Travel / Abandoned / Derelict places in Poland to visit [22]

Much less than 2 hours. Get the train to Modlin (lots of those due to the airport) then walk or get the bus to the fortress. Be sure to walk around to the less visited bits.

The Spichlerz (granary) looks fascinating when you see it from across the river. I don't know if people are supposed to visit, though graffiti suggests they do.

News / Human Trafficking in and from Poland [80]

Not great, is it... I remember seeing, about 20 years ago, minibuses from Ukraine to Germany via Poland and all the passengers were very pretty young women. Unpleasant to see, more unpleasant for them when you think how it might end up.

Law / Poland student visa refusal - 'intention to leave' [51]

It might help however first of all you need to contact the university admissions tutor right away. It looks like you may have got the paperwork wrong and admissions tutors and their staff - my partner is such a person - are used to this sort of thing. Which university are you going to study at?

News / FIRST ANNIVERSARY OF POLAND'S PiS ELECTION VICTORY [9]

Pretty well a disastrous year for them, and judging by the scale of popular opposition things will continue to be difficult for them. Should JK appoint himself premier again, we can expect an end to them.

News / Corporate-linked EC attacks Poland's retail tax; govt suspends collection [74]

Poland CURRENT low level of debts won't help if there is no confidence in the government and a belief that the country is a safe, stable and secure place to place capital.

This is absolutely correct. There needs to be inward investment and a structure for exports.

And don't kid yourself that Poland is uniquely placed to survive an economic disaster.

Things could go to pieces very very quickly here.

History / When will you Poles give back German land and the cities which you robbed? [557]

What happened before loving memory is barely if at all relevant. All that matters is the people who live there. Silesia is Polish, so is Wroclaw, Sczecin etc, and Lwow is now Ukrainian.

All those places have a rich heritage, They also have a thriving and more relevant present, and populations who are happy with the status quo.

News / Boeing or Airbus - which ones would be better for the Polish Airlines (LOT)? [35]

LOT has been teetering on the edge of bankruptcy for more than a decade

Many problems with them

One issue is that the low salary levels for pilots compared to other airlines mean that many staff have left and gone to work for other companies.

Real Estate / Question about Czynsz (Building maintenance fees/utilies) in Poland [129]

Levels of czynsz are not particularly high here. This landlord however is trying to exploit his tenant.

Right now in Warsaw, there is a surplus of flats to let, it is a renter's market. Despite that, there are landlords with unrealistic expectations about the rental value of their property. The OP should quit the flat; this person is trying to rip her off.

Food / Does Zurek spoil [5]

leave a soup on the stove for a long time (possibly overnigh

That isn't a long time. Providing there's a lid on the pan, and you don't live somewhere very hot, it's fine.

Food / Does Zurek spoil [5]

it's pure acid just sitting in a pot

There are other ingredients and like anything (except a Big Mac) it will spoil. Like all soups you'd need to heat it to boiling every day that it's left in a pan on the stove. And don't forget airborne bacteria settling on top. Treat it like any other soup.

In any case, if it's good żurek, why would it be sitting around for long?

Real Estate / Question about Czynsz (Building maintenance fees/utilies) in Poland [129]

And also, if the landlord is a normal person and not a company - he is not allowed by law to issue any receipt

He can certainly sign a document that he has received the payment from the tenant. In English that is a receipt. That or receive it via bank transfer.

But yes, very very few landlords declare it, and yes, the level of czynsz suggests that he is making money from that.

Real Estate / Question about Czynsz (Building maintenance fees/utilies) in Poland [129]

If I would make a scandal, for sure I will lose the 2 months rent deposit plus the 1 month rent I already paid.

I think that's a given. One problem in Poland is that the deposit is held by the landlord rather than centrally in a fund. A very high deposit too.

Terri's advice is good. I would suggest moving on as soon as convenient. About the money you already paid him, was it via the bank or was it cash, and if cash, did you get a written receipt?

Real Estate / Question about Czynsz (Building maintenance fees/utilies) in Poland [129]

It is not a utility bill and you should ask to see the precise statement from the housing association before handing over a penny. Have you actually moved in yet? Btw, your landlord almost certainly doesn't declare the income to the tax office so you do have a bit of leverage.

One possibility is to move in then just leave. Perhaps give notice after a couple of weeks if the landlord fails to provide proof of the amount of czynsz. And of course report him/her to the tax office. Btw, czynsz often depends on the number of people in the flat and 1000zl monthly on top of the rent just seems wrong. That's actually a quarter of the average wage!

Real Estate / Question about Czynsz (Building maintenance fees/utilies) in Poland [129]

Is the agreement that you cover the czynsz mentioned specifically in the rental contract?

Personally I would find a new flat as soon as possible. Make sure you pay bank to bank rather than just hand over cash without any proof of payment.

Real Estate / Question about Czynsz (Building maintenance fees/utilies) in Poland [129]

Service charge which often (though not always) covers heating and repair/improvements fund. It's a matter for whoever owns the flat. It looks like the person is trying to justify the rent of 2500 by implying he/she will only get 1500 of it.

That's a high czynsz though, and given that 1500/2500 is not the price of a luxury flat I would personally avoid that particular offer since it's a bad sign of future problems and of course right now in Warsaw it's very much a renter's market.

UK, Ireland / Poles revealed to harbour deep hatred against Anglos when they speak in their own language [62]

She can act against the advice of Her ministers (and has apparently done so once or twice when a former PM was very ill and when the 1974 general election was inconclusive (She chose Labour) however it's something that isn't done lightly and could spark a constitutional crisis if She did so without the support of the Privy Council and parliament (which She had on both previous occasions).

Now, Prince Charles is consulted as a member of the Inner Council and neither of them are likely to go against the will of parliament.
