News / Poland to join anti-ISIS coalition [22]

A heightened risk of terrorism, more danger for Poles abroad in tourist resorts and not much else.

Joining an anti-ISIS coalition in exchange for a substantial and permanent NATO base somewhere east of Łodź, I could perhaps understand. But joining it based on SLD-era 'let's cuddle up to the Yanks in exchange for...nothing' is madness.

Fantastic. Macierewicz seems hell bent on bringing war to Poland one way or another.

And to make matters worse, our counter-terrorism skills are woeful compared to Germany or the UK.

News / PiS to impose blanket retail tax in Poland [291]

And foreign banks and corporations and other biggies holding Poland by the throat in concert with the EU who have strait-jacketed Poland's economy -- that seems to be your theme song.

You don't seem to get it, do you? These companies are not going to lose - they're big and strong enough to simply force savings with suppliers to cover the costs of the tax. It's the small Polish companies that lose out, because they haven't got the strength to negotiate. That's why retailers and suppliers in Poland are coming out against the retail tax, because they know that they're the ones going to lose badly with this tax. In fact, the general opinion is that the tax is a huge gift to the large foreign chains.

If the tax is raised, suppliers will raise prices and these will get passed on bla-bla-bla ad nauseum -- seems to be your sole line of reasoning.

It is exactly what will happen. Combine it with the way that franchises are being taxed as if they were all owned by one company, and you've got a recipe for economic disaster. If Morawiecki is against it, doesn't it mean that something is quite wrong with it?

Why is it that trmming overhead never crosses your mind? You seem to be constantly shedding tears over the "poor" foreign corperoaitons.

That's exactly what the large boys will do. They'll stop paying so much (most of the supermarkets pay more than minimum wage), they'll trim expenses by demanding bigger discounts from suppliers and so on. Trimming overheads is exactly what they're going to do, and it's Poles that will suffer as a result.

Couldn't their filthy rich CEOs and board members stand to shave off some of their indecent earnings and drive a big Opel (if they need that bigness to prop up their egos) than a big BMW?

Try being one of them for a day, knowing that the big bosses elsewhere are constantly breathing down your neck for greater and greater results. There's a reason why they earn high salaries, because they deliver high results.

There are many other ways to economise besides lowerng employee wages like moving a warehouse to lower-rent premises and using smaller light bulbs.

Smaller lightbulbs reminds me of that dreadful Carrefour in the basement of some centre in Warsaw. I don't remember where it was exactly, but it was close to the first McDonalds. Horrible, horrible place.

News / Demonstrations in Poland in defence of democracy. [2554]

Ever sensitive to the needs of society, the pro-Polish PiS govt has scrubbed plans to eliminate middle schools.

Polonius, do you have a link to this? The kids in school will be delighted - a lot of the older ones were furious at the thought of having to spend another 2-3 years with younger kids.

PiS were facing an all-out strike by both Solidarność and the ZNP, so I'm not surprised that they backed off. It was one of the few times that the two main unions were completely in agreement.

Also as regards the retail tax, modfications are planned to lessen the tax burden on retailers.

We'll see what happens. Again, PiS are facing the prospect of a huge strike in the retail sector if they keep on with the current plans.

Yet more evidence that PiS are in sync with the needs and sentiments of the Polish nation.

Seems to me as if they're already backing down on many issues.

It gets even better. The latest suggestion is that foreign supermarkets might find gains in negotiating lower rents. Our pension funds tend to invest in owners of such properties, as it provides a steady long term income. Who loses? We do.

That's because so called "Polish government" of Tusk didn't give a damn about air crash that killed dozens of VIPs including the head of state.

No, they only got the military prosecutor to conduct a wide and far ranging investigation while also conducting a civilian investigation.

More to the point, they had real experts working on it, unlike the joke of the Macierewicz commision with over 100+ members receiving 25k monthly despite not a single one of them being experts in aviation.

Law / Business in Poland and Polish reality, How are you doing in Poland? [82]

Exactly there is another factor as you said such as very long summer holidays, in Poland kids have time off from late June till 1st of September!

Well, speaking from personal experience - one huge advantage of organising such trips as the director of the trip is that you can bring a child along. I've got the course as well, and it's pretty much a given that anyone working as a director of summer camps will take their own kids, though the teachers on such camps will do the actual caring. It should be possible with the right amount of effort to put together a programme for the bus in the summer months and keep it moving constantly.

