Food / How to find Halal Food in Poznan (Muslim food in Poland) [55]

lol, maybe the cost of slaughtering is cheaper in SA and offset the first class cost?

I do not think so
if you transport a live animal you have to ensure it does not die enroute
so the animal needs more space and needs to be watered and most likely fed along the way (although I would not feel like eating

but then again, I am not a sheep)

compare this to killing the animal in the UK, removing the offal and lights (that is organs and guts for everyone who has just finished lunch)

then freezing them and cramming as many as you can into a refridgerated container and shipping them

it is much more economical to ship them frozen

the reason is that the congregation (for want of a better word) want to see the spectacle associated with the sheep being offed in public

the slaughtering is not that inhumane. these muftis are handy with a blade. it is the live transport which I am against

and before the Islam bashing ghouls crawl out of the woodwork, sheep that are slaughtered using 'modern Western' methods are not
exactly given a last meal, blindfold and a cigarette

I cannot guarantee if the embassy will be able to give you the info you seek as it is usually manned by little old ladies who are not exactly human dynamos

however if you get a particularly answer from the Nigerian embassy, you can always pretend to be Ghanian (if that is what people from Ghana are called) and call their embassy to see if the stories match.

happy hustling

Are you sure - appalling? I know in Ireland there are frequent 'monitored' trips (various sensors, cctv etc) for live exports in order to provide evidence of reasonable welfare.

it is nasty

I have heard all sorts of stories and none of them nice, once leaving the EU things can go a bit pear-shaped

as far as I am concerned it does not matter if they travel business class in their own individual beds with matching pillows and their initials embroidered on the eiderdown and even if a man is employed to spray them with Calvin Klein's Obession.... for sheep at regular intervals,

I still would prefer that they were offed as near to the farm as possible and deep frozen, then shipped

poor sheep......surely some mufti in Birmingham or Berlin could do it?

they could slit a sheep's throat before it had time to say 'baah'

but they don't

as far as I remember (and I never check facts before posting as I consider it to be the equivalent of taking a set of encyclopedias into a pub quiz)

after Ramadan there is the festival of Eid where understandably people are quite hungry and want to have a feed
and watch the sheep getting offed in public in a scene not disimilar to something out of Spartacus Blood and Sand

it is the spectacle that the public enjoy

if the sheep had been offed in a slaughterhouse in Droitwich in would not have the same effect

it is not quite as exciting for them to hear the mufti say 'and we are just opening the doors on the refridgerated lorry now'

all slaughter houses are 'barbaric' I suppose, so to say 'oh we kill our animals better than you' is just sad, unless you actually have first hand experience and knowledge of the inside of both kinds of abbatoir. Which I doubt.

hence my paraphrasing of y'all without sin can cast the first stone

I am not happy with live exports of sheep though. they get shipped from Europe to Saudi in appalling conditions just to get their throats cut by a mufti

it is not the method of slaughter that I protest against but the suffering that the animal must endure in order to get to Saudi

presuming the country that you were from originally has an embassy in Poland, you might want to give them a call from a pay phone

however I do not feel good about helping people break the law

do have the good taste not to send me a PM

News / Polish Diaspora - many of these 20 million actually speak Polish? [79]

Can't speak Polish, can't be Polish. It's as simple as that.

utter rot

do you speak Gaelic?
erm no doubt the answer is likely to be a big fat no

does that make you any less Scottish?

I have met lots of Polish people born in Poland who moved abroad with their parents
and they returned to Poland without being able to communicate in Polish

does that make them less Polish?

News / Polish Diaspora - many of these 20 million actually speak Polish? [79]

The exact quote, if I remember, was: "Poland isn't so much a country as a disturbed state of mind"!

I have not seen the film in 20 years but I am sure he said being Polish has got nothing to do with geographic location it is a state of mind

I have not read the book

I am sure he did not say that being Polish was a dangerous pathology. this line certainly did not appear in the film

I am interested in DD's theory about what is the essence of being Polish. He raises some good points. Thanks for that

Being Polish is clearly an attitude

I appreciate your reply

so are you saying 'being Polish is not a nationality, it is an attitude'

or perhaps you are alluding to Quentin Crisp when he said 'being Polish has nothing to do with geographical location, it is a state of mind' ?

USA, Canada / A typical Polish American wedding [25]

By time the 3rd generation came on. They have no knowledge of Polish customs.

surely they must still crack the wafers on Christmas Eve?

no one expects them to follow all Polish customs to the letter but they must retain some of the more major ones, surely?

the easiest customs to retain are the ones which involve rolling up at a Polish restaurant and taking in the decor and ambience

Real Estate / Who designs houses in Poland? [66]

I disagree that Polish architects are visionaries. Strongly disagree.

some of them are good

I read about an architect's office from Poznan where they won awards for Poznan airport, Stary Browar and the Targi building (the one that does not look like a bloomin space rocket)

bit strong Sir, however perhaps the following anecdote might be appreciated by our colonial friends

I have never been to Portugal. I do not have any family from Portugal but I know plenty of people who have been there
I have heard lots of nice stories, know that they produce good food and wine and believe it to be a nice place

I would not try to give Portuguese people advice on how to run their country, neither would I vote in the Portuguese elections if allowed

You never idealize anything?

what utter tosh. read my post about the Polish wedding.
you can respect your heritage and be proud of it by all means
and the wedding video sums this up perfectly

I will reiterate, I found it utterly charming

big difference between keeping traditions alive and sticking your beak where it does not belong
in an environment you know nothing about

you are absolutely spot on
however Trevek was asking whether in theory they ought to be able to go to the UK
and the answer appears to be a resounding yes

if you are an illegal, speak Polish and are settled, what point is there to go to the UK
if you are a student who overstayed their visa, hustling just to survive (excuse the 1970s US ghetto parlance)
and speaking English, you might be better off in Blighty

thank you for sharing

it fact I will go further by saying you have a lovely looking family

the dancing was great, the costumes looked superb and everyone looked to be having a wonderful time

utterly enchanting

just for the record, I do not have any problem with Polish Americans

making out that they can do a far better job of running Poland than the elected Polish politicians somewhat gets my goat
and as for the rose tinted imagery of Poland as Paradise Lost (no doubt told to them by a gibbering grandparent) it is just
a red rag to a bull

Does it allow Polish citizenship... therefore the right to travel to UK?

it would do

you would not legally be able to keep them out

interesting article the first one

''About 70,000 foreigners are living in Poland illegally according to national statistics.

Poland has passed two similar abolition acts in 2003 and 2007, as a result of which, approximately 4,500 foreigners legalized their stay in the country. ''

If I were an illegal immigrant I would be very careful
the odds of you getting amnesty do not look great

Travel / Tips/suggestions/do's and don't of going to Poland....? [55]

the good thing about Polish is once you learn to read in Polish
it is an absolute doddle

words are written as they are said

none of this chough, cough, trough, though, through multiple vowel sounds malarkey

Law / What are chances for Poland to join in Eurasian Economic Community? [100]

I am the first to admit that I am not an expert on the history of Yugoslavia
Crow has been very kind to explain some of the history to me

It is very complicated. In the west, the Serbs are generally portrayed as being the bad guys with the Chetniks being the worst of the worst

The history is interesting and Crow has encouraged me to read more about it

Ukrainians and Belarussians were Orthodox and if they spoke Polish it was not their first language

perhaps they thought they might receive better treatment in the States if they 'marketed' themselves as being Polish

in the same way a lot of Americans will really play up their Irish heritage when visiting the old country

just a thought...
