Ok, so I gather it's still terrible there...

it's not terrible at the moment - but the prospects are actually gloomy - even if most people are not aware of that (it then will just take'em by surprise)

Work / Price per day... private painting and decorating in Poland [23]

There is also little choice with colour ranges for gloss paints and again no undercoats ( no colours ).

well I am not an expert but from what I gather there is no such thing as real gloss paint in Poland (or maybe I have missed out on a couple of things)

Real Estate / Introduction and help w/employment opportunities and Polish housing prices etc. [11]

I have contemplated starting my own business in Poland, as this is how ive worked in the past. Could anyone tell me how long it may take to start my own business and are there any cost implications.

after you learn some Polish and attract the right Polish business partners you can probably become a successful representative of bigger Western businesses in your field

News / "Poland is flourishing" [62]

I would like to find out how accurately it describes, in your opinion, the current situation in Poland, the good things and the bad things.

I haven't read the article yet - but I think from the choice of the 'flourishing' title thats it pretty delusional

edit: an excerpt from the article: Yet Poland must raise its game to regain its rightful place at Europe’s top table. That must start with the economy, which despite a good recent run still exhibits ominous weaknesses.

Life / Realistic grocery budget for a family of three in Warsaw? [20]

It is posh performance shopping in the style of a superstar, with TV cameras around you etc, in the most expensive stores/shops in the area.

why do you need to spill such bullshit around

as for grocery budget - I used to live for less than 200 zł a month 4-6 years ago and it was a rather healthy diet with quite a lot of fruit and vegs - still I was not buying meat that much

History / Poland Lithuania - current relations [124]

Komorowski is a recent addition to the highest circles. Stupid policies? ROTFL

of course he meant euro-zone - and Tusk once sprang up with a plan to join the eruo-zone as soon as possible - firstly Poland was not ready in terms of inflation rate and other economic factors - then the slowdown came - and it is believed own currency saved a lot businesses in Poland and helped economic growth - countries which recently adopted euro or were in the process suffered badly (Slovakia, Lithuania, Latvia) - if Poland made a decision to join euro-zone back then we would need to wait 3 years with a next to stiff exchange rate euro-to-zloty which could prove very harmful - there is also a very difficult decision to make which rate of official euro-to-zloty exchange rate to aim for (there is a difficult balance - and Poland and Eurozone have antagonistic interests in that matter)

I am a lay person in those econimic matters so I'm writing from my best understanding - hope it makes sense

Travel / Driving to Krakow - which route to take from the Tri-Cities? [10]

Nojas

I would go for Autobahns if I were you - if you happen upon some road works in Poland (which is quite probable) you will sit in a queue for an hour or more - stau (German term( (traffic jam) on an Autobahn can be equally painful but appart from heavy traffic on specific days (you probably best avoid Mondays and Fridays) which results in slower than usual traffic, Autobahns are only clogged in case of an accident

Travel / Driving to Krakow - which route to take from the Tri-Cities? [10]

the fastest and safest way would be to go through Germany using their autobahns and then joining the Berlin-Wrocław highway (it may not be complete yet - I don't know that for sure - but should already have one decent lane) - then you join A4 highway which should drive you all the way to Kraków without major disruptions

so you start in Swinoujście - head towards Szczecin - join A6 in Poland - you cross to Germany and drive their 11 autobahn - drive around Berlin heading to their 15 autobahn which leads to Cottbus and Polish border - the 71km section (A18) from the border to A4 is not a complete motorway (as I have mentioned above) so you can expect a two-way traffic on the new-built lane at times - A4 should take you smoothly to Kraków - surprisingly enough there are even some places to dine and rest along A4

maybe it is not actually the fastest route - but to my mind it is the most convenient - you don't get tired as much when you drive mostly motorways/highways

Lietuva lietuviams.

that actually speaks for itself - if you exclaimed Polska dla Polaków in Poland you would be instantly deemed xenophobic nationalist (or worse)

Life / How could things have gone so wrong (Poland church dress code) [195]

Going to God’s house IS important.

God is everywhere - the only reason why Jesus encouraged people to meet up was for the sake of coming together (in God's unity) - are those bad looks at people who are dressed differently what Jesus would preach? is it a true Christian way?