My question here is - is that done so someone naive can take a job, sign a contract and lose money on it?

It's normal to try and lowball here, but don't fall for it. It's just the way they do business - you'll see the same nonsense with people offering ridiculously low rates that they can't possibly manage. I remember setting up one project for a webdesign a few years ago, and the lowest offer was easily 50% lower than I budgeted for. What made it amusing was that I structured the contract in such a way that they only got paid after each milestone, so when they realised halfway through that it was costing them a lot more than they expected, I still had a half finished project for a very low price. I think on the whole thing, I ended up paying around 30% less than expected, which wasn't bad for what it was.

For a two day bus trip with some small viatoll costs (not much, in the region of 30-40zł) for 400-500km, including overnight stay - I'm paying between 1600zł-2000zł brutto here in Poznań. That's normally leaving at 4-5am and returning at around 9-10pm the next night, with some small trips at the destination. The highest I've paid was 2400zł, but that was on the very high side and was a last minute thing.

so it's easy to calculate that they want to spend almost 0.98PLN per km

No chance. Fuel has gone down, but you can't bet on it staying at this price.

Try these links to get an idea of what others are charging.

sindbad.pl/artykul/wynajem-autokarow
madel.com.pl/index.php?page=cennik
linieautokarowe.pl/page_cennik_transport.html

It's probably worth pointing out that if it's for such a contract, they're looking for a company with an old wreck of a bus that will simply get kids from point A to point B - they won't be looking for something newer and in very good condition.

Do you know on how to sort out a school contract?

Usually these things are done by tender through the local gmina - look for (name of gmina) BIP on Google and you should find these things.

Essentially, I think you'd be best to move into operating the bus as part of a package. Get the nightclub runs sorted out - say Friday night to Kraków through Trzebinia/Krzeszkowice and Saturday night to Katowice through Oświęcim/Pszczyna/Tychy/Mikółow and do a deal with a good club so that they'll pay you something for bringing customers straight to them. Organise Saturday daytime trips for kids to Katowice/Kraków picking up in small towns along the way (get in touch with schools to promote it), and perhaps get involved with churches so that you can organise Sunday trips to important places of worship in the region. Trips to Jasna Góra should always work, for instance.

I would suggest that if school runs prove problematic, the best bet will be to bite the bullet and operate a passenger service. There's a lot of places that aren't very well connected in Poland - for instance, you could try operating a service from Chrzanów to that huge shopping centre in Gliwice (I've forgotten the name...) - it would be a straight run along the A4, so it shouldn't be too hard on the bus.

Life / What is meant by 'dochody' (monthly earnings per child) in Poland - are they GROSS or NET? [8]

Why not giving (more) money to people who really need it?

I don't understand it in the slightest. It's obvious that wealthy families will see it as a way of paying golf fees or for contributing towards private school fees, while those that really need it will do without. Furthermore, the law is so flawed that families that have a 19 year old still in school along with a 15 year old will get nothing.

May I remind you that PiS went to the United States Senate to beg for their intervention in Polish affairs post-Smoleńsk?

Law / Business in Poland and Polish reality, How are you doing in Poland? [82]

Okay, first things first - and I know something about this line of business as I know a guy that owns such a company.

Our customers are usually schools

As far as I can tell you, most small local companies have regular school runs that pay for the bus during the day. Your profit is in the 'extra' runs during the day - so you need to be more aggressive with this. You should look at organising camps during winter holidays (when schools are closed) as well as during summer. The course is a piece of cake - kierownikkolonii.pl/ - and this gives you the full right to organise trips registered with the local Kuratorium.

That takes care of the holiday downtime, so you then need to move into other organised trips. Weekend ski trips to Slovakian ski resorts are always a good idea, but it depends on where you're actually located. Wedding transport is a waste of time - it ties down the bus in the middle of the day when it can be used for more productive purposes. Get into organising trips through schools on Saturdays to popular attractions - if you can take care of all the bureaucracy, tickets and so on, they're more likely to cooperate.

That still leaves the problem of the bus in the evenings. I don't know if it's the same where you are, but in Wielkopolska, there are several huge clubs in small villages. Get something organised like this - a party bus going to one such club, with pickups on the way. Organise it properly - you should have a party host, free shots and so on. That can be on Friday and Saturday nights - so you've now got the bus running from Friday afternoon straight through to Sunday morning almost constantly.

I don't know anything about regular passenger transport, but you might find that the bus can at least provide a small income by operating in this way between school runs. Check it out - it might be a way to keep the wheels turning.

