Language / Translate handwritten document - my great grandfathers passport [16]

You bet, Delph! Been there, done that:-)

It's still, I believe, the only country in Europe at least, where the wife still up till now is addressed by the husband's profession, i.e. "Frau Studienrat Sauer!", even if she's a housewifeLOL

Sweden used to, but not for at least sixty years or so.

Feedback / Removal of Polish diacritical marks [45]

Or perhaps more insidiously, Polish is being phased out slowly as an operative language here on PF and will eventually be replaced solely by English.

Feedback / Removal of Polish diacritical marks [45]

Merely curious, Mods, as to why I'm not able to access the Polish diacritical marks. Is this temporary or has PF been completely re-formatted?

If so, then I'd need an app in order to use these special symbols, yes?

Perhaps the problem lies in my pc after all:-)

Hate to be a bother, thanks!

Just glancing over the above and it occurred to me, being a translator myself, that there are many such official titles whose equivalent in English in this case, can only be approximated, as there frequently is no direct translation:-)

Travel / Tell me all about Krakow! [42]

Those who've visited that city, say that aesthetically, it's one of the loveliest in Poland, particularly of course, the Stary Rynek with the Sukiennica:-))

Life / Why are Muslims seen as a deterrent to Poland? [564]

@rozumiemnic,

Naturally, I meant that tribalism, that is, the feeling of belonging to the same ilk, tribe or peoples of common origin, was still quite pervasive in the States prior to the mid-sixties when "Do your own thing!" overtook "Do the RIGHT thing!!".

:-)

@sanctus spiritus, indeed that inevitable precipice continues to loom large on the horizon. Hopefully, sanity will soon prevail before we're all pushed over the brink!

Academically, that is, in theory, I tend to agree with maintaining a conservative standard within society. We've seen thus far right here in the US that the melting-pot culture has been falling apart at the seams for quite some time now. I also believe that the death knell of our country was first rung as soon as we abandoned our sense of tribalism aka solidarity, and elitism aka catering to the highest levels of society by raising the bar and then keeping it raised.

Problem is, the world's changing, perhaps the worse, and Poland (like the rest of the Continent) can run, but she can't hide forever. Sooner, rather than later, she's going to have to stop running and, like the old saying goes, "If ya can't beat 'em, join 'em!", gut wrenchingly painful and a blow to national pride as this may well be!!

Realizing Poland ISN'T the US or Britain, one can't stop the pace of regress:-)

News / How will BREXIT affect the immigrants in UK and Poland. [1114]

Sort of follow you there, TicTacToe.

Reminds me though of the TV skit when once fella says to the other, "When you were in the hospital after gettin' hit with that fly ball, who came to see ya every day, who brought ya flowers, who watered your plants, who notified your family, huh??!", to which the man's buddy aptly replies, "And who hit me in the head with a fly ball??!"

Tit for tat, Tic! Sure, Thatcher wrote to every family who lost a son, but who was it who put them in harms way to begin with??!

News / How will BREXIT affect the immigrants in UK and Poland. [1114]

It is though more a matter of England's historic disdain for the Irish than vice versa, I'd expect.

Anyhow, Ireland voted to opt out, whereas curiously enough, Scotland voted "Nay", although now Ms. Salmon & Co. wish to pursue a sort of "Scotxit", eh? With Sean Connery leading the pack, no less! Where does he find the timeLOL

Very puzzling the entire business:-)

News / Did George Soros want to destroy Poland with his economic shock therapy? [87]

Trump's several times divorced (the FIRST divorced president), a known flirt and playboy, a teatotler who breaks every other rule in the book and like teflon, seems never to let it stick:-)

So much for "family values". If that's the criterion for the presidency, heck, dump Trump and elect Pence!

I agree here, Sanctus Spiritus!

Trump, Farage and the rest of the bloody Brexiteers are/were guilty of little more than sheer PANDERING to the basest fears of the masses, it's that simple:-)

Not only the UK though! Nearly every industrialized nation on the Continent still believes across the board that Caucasians are meant to be architects, professors, lawyers, doctors, engineers etc., and brown aka dark-skinned non-Europeans are meant to be support staff:-)

I realize that those from India are technically Caucasian as well, they are nevertheless treated far differently.

In Christianity alone??!

Last time I checked, we call it the JUDEO-Christian tradition:-) Where then did all the stuff come from which Christians hold so dear aka monotheism, code of ethics (Ten Commandments)?

Genealogy / Writing to the registry office in Poland in English? [3]

Couldn't agree more!

Tanya, you should pay somebody from the local consulate to translate an English letter into Polish for you.
For a fee, they'll be glad to do it.

If the letter's a short one, I'll be glad to give it a whack:-)

"Multiculturalism" merely translates into cheap labor, unwanted by the masses and brought in by the higher ups without referendum and without consultation:-)

Life / Why are Muslims seen as a deterrent to Poland? [564]

Once more, brainchild, do you equate every single German you meet with some bloodthirsty barbarian hellbent on murder and mayhem??! Do you equate every Catholic priest with some unsightly perv who preys on the innocent and defenseless??!

The prejudice has got to stop in order for ISIS and all other similiar cancers to be nipped in the bud ONCE AND FOR ALL!

Indeed. They THINK they know, but as you just pointed out, apparently nobody knows the Islamic mindset....even the Muslims themselves, right?
Nobody that is except for you, it seems.

Again, why generalize about a minority of scum who clearly do NOT represent the majority whole as in the above examples I provided???

If you don't care that you are a bigot, then no one else should either.

If you honestly can lump ALL Jews aka Judaism with the raw, racist guerilla tactics of Meier Cahan, the rantings and killings of a mastermind Sheik Mohammed as representative of ALL Muslims, the Nazis as representative of ALL Germans etc. ad nauseum, then you are nothing other than an ignorosis!

Because you happen to be from Texas and a mega-jerk, does that make ALL Texans ten-gallon boneheads???!
Ask yourself that one, why dontcha!!

Life / Why are Muslims seen as a deterrent to Poland? [564]

Such bigoted, irresponsible talk demonizes ALL Muslims or followers of Islam, Johnny!! Is Judaism the JDL and the JDL Judaism??! Is Fallwell's Fundamentalism representative of ALL Protestant denominations??! Heaven help us.

There's good and bad in every religion and so what you end up doing is blithely tossing out the baby with the bathwater:-)

Life / Why are Muslims seen as a deterrent to Poland? [564]

ISIS is NOT Islam, but instead, a radical sect from which honest, peace-loving brethren, fellow Muslims, continue to distance themselves!

After all, the Arab greeting, much as in the Hebrew, is "Salaam Alekhum!" aka "Peace Be With You!"
The motto of Turkey, inspite of Erdogan's restructuring of the entire society, remains "Peace at Home, Peace in the World".

Kind of tough to square this with such opposing rhetoric as "Death To All Western Infidels!" and the like, isn't it?

Po polsku / Dlaczego uczysz się Polskiego? [101]