Sunday is special, God’s House is special.

I don't think they are in most thinkable respects

Church territory-church rules

what rules? - have you seen them codified? - 'church' rules?? - was it church to impose them?- what is wrong in wearing shorts for a church service?- I don't get it

yes - dress code is stupid - and that is anywhere not only in church - the only areas I think dress code makes sense is military and the like

If you want to speak Polish - go back to Poland

just a petty nationalist who knows little history that's what you are - the people you are talking about never moved into Lithuania (like 95 per cent) - their parents, grandparents and grand grandparents were born in those lands

Anyone wishing to live there should learn that country's language rather than insist on imposing one's own.

are you implying Polish people in Lithuania impose anything on Lithuanians? - interesting - just shows you know next to nothing about the issue

btw being proud of one's national background makes as much sense as being proud one has a bottom to sit on

UK, Ireland / Do Poles and EU Citizens exploit the British welfare state [129]

Bzibzioh:
And she was right to close those coal mines; they were bleeding money and they needed to be closed.

Actually, some of them were profitable and yet closed as part of a political agenda.

this is what I figured from various distant sources too - and I wasn't even vaguely researching the topic

News / Poland's Lost Generation [172]

There is no reason why wage increases should outstrip inflation - the rationale for wage increases should be increased productivity

I don't question any rationales behind pay increases - I just point things out that contradict your soaring optimism - then again if pay increases are not higher than the inflation people are not getting richer but quite the contrary - if average pay rise equals inflation there's really no point of being overly optimistic

btw cms do you have to read something in Gazeta Wyborcza to believe or even make you wonder - if so there is a suitable link for you.

Lots of food prices actually fell last year

name these - do you mean like olives? - I mean those like potatoes. there is also alarm raised of growing consumer debt (with growing percentage of 'bad credit') - not much optimistic either

I have to admit that I don't know the facts - but - are Poles in Lithuania enjoying the same liberties as Lithuanians in Poland (there is a small are north of Suwałki with Lithuanian majority)

pawian:
Lithuanian elites prefered to turn Polish in the past

It's 21 first century btw.. and Lithuanians are surprise surprise...Lithuanians. I know, shocking...

during the firts half of the 20th century (and also before a bit) Lithuanians did a lot to get rid of Polish influence on their culture and language (this was called Lithuanian national revival) they also forcibly Lithuanized a sizeable Polish minority in pre-war Lithuania (polonia laudańska) - there was serious anti-Polishness among Lithuanian elites in the first half of the 20th century - I come to think it is still lingering here and there

pawian:
On the other hand, they are trying to diminish the Polish influence in/on their country because they fear another Polish cultural colonization. That is why they are refusing to acknowledge the rights of Polish minority etc etc

hmm in my ears you sound rather patronizing towards Lithuanians suggesting some sort of inexplicable void in their culture that above all needed filling with… ‘Polishness’

you sound patronizing to Kaczyńskis on the other hand, what's the difference - btw he is not patronising at all - you need to think less (or read more) sometimes cause you get strange conclusions

Provided the tax revenues are spent for the benefit of the general public, which clearly works elsewhere, what's wrong with that?

you seem not to understand the matter - have you heard about any tax lowered in the said period?? and especially one that could lower general tax income of the country by 10 per cent? - and then ( a completely separate matter) what is the point of lowering taxes when it directly causes massive growth of state debt - so no - lowering taxes is not always the best possible thing or even a responsible thing to do

and btw FP you probably don't live in Poland - so you don't care that much this country can go bankrupt

next nota bene - what do you think about the recent ZUS reform? was it a right thing to do??

like having over 10 per cent drop in taxes collected while having a positive economic growth? (I am not 100 per cent sure but it was between 2009 and 2010)

and then being surprised by the speed Polish debt grows? and perhaps in a few years being surprised by being as bankrupt as Argentina, Greece or even more - is that what you call nicer surprises? Ho Ho Ho ?

I am pretty surprised people (especially Polish) use such forums to spread unsubstantiated private political biases and then are surprised those oppositely biased make their views clear

and the respectful language - gotta love it

btw I am curious what is your social background FP - don't you perhaps come from a village yourself - I do if you ask - you can feel as much superior as you wish
