Life / Latin VS Polish cultures. [13]

I purposely didn't say anything about the differences in temperament, because, based on my personal experiences, I could not make that generalization.

Life / Polands' Generation Y = instant generation [22]

Regardless of how the job was obtained, it's the job performance that weeds them out.
We had a inappropriately dressed kid barely out of high school that seemingly did not much else except organize zombie games during lunch (players got extra perks such as graphics cards and memory boosts), but after he left for greener pastures, we never found a candidate that does not complain that the job requires a whole department, not just one person.

Life / Latin VS Polish cultures. [13]

you are right, Wlodzimierz, but you're really pointing out one of the differences between the cold and hot weather cultures.
In hot-weather culture, showing precisely on time for a social engagement is viewed with suspicion.. even asking what time is the supper will cause raised eyebrows. ;)

They are not as task oriented as we are. Relationships play a bigger role.

News / Poland's John Paul the Great canonisation this year [177]

.It means that many things people think of as facts are in fact only theories.

but you also have to consider the fact that "Young earth creationism is essentially the position that all of modern science, 90% of living scientists and 98% of living

biologists, all major university biology departments, every major science journal, the American Academy of Sciences, and
every major science organization in the world, are all wrong regarding the origins and development of life....but one
particular tribe of uneducated, bronze aged, goat herders got it exactly right."

News / General strike 11th September in Poland? [26]

Is there a way to find out what are the workers' demands without getting bogged down in politics, names, parties?

The original link lists only one: "Jak mówią, powrócą do jej prac po spełnieniu ich postulatów m.in. po wycofaniu się przez rząd ze zmian w kodeksie pracy przedłużającym maksymalnie do 12 miesięcy okres rozliczeniowy czasu pracy"

Does this mean what I think it means, that the government allows up to 12 months for the worker to get paid?

Life / Poland's Environment, recycling [79]

Rinsing the beer bottles before putting it in the recycling bin?
That's just not happening in my neighborhood.
Hopefully, the couple thousand degree heat used in processing cleans it all up.

Work / Corporate integration or blackmail in Poland's companies? [30]

Does everyone get to go on these Integrations?

I do. Once I got sucked into an organizing committee for one of these things, since then I go out of respect for others that had to work on them.

That said, on the one I helped organize, we got them a cool young band, surfing lessons and kayaks.

Work / Corporate integration or blackmail in Poland's companies? [30]

Thanks, Alex

Personally, I co-operate with my colleagues.

Maybe he works setting up machines in production.
One place where I found cooperation virtually impossible is on manufacturing floor. Caste system rules there.

Work / Corporate integration or blackmail in Poland's companies? [30]

Most companies I know come up with these employee get togethers to gain some points on the "best place to work" ladder.
Blackmail is really a stretch, mostly because everyone will know if you got drunk and made an ass of yourself at the company picnic.
As far as these get-togethers being a booze-up, that is not my experience either.
All companies I know of are too concerned with their liabilities, and will try to limit the imbibing rather then promote it.
Nobody really needs to resort to these methods. The only reason to be so paranoid is if you're not a desirable employee. Then, everybody's out to get you.

Find something you like to do, and do it well is the best recipe.

Life / Expat, immigrant, foreigner. Not all foreigners in Poland are expats. [84]

I know of two couples, friends of my parents, that moved back to Poland. They all planned to retire there. Both returned to the US. One couple decided to retire in US, second couple is still undecided and keeping residences in both countries.

Life / Polish vs British vs American - Clash of cultures [390]

That`s what I meant.

Duh.. I realized this after the re-write time-out. I was too excited to share how else you can shame people into picking after their dog. Two photos - one of dog doing their business, one of them walking away. Telephoto lens, low angle... I see a business opportunity! LOL

Life / Polish vs British vs American - Clash of cultures [390]

my experience was just an opposite - friends and neighbours supported each other's black market schemes, political jokes and other small rebellions. Of course, there were snitches, as everywhere, and opportunists that didn't mind hurting others to get ahead, but Poles were not as brainwashed about reporting neighbours like Cubans are, for example, where every block has a "patriotic" watchman.

But if a Pole saw a violent crime on an innocent, such as a child being abused, they dropped a dime without hesitation, both then and now.

That said, I would not report somebody that didn't clean up after their dog. I would express my displeasure directly to them, and if they're big and mean, I'd take pictures and shame them on internet. :)

I actually done this to a family that was leaving the beach, and all their garbage, behind them.