Moving on, if you can't pick up a school contract, get yourself involved in organising church trips if you're in a rural area. Organise pilgrimages to places such as Medjugorje - for instance, the bus could leave Sunday morning and arrive back on Friday afternoon in time for the weekend. Medjugorje is about a 16-18 hour run allowing for breaks, so you could leave Sunday midday, arrive Monday morning, spend till Thursday there and take the pilgrims back after dinner on Thursday, arriving back Friday afternoon and in time for your weekend plans.

From your location, you're near Katowice - which means there's a massive amount of untapped potential there. The Friday/Saturday night runs to clubs in places such as Kraków should go down very well if you organise it correctly!

Sadly any 'compromise' would be illegal and unconstitutional.

Which is why it's highly unlikely that the Venice Commission are going to suggest anything unconstitutional.

The best thing about this whole mess is that if PiS simply followed the law and left the TK alone, 99% of their plans would go through anyway. But instead, they've chosen to make a mockery out of Poland while the world is watching.

News / PiS to impose blanket retail tax in Poland [291]

Today Polish producers provide more than 95 percent of the goods on Biedronka's shelves.

Good for who, Polonius? I'm sure the PiS appointed puppets in endless state jobs where they earn ridiculous salaries for doing nothing (like those in Macierewicz's commission who are getting 25k a month!) won't mind paying a bit extra, but for the ordinary Pole, they aren't so privileged.

The main thing is that what are known as mom & pop shops will get preferential boost.

They won't. They're already protesting, because if suppliers are forced to cut their margins to supply the supermarkets, it means they're going to increase their margins to the wholesalers and small local shops.

If Poland is so desperate for money, it can tell the RCC to pay tax like everybody else does.

Indeed. Make them pay tax and cut religion in schools and that's a huge amount of extra revenue.

It's worth pointing out that government forecasts have the retail tax earning 2 billion złoty this year. We pay 1.3 billion to the RCC to provide religion in schools.

That brainwashing was the result of the PO-Petru hate industry hoopla turning over at 5 million rpm day in, day out, 24/7.

Making excuses again. The facts are clear : the majority think the government is in the wrong.

Run to Google Translate and read:

Who needs Google Translate here? Of course he is saying that the Venice Commission is on their side, it's the normal PiS thing to claim that people said something totally different to what they actually said, relying on the fact that most PiS supporters simply believe whatever the Party tells them.

Nice spin, but the reality is that they've said nothing of the sort.

You've also failed to mention that 46% of Poles support KOD against the government, with only 42% in favour of the government.

Why would I drink such a thing when I can buy quality alcohol that's actually enjoyable to drink? If I want to destroy my insides, I can buy 96% alcohol in Poland from the supermarket.

No, you sip it if you are doing it straight up and that is the 70% stuff.

No way, from experience, the only way is to down a shot of it. Sipping it is a waste of time, you just end up tasting much more of it, and it's really not to be tasted.

News / PiS to impose blanket retail tax in Poland [291]

The problem is that those that are part of a network, such as Żabka, will be forced to pay on the basis of the turnover of the entire network, not just their individual shop. The end result is that the biggest retailers such as Tesco and Auchan will force their suppliers to accept less, while the smaller shops (with no negotiation power) will simply have to close.

Law / Am I eligible to apply for Poland's Dowod Osobisty? I am British. [11]

Nope. The only form of acceptable identification is the passport in your case.

After 5 years of being resident in Poland, you can apply for confirmation of your permanent residency, which provides this -

- but you must legally be resident, which means having a zameldowanie and the certificate of residence as an EU citizen.

After 7 years, you can apply for Polish citizenship provided you meet the requirements, including at least a B1 pass in Polish.

News / Poland's TVP revolution [10]

Watching TVP and TVP info these days, I honestly don't see any particularly biased narrative

You don't see it because you're not looking for it. The blatant way that TVP ignored the downgrading of Poland's credit rating was a great example, but there are many more in a daily basis.

Lis also earnt a huge amount of money for TVP in advertising fees, which more than paid for his salary. TVP lost those advertising contracts when Lis left.

last and even Robert Janowski, the seemingly innocent presenter of 'Jaka to Melodia?'

Why are you so surprised? They bring in huge money in advertising, hence they command high salaries.

Most debates on TVP info have people from all sides of the political and social spectrum in them.

...as they did before the election.
