be helpful, not anywhere else in the US or the rest of the world for that matter. Why would anybody want to learn a language that you will never use unless you move to Poland? If I were to do that, I would be studying for months beforehand out of respect.

Are you referring to people who aren't from Poland, but are of Polish origin (like me), or people who aren't?

If it's the former, I totally disagree - there's plenty of places (in Europe, at least) where Polish is useful. I've found it an incredibly useful language, and if I had children, there is absolutely no doubt that they would be taught to speak Polish, whether my partner was Polish or not (hopefully not, lol :D ).

If, however, you meant the latter, then I totally agree - particularly if you're planning on moving there or to go on holiday there, and like to do as I do when going abroad (learn a language out of respect/curiosity, etc).

These are just off the top of my head

Good choices. I'm still struggling to see everything worth seeing round here, and I've lived here a while now. There's simply not enough weekends in a year! :)

There are worse that have come out of London

True.

Simply Red are pants and Mick Hucknall's a t***, but at least he can sing.

Virtually no Manchester bands glorify gun/knife crime, or encourage the burning of gays - unlike a lot of London's MC "talent" these days.

I suppose he thought that the Japanese would like it?

The Japanese are a little strange though, so who knows what they would like? I wouldn't have a clue!

But they do seem to like walking around with cameras, and there's plenty to photograph round here - I always take my camera with me on days with nice weather, and there's enough to keep me going for a long time yet :)

Love / Are there Polish women who date black guys? [281]

But I don't think I've ever seen a forum with so many generalized thread headings. Simply sets PF apart.

They edit perfectly good thread titles, but can't be bothered editing ungrammatical ones.

"Is there Polish women that date black guys?" indeed :D

unless you were rabidly obsessed with late 19th C industrial architecture.

Some of us are though :)

But you could say the same about several Polish cities, really. Why go to Gdansk unless you like Hanseatic architecture? ;)

Love / Are there Polish women who date black guys? [281]

Why do you assume that the women prefer one race over the other?

Have you really never met any women who say things like "I only date black/white, etc men"? It's not only white men who tend to prefer their own race, believe it or not! ;)

Maybe they just don't care about the race of the person they're with?

Or maybe they do?

Just because you prefer one race, doesn't mean you hate the rest. Even those who like to "mix and match" a bit often go back to their own kind eventually.

I used to know a girl who spent a very long time ONLY going out with black Africans - but when she decided to have children, she found herself a white man instead. I must admit I was very surprised! I'm sure that some of us have a few theories about why that may be, but I'm not in the mood.
