History / Lwów, Wilno ... kresy - Poland have lost enormoust part of our heritage... [389]

Nah, Scottish (father) and Scottish/Irish (mother).

I think there was evidence of his early writings having been in Polish. This would have been encouraged as he was born into Torun just 7 years after the transition from Thorn.

Ach, they have to take the bad with the good, They don't seem to be able to do that.

I moved to Poland but speak and write in Polish? So? ;) ;) Copernicus didn't only write in Polish but he is considered to have been Polish.

Chauvinism? Possibly!

Well, you know the history better than I do but wasn't it just a stopgap measure on a temporary basis? I thought that it was a short-term, strategic move.

Polonia / Polish people in New Delhi [86]

My tour guide was in India. She said that many of her tourists spend a lot of the time on the toilet after sampling local curries :)

The Albos managed to destroy Serbia's Jerusalem so anything is possible when tensions rise.

Wasn't it Mickiewicz himself who wrote 'my beloved Lithuania'? I seem to recall that on the Pan Tadeusz bottle :) Why would they claim they are Lithuanian, Sok? Just think about that.

For sure but Piłsudski was still respected for his heroic stance against the Russians.

Food / The 12 dishes of Poland on Christmas Eve. [51]

That's a good question, PennBoy. I don't really know, tbh.

WB, gravy really makes the dish as you know. That should go down a treat. No offence to the Poles but carp and turkey with Bisto/stuffing just don't compare. I like the little pierogi, though.

Life / Gypies/Indian-looking women with kids beg for money in Poland [143]

Back to the thread, I've seen the cygany (gypsies) do their rounds. The thing is, many tend to have enough for their needs but they are greedy. It is not Polish peoples' problem that they breed like rabbits. Besides, they sometimes try and pick a fight with the locals. Why should they be respected?

Lovely jubbly! Will the missus insist on some stuffing with the turkey? ;) Do you have Bisto up there in Wrocław? Buttery mash and crisp green peas, brilliant! What's your pick of the bunch for the 12 Polish dishes?

I-S, let's say that Vilnius was a part of Poland at the moment. You'd still have to travel there anyway if you were from, let's say, Poznań. Besides, they did preserve a lot of Polish elements. Have you been there? I was there in Aug 2009 and they really honour Mickiewicz and Słowacki. Had I looked closer, I dare say that Piłsudski would have gotten a mention. In fact, I think he did at the cemetery I was at. All 3 Poles had a healthy appreciation and respect for Lithuania and Lithuanians have taken stock of that and tributed them admirably. Don't let the current feud blight your sense of perspective on historical aspects.

So, would you be prepared to give all those Jewish families their property back and displace Poles who acquired the new title deeds? Where do you stand on Kosovo? Funny that Poland officially recognised the swiping of Serbian property to give to Albanians. They were forced to hand across their papers.

History, aha. History is also 5 mins ago and I saw borders and new owners ;) ;)

History / Lwów, Wilno ... kresy - Poland have lost enormoust part of our heritage... [389]

How am I wrong? Are you really telling me that the core of what Poles regard as their heritage is trapped now in the Ukraine and Lithuania? Part of it, yes. The core??

Oh, only academics writing books while the EU turns a blind eye, I-S :( May I ask you, where is the enforcement from the Polish side? If you clearly see discrimination, as I do too I might add, then where is the concerted action to combat it?

Because you have an interest or influence in a place, doesn't make it yours. No more so is this the case than in our current climate of globalisation. We all invest in the global village in one way or another but the core of Polish heritage hasn't been lost when it comes to Lviv or Vilnius. Lithuania is in the EU and freely accessible to those with the desire to go.

Travel / Katowice airport situation? [10]

Good point, frd. My wife flew to Sharm Al Sheikh just last Thursday from Pyrzowice and back on Sat. She had no problems. The biggest concern is timing for yourself, Adam. My friend reserved his tickets to go back to Edinburgh some time ago and he was lucky that they ok'd it on the 18th when he was due to fly out on the 19th. It can hang on a thread, it really can.

Which is dubious although the temp has gone up to +2/+3 so the snow may thaw somewhat overnight, albeit partially. I'm talking about the temp here in Gliwice which is near Pyrzowice.

Life / Is Poland a place of high culture? [36]

What I like about Polish culture is that it is easier to define than Western countries which have been heavily shaped by too many influences. Polish culture is pretty impressive when you find some time away from the rat race.

News / US Military: The Army of Poland is crap. [124]

Well, there are things to criticise for sure but that's not why NATO moved in. If they really wanted to remove bad guys from the world, or so-called bad guys, then why did Kim Jong-Il last for so long in power? Their motives are so transparent.

And for what reason? Serving their country's national interest? Rescuing anyone? Reducing global terror? Why are they there?

News / US Military: The Army of Poland is crap. [124]

Very true. Which brings us back to Polish soldiers. Are they doing this for the good of their health? Where is the appreciation rather than the criticism? Upon what are they being judged?

Life / Is Poland a place of high culture? [36]

I'm showing elements of Poland not being a high culture but there are elements where it is. Just go to Kraków and see the architecture and fine arts there. Many Polish cities have strong elements of high culture. Torun springs to mind.
