News / Poland back to reality after Sunday ? [30]

His death educated people around the globe about Katyn and maybe just for this alone, he deserves Wawel. If anything, this is his greatest accomplishment, unfortunately in death.

The claim that he kept Poland divided..well...no president in ANY country satisfies everybody. Quite normal. He was the best he could be, nobody can say that he was corrupted and ready to kiss a** of anybody who decided to throw a bone his way.

Will there be a fight for power after people wipe dry their eyes and noses after the funeral? You betcha!

News / Kaczynski to be buried at Wawel ?! [289]

I guess Polonia always has the opposite view, but you're right. Poles in Poland and only they should decide their future.

News / Kaczynski to be buried at Wawel ?! [289]

I don't think I have ever met someone who liked him.

Really? Then how do you explain the crowds of mourning, crying people?
I think he was very patriotic and kept Poland from away from the liberal left. Maybe in a stubborn and not very diplomatic way, which many did not like, but still appreciated by others.

News / Poland President National Mourning in Some Countries [212]

It is really heart warming to hear so many countries declared a day of mourning.

Tusk was driving Poland too close to arrogant powers

I'm afraid Poland will move way too much to the left with him. I don't trust him.

to acquire aid in learning the Polish language along with other slavic languages, given the scarcity of teachers here in the states

I don't know where you live, but can take polish language courses at Community colleges in and around Chicago. Perhaps, other cities as well.

History / Anger at yet another Polish tragedy [30]

Businesses should be closed so people can capture the spirit of it.

yeah...sure...close the businesses and schools for a week and keep the church open...

The only day they should close is the day of funeral. Otherwise, there is plenty of time to express your sorrow and attend church services after work or school.

Law / What do you think about the Gerlach company? [28]

It has always been known as the best knife maker in Poland.

I have an old Gerlach packet knife (about 30years) with some handy, little tools on it. I'm sure it will outlive me, if i don't lose it first...I hope the company is still just as good :)

Life / Pictures of Poles [Everyday Life in Poland] [100]

Beautiful pictures. Thank you posters for your time and effort.
Poland could improve accommodations and service; then make lots of money on tourism!

How come this forum is not moderated and people are allowed to make racist remarks ?

Hey, sometimes many members here wonder about it too! People would never dare to say things like that to anybody's face, but at times it feels like PF is a playground for bored losers, haters and cowards.

Genealogy / Polish people with freckles?? [9]

Why do you think that freckles are a result of living in a certain region of Poland? Most likely, you just inherited the gene from either side of your family.

Maybe your grandma's sister had a natural, fire engine red hair and freckles? :)

Food / Stuffed cabbage - gołąbki - recipe [59]

Krysia, It's got to be a special recipe... Right? I never seen a killed rat on the road even more - ran over multiple times, but I did see lots and lots of raccoons. Do you think I can substitute? It sounds scrumptious. LOL.

Kidding aside, stuffed cabbage done right rocks! It's gotta have mushroom sauce, forget the tomato or even worse - ketchup.

Life / Do Polish People steal a lot? [330]

some Poles are thieves and some steal a lot.

Hmmm, really? I'm yet to meet a person who did not take something it was not theirs to begin with. There is something about people who want stuff for free and if it is not guarded ..it's gone. Take a look at youtube, it's amazing what people will "steal' when not watched. It is a big difference between stealing and robbing.

Do you spend half of your life thinking of stupid things to post?

Actually, I think his postings are innovative and perhaps a result of some internet research. Anything stupid would be just your comment.

History / Life in communism vs democracy in Poland [234]

No, I'm not an accountant but I use one every March... :)
If we did not 'waste' energy, we would not have to "save" it. Do you know how hot offices are kept in the winter in this country? I could wear a tank top and shorts at work every winter! However in the summer, they are chilled so much that I need to keep a sweater on.

I consider it a total waste of energy. Why do we have windows which we can not open? Imagine the electricity saved during April or May, when we could keep the windows open instead of turning the air on? It is still free. Simple.

Only: Profit, profit, profit, money, money, money. Now my poor generation has to clean up and pay for your idiocy.

but scrappy..don't you agree that we're all working for money? All everybody wants is enough money for a good, decent living. So maybe the corporate greed goes too far, especially at the top, but they at least know how to take care about their employees and would always throw you a bone (bigger or smaller) but enough to get you a house and a good living...it worked, it still does.

Get the green 'thing' going and your generation will be into a huge profit and a huge money pile in no time! ;)

Well...without clean-tech there won't be many more generations

It's not the clean-tech what's going to save the Earth. The Earth can take care of itself as it did for centuries and millenniums.

Who needs another landfill?

use the capitalistic approach and turn the escaping gases into energy.

Lying and cheating, falsifying earnings reports, creating more credit crises? Nobody needs them.

yeah, some is true, but who is going to figure out your taxes in the IRS corn maze or get your a** out of trouble when you need it?

Stop yearning for a muzzle of the good ol' communist regime.

and who needs a pile of glass and paper to recycle? And who wants to turn the light on and off every time you walk into a bathroom to "save" a few pennies on electricity and ultimately - to save energy? How long will the next generation be happy 'saving'?

The green energy trend is just as strong as the lawyers and accountants in the 80's. This too shall pass. What will be fashionable next?

Usually the anthem of someone who doesn't have it

Well, not really. I have it as for now...

Didn't that involve some backbreaking labor on the farm

Yes it did then and it does now. Americans have always worked hard and even more so now being scared of loosing the job.

Love / All Polish women can't be nutters can they? [257]

That sort of behavior is not untypical with western women who have become spoiled and childlike.

Western women can actually say and behave the way they want. There might be consequences to some who are not connected, but most will win, as they should. It has nothing to be with being childlike. We've come a long way baby.

History / Life in communism vs democracy in Poland [234]

There is nothing wrong with paying the bills doing what you like, but saying that money is not everything is. Making money and supporting yourself with it is everybody's the ultimate goal. Try to be poor and happy, just watching yourself how your neighbor(coworker, friend, a family memeber..you name it) living the life style you actually want.

Hey Youngsters above...it's so cute to read your noble posts, but believe me, at the end of the day money is what matters. The noble happiness without it just does not work in the real life. Are you back in the 18 century romanticism? It's great to hear a serenade played in front of my windows, but it f**n does not pay the bills.

Food / Polish Herring Appetizer [21]

Fine restaurants all over the world serve Beef Tartare.

I've never seen one on the menu at any restaurant in the USA, but I have not been to every fine restaurant there is, so i might be wrong. Anything close and quite popular would be a 'rare' fillet mignon, when the plate looks pretty bloody after the first cut. I don't like the look. I prefer the polish way for a raw meat.

I like steak tar-tare and I can get it at most, better Polish restaurants in Chicago - if I want one. My friend makes them excellent at home. I never tried to do it myself, however.

I love herring anyway it is made. The amount of calcium in it can only be beat by a can of sardines, which to me don't taste as good.

Viva a good plate of herring! :)
