Off-Topic / Übertough Pole with bullet in his head [16]

Man...has someone researched these phenomena already? Is there a scientific name for not spotting bullets, teeths or knifes in their own body???

News / Anger after Poland left out of EU ambassador team [38]

Hmm...point may be that Poland is not known for taking up diplomatic responsibilities across the EU or elsewhere.
There is non-EU Ukraine where Poland is seemingly more involved but else?.

But would you really choose a Pole as EU-ambassador in Russia for example? Where is the experience? Where is Poland involved as negotiator or otherwise?

You can't demand such posts just because you are Pole!

But still...it seems abit unfair...I will look for more info....

History / Pole who burned himself to protest the 1968 Soviet invasion [81]

Similiar to the Prussian virtue: "Mehr sein als schein" (Be more than you appear to be)...
Similiar but not the same!

As you can for sure be better than others and actually strife to be but you shouldn't flaunt it.

History / WW2 hypothesis - if France And England weren't so timid, wimpy and scared of Hitler... [34]

The Blitzkreig was pioneered in Spain.

Well...all have slept then and not seen what happened! ;)
It's quite hard to develop and implement the Blitzkrieg with such a quite tiny unit (100 aircraft, about 5000 men)
The Italians for example had many more stuff there...

Hitler and others supported one fraction of the spanish civil war the left, communist and Stalin the other...it was a proxy war. That's about it...

Who knows...a less agressive Hitler might have had some more proxy wars across Europe with Stalin if he hadn't decided to take it directly to Moscow in 1941.

History / WW2 hypothesis - if France And England weren't so timid, wimpy and scared of Hitler... [34]

Most people in the Republic weren'y commies - in fact the commies made an arse of it.

Well...in my commie school the spanish civil war was a big thing...the international red brigades build up in all over the world and paid for by Stalin's Moscow to fight for them was especially glorified.

Spain was the first big proxy war between the conservatives and the communists...The commies lost.

Most people in the Republic weren't commies

Exactly!
They had no interest in becoming a puppet of Moscow either...

No condor legion in Spain - no blitz tactics - no lebensraum

Huh?

The legion condor was Luftwaffe...this chain of events is really farfetched! ;)

History / WW2 hypothesis - if France And England weren't so timid, wimpy and scared of Hitler... [34]

There's a lot of other things and people that Hitler nudged in the right direction, without him Germany would fall on its face somewhere on the road to get vengence much ealier.

That would be a probability too...

After all smaller countries had to live with injustice too and could do nothing about it.
And seeing now with hindsight the big picture the whole revenge thingy had cost us more then before.
But people couldn't know that back then...

History / WW2 hypothesis - if France And England weren't so timid, wimpy and scared of Hitler... [34]

If he was stopped then WW2 would not have happened.

Okay... when and where...oh and how?

Sometimes it's really enough to chip away the head of the snake. But if this snake is a symptom and nourished from still unresolved tensions and problems then the next head is just waiting to grow back into place I fear...

History / WW2 hypothesis - if France And England weren't so timid, wimpy and scared of Hitler... [34]

the official version was that Versailles was unfair,

Nope Sok, there wasn't an "official version".
Hitler was a child of Versailles, he decided to fight against the injustice that this treaty was the moment he heard about it...he rose to power on the widespread grievances about Versailles...the Weimar Republic to weak and not helped by the victors to strenghten it's position. (Quite the contrary...especially France not slackening in their demands hence making the democratic government unbearable to many Germans)

Easy prey for determined "revengist".

History / Pole who burned himself to protest the 1968 Soviet invasion [81]

Apropos...has someone seen the movie "Surrogates" with Bruce Willis?
People can use good looking robos for all things..they are directing them from their couch at home (more or less). For work, for fun, for sex....not leaving their homes anymore at all...and if you are bored with your looks you can just order a new one...no plastic surgery needed....

Okay...off to random with me....;)

Ack...he wouldn't lie about such a thing!

About half of my body was covered with burnwounds. It's a long story of how that came to be, and I don't want to tell that, but I had to run through tens of metres of fire.

Oh weh...sorry to hear that..I'm glad you made it...

Genealogy / Polish person's average height? [210]

eeeehmmm, so you compared young ppl from other countries with Swedish older-man?

It is not cool to post misleading statistics, it's called: "You have failed"

Yeah...you are correct of course...swedish men are known for whithering away from their average height later in life....they get tiny! One has to look down if looking for an older man.

How could I forget that!!! *slaps forehead* And as everybody can see Swedes are so NOT "definitely taller" than Norwegian, Danish, Finnish or "of course" Germans.

Older or younger...

When it comes to drawing attention to your cause , burning yourself is very very effective..

Hmmm...it's nothing I could claim knowing the whole truth about but we all know that the public generally has the attention span of a fruit fly.

Already the next day something else makes the headlines...and the further away the public is the quicker they forget.

I doubt that the brave people who gave the highest what they could, they own lives, did alot to help their case.
As there is hard and dirty and dangerous groundwork needed for years and years, not the big but short time shows.
The soviet empire didn't fall because of the few people who burnt themselves....and that the west (if he did care) was sympathetic to their cause didn't help the people behind the iron curtain one yota...

Moscow didn't care and Washington could do nothing...so what was achieved?

Am I a cynic now?

Like the czech priest said in the article

"[His death] was a symbol, it was an offering for freedom."

I don't agree with that...after all he removed himself from the struggle for freedom.
One enemy less to watch for the NKVD.

But I can't even fathom what it needs to decide to burn one self to death...the most excruciating painful death I think. Should I respect him for that? I can't help it but I do...

News / Poland's elite more pro-US than society? [29]

If the US role in Poland is shrinking, then whose is expanding? Germany's? The EU's? Russia's? Israel's? China's? Somebody else's?

The EU's role of course.

In another 20 years Poland will be even more connected and immersed with the other memberstates.
Also in 20 years Poland will (hopefully) having grown out of the developing phase and fully taken over responsibilities as one of the more active core countries, that also furthers commitment.

Should there really happen a groundbreaking event like a split between the north and the south, Poland will be part of the northern EU. Even more tight.

The US will have to fight with their own problems in the mean time, not being able nor willing to spend so much energy on other continents. They will be glad if the EU is still an ally (as we should be).

News / Newsweek's The World's Best Countries (Poland ranked 29) [128]

Average Joe in US can afford to eat 3 big mac meals aday, average Pawel cannot afford one big mac meals a week. Yes, I've been to Poland and I know how poor the people are (no offense there).

PS: Having to eat 3 big macs and being fat are no signs of health or wealth....often quite the contrary...Fatties often just can't afford the more healthier but also more expensive fruits and veggies.

Yeah...you should really watch "Oversized me"...it's an eye opener to the fast food society.
