UK, Ireland / Poles revealed to harbour deep hatred against Anglos when they speak in their own language [62]

I have yet to ANYONE who regrets i

Actually I know people who say

Seems like you don't follow current affairs too closely.

The teenagers are no surprise they are a reflection of their failed parents, nationality irrelevant, sheit is sheit

Agreed.

agree that article 50 should be signed asap

A lot of legal arguments and political discussion about whether or not they actually can trigger that at all, and even if they can, on what basis.

Travel / £1 - 4.73 Polish Zloty [7]

On the 1000 pounds salary it is 1000 zloty loss each month.

Yes. It will affect a lot of families here who depend on someone sending back as much of their wage as they can.

Would parliament dare vote against Brexit? _Before_ an election?

Probably afterwards.

anything done unilaterally by the UK to stay in the EU would be a slap in the face of the electorate

No. The vote was close, the terms of any exit were not set out and Britain is a parliamentary democracy. There's also the issue of who could/couldn't vote as well as a clear will in Scotland/NI to remain.

It also looks like many of the people who voted for Brexit now regret it.

UK, Ireland / Why English do not like Polish? [417]

Every assault is a hate crime.

Don't be so daft Ironside. That comment is stupid and bizarre even by your 'standards'.

Oh?! Tell us more about females in Poland. What if they went to England with their parents about six, nine or ten years ago, in their teen years or as children. Not possible? Seems likely.

There you go again, deliberately getting the wrong end of the stick.

Fortunately Agnieszka and Angelika Mut have been convicted, and frankly got off very likely.

UK, Ireland / How might Britain`s withdrawal from EU affect Poles there and here? [474]

We don't actually know anything about the religious affiliations of any of those concerned, nor do we know the skin colour of the victims. Don't jump to conclusions.

Good that the perpetrators were punished though; hate crime must never be ignored.

if the english hate the polish

Most don't. The same sort of people who are xenophobic there are the same sort of people who are xenophobic here in Poland. Haters will hate, that's hard to stop.

UK, Ireland / Why English do not like Polish? [417]

Poland has got more than million immigrants in a relatively short time.

No, I-S, Britain got a million Poles in a short time. If a million people came from one far away country to Poland there would be blood on the streets.

I would say that could be a result of acculturation, females in Poland rarely behave in such a manner.

Rubbish. It was a hate crime and your view of young women in Poland is very out of touch - when did you last life here? 20 or 30 years ago.

Travel / New Year's Eve 2017 in Poland [5]

For parties,I suppose you'd need to know the host - not sure someone would mention their party on YouTube, that could risk gatecrashers.

There are plenty of commercial things though however you'll need to reserve early rather than on the night. Most of the big Warsaw nightclubs have websites (though to me the music is all electronic; very few live bands).

If you want live bands, there's always a big outdoor event in the city centre.

parties

You mean actual parties or nightclubs that charge money? Or a traditional Polish Bal Sylwestrowy?

UK, Ireland / Why English do not like Polish? [417]

Looks like it can go both ways:

Polish sisters brand their victims "English sl*t b*****s" before throttling one with a handbag strap in savage racist attack

To be fair, a lot of the Poles who get the most criticism in the U.K. for not engaging in the community, generally scuzzy behaviour etc aren't the people that Poland would choose to be their ambassadors. Basically younger people with less education, a lower sense of community in general and little sophistication. Not all are like that - huge numbers aren't, but the people who stand out are the ones that get noticed.

Life / Average Food Bill in Poland - Family of 4 [7]

400 pln works

I agree with that as a base figure. It's possible to spend less (many have to) and it's possible to spend much more. It all depends on how many basics you buy and how many extras.

I would guess that our two person household spends around 400zl max. per week. For that price we don't buy much processed food (we make our own bread and cheese, don't buy cakes, biscuits or much ready made) but we do buy good coffee beans and some alcohol which drives the bill up. We also eat out sometimes which keeps the bill lower.

If you entertain guests, the costs will be higher.

Travel / Airline tickets from LOT... changing flights. [29]

Maria, have a look at momondo.com and especially have a look at flights via Madrid. Also have a look at the Emirates website - there are sometimes bargains.

Since your grandmother is elderly, always let the airline know, they will often take great care of elderly passengers and sometimes give upgrades. LOT Polish airlines are good at taking care of older people visiting Poland.

Plus, if there's a long layover, think about paying for a lounge. They're usually about $50 and are really worth it on a long journey.

I wish you good luck finding a flight.

Just a quickly Maria, if you use momondo, play about with the possibilities, routes etc. Also don't just look at return flights, look at two separate one way flights. I have to fly a lot and have had some good bargains here.

Also have a look at this. I've never used it myself so can't either recommend it or not recommend it however I've heard it's good and people I trust have used it. These are people who work for airlines, travel agents etc who help people find the very best and cheapest routes for a small fee: flightfox.com/about

Genealogy / The village of Surazkowo in Poland (Chomczyk, Czaban, Sawicki) [20]

Gorton

There's a Gorton in Manchester, UK. Is that the place you mean? I know it well. Famous for two former residents called Ian and Myra, a pair I'm glad to have never met. Otherwise, it's a once pleasant housing project which is going to the dogs a bit.

About Surazkowo, I'll be near there very soon. If you want, I can take some photos and post them - might be worth a look
