Life / Warnings about stuff sold in Poland and EU [6]

Poland introduces ban on Czech alcohol!

Czechs retaliate saying that contaminated alcohol might come from Poland. !!!

"I treat these media reports as rumor . So far there is no indication that the source of the alcohol was in Poland. On the other hand you have to remember that we border with the Czech Republic . So there is a lot of probability that some methylated spirits - hopefully small - went to the Polish - said the Chief of Police spokesman Mariusz Sokolowski ."

They cut all their staff in April and relocated their production factory to the UK. So, maybe the staff left a little present in their last batches of produce!!!

Oh, I see.

23 deadly poisoned victims in Czechia!

12 fight for life!

Situation out of control!

Czech authorities helpless!

Police in Poland have not yet managed to find the main perpetrators of this tragedy . Stopped so-called " hurdles " . This person conducting mixing alcohol and engaged in its distribution.

Charges were brought against 23 suspects so far about the illegal trade in alcohol. The government at the next meeting will think about how to limit the prohibition and authorize the sale of so-called . secure spirits.

French stores are withdrawing lasagne ready made dishes from shelves after a surprising discovery!

Findus has admitted that it withdrew all its beef lasagne ready meals from supermarkets because they had tested positive for high levels of horsemeat, as the food contamination scandal continues to spread.

Tesco and discount chain Aldi had cleared their shelves of frozen spaghetti bolognese and beef lasagne earlier in the week - pending their own tests - because they were made by Comigel, the French manufacturer that supplied Findus.

Yuk!! Don`t these Western producers have any conscience? Only greed? When I did my best to topple communism and start a new system, I certainly didn`t imagine such frauds in it.

Many a time I was gaping at these lamps (or lamping at these gaps... PL lampić się = gapić się),

:):):):):)

thinking about something else, everything, anything but the lesson...

They bring some kind of complacent atmosphere, don`t they?

In 1980s, when my high school was renovated, they fitted modern fluorescent lamps which gave cold, ominous, threatening light. I hated them.

Today, when I see such lamps in a classroom which they appoint me, I demand another, traditional one.

I think I am going to include it in my contracts.

Language / "bibshite" Is this is an actual polish phrase and if so what does it mean? [25]

Maybe „witaj/witajcie", roughly pronounced "VEE tie/vee TIE che", which mean the same as "vitam" in InWroclaw's first post. Just a thought.

Ziutek, do you suggest that a British teacher writes bibshite when he/she heard VEE tie/vee TIE che"

Do you hold British education at such low esteem? :):):):)

It sounds "pieprzysz" to me. :-)

:):):)

Sorry guys,

I decided to delay my answers here till Sunday morning. Then, usually, mods are still fast asleep after a Saturday night fever binge. At 9 am Polish Grinicz Time you can write what you want and it doesn`t get binned till Sunday noon or even 2 pm!. :):):):):):):):):):):):):)

Oh dear Polonius... can't you at least find a slightly more credible newspaper than that?

:):):):)
Funny, indeed.

PiS down to 26%? It's going from bad to worse for them - they need at least 40% in order to have a credible chance of forming a government.

Everything is possible in politics.

Real Estate / Wrocław has some of the highest rents in Poland [7]

If your neighbour betrayed his wife twice while you didn`t, statistics say you betrayed yours at least once.

Conclusion: average prices of flats/houses from the Net may go down substantially when you contact the owner in real life.

Travel / Camping in the Baltic Coast area, too cold? [16]

We are now thinking of some camping in our travels along Baltic Coast . On a previous post it seems that some think it might be a bit too cold. Any thoughts?

A good sleeping bag solves the problem. Come on.

Language / Collection of learning resources for learning the Polish language [129]

can anyone recommend a couple of text books

Don`t be silly and get rid of text books. Take up Polish literature instead:

for reading: sciaga.pl/tekst/4337-5-pan_tadeusz_xiii_ksiega

and listening: zabix.wrzuta.pl/audio/9Ksh02x8pf8/xiii_ksiega_pana_tadeusza_-_w_wykonaniu_daniela_olbrychskiego

Travel / PTTKs (Beskidy Red route) [6]

and stay in mountain PTTKs.

Great idea.

Is it necessary to book ahead?

Nope. They will always accomodate you, even in the kitchen, so in the morning you will have to pack your stuff up to make room for cooks. :):):)

But don`t worry, the time you want to hike isn`t as busy as summer.

Do we need to take bedding?

A sleeping bag and a foam mattress is a must in some shelters. You need to check out beforehand.

Do they serve breakfast(I know they have main meals etc)

If you wish and pay, they do.

UK, Ireland / British - Stupidest nation in Europe [127]

I'll be honest now - i don't know how many pints of blood,

It is due to British education system. Your law allows Brit youth leave school at 16. Most European nations` requirement, including Poland, is 19.

3 years of schooling at this age is a substantial difference.

That is why Polish emigrants come to Great Britain to aid it with their knowledge.

History / The beginning of the Polish state [11]

into a 2003 Polish film called "An Ancient Tale: When the Sun Was a God".

An Ancient Tale: When the Sun Was a God takes place in pre-Christian Poland, when various Slavic tribes lived in lands that would later become the nation of Poland; at a time when each tribe worshipped its own deities. A cruel prince, Popiel, and his scheming wife will do anything in their power to pass control of this land to their son. (According to legend, Popiel will ultimately be eaten by mice.) The commander of Popiel's army, Piastun, opposed to the crimes and intrigues that Popiel orders him to commit upon the people to guarantee the succession, turns on Popiel.

Popiel seeks revenge upon his old commander, but Piastun is rescued from death by a young hunter and warrior, Ziemowit Piastowic. Ziemowit has spent years living with the Vikings and has only recently returned to his former homeland. Ziemowit falls in love with Dziwa, lovely daughter of Wisz, a wealthy local merchant; he wishes to marry her, but Dziwa's fate is sealed by her father - she is to become a priestess in the local temple...
