History / What would they think of today's Poland...? [16]

As Germany is such a big economic force, it is not surprising. I am of the opinion that business like that prevents wars. It is also a healthy sign that people have moved on.

It's either trade or war. Strong economic ties are a great deterrent. The golden arches theory still manages to work pretty well.

Please keep this thread ON TOPIC.

History / Which nation were the biggest pussies of WWII? [120]

I agree absolutely, although if the Polish commanders would be good planners the war would have lasted a whooping two weeks longer, maybe.

I meant more on the long term strategic side of things. I mean Hitler wrote exactly what he was going to do nearly 15 years before the invasion.

If France did go to war then it'd end there and then in Berlin, Poland might or might not get overrun by the Soviets but the West would have benefitted, no Nazi occupation for France, no bombing of London etc.

France was expecting to make good use of the Maginot line while mobilizing the rest of the forces. The political situation in France at the time was utter chaos as well. And there's the whole pussy thing too.

UK, Ireland / Banks in Poland won't accept blemished UK notes [14]

Its the same in Russia , they love your dollars , but only if they are in pristine condition....

Like the ones that come out of Russian ATMs :)

I think dollars in Russia are meant to be transported in envelopes, or put into shoeboxes under beds, not pockets.

Travel / Poland trains in winter [7]

It should be announced more clearly what kind of train it is.

I couldn't agree more, I'm on an EIC now, 1st class. Looks and feels like a 2nd class ICE wagon. Loads cheaper than DB though :) So far, pleasantly surprised.

History / Which nation were the biggest pussies of WWII? [120]

Poland never had 950k nor 40 divisions it had 38 division on paper, the nominal number of troops completely mobilised was around 800k from which less then 600k made it to combat, Germany had 1.8 milion active troops, Russia had 650k and Slovakia had around 50k for a total of around 2.5 milion men against 600-800 mobilized Poles, thats 3/4-1.

my apologies, bad planners, not pussies.

You listed the French, which is interesting as France went to war because of Poland. Not because it was being attacked.

History / Which nation were the biggest pussies of WWII? [120]

Russia was not the naked aggressor thats the difference and the point anyway, youre conveniently skipping that. They bacame a threat and the reasons are far from different than those preceding WWII.

There was naked aggression shown to the UK? I'm pretty sure that it was the UK declared war on Germany.

Didn't the Soviets invade Finland? Why no intervention there?

Anyway, your argument for the UK going to war with the Nazis was that it was morally right. There is a different criteria that applies to the Soviets?

4:1 in people.

2mil:950k
90 divisions:40 divisions

Anyway, fighting ferociously against an invading army is all well and good, but they turned over fairly quickly. Because of working harder and not smarter, Poland got the sh*t kicked out of it.

So apart from being an uneducated moron having an opinion and zip knowledge you were saying what?;)

So Poland didn't get the sh*t kicked out of it? Noble does not equal victorious... or good for that matter.

I understand that Poland was defeated in a month.

I also understand that Poles were outnumbered 2:1 by the invaders. I also know that they were massively outgunned. That led to them getting the sh*t kicked out of them.

Free from what Stalinism? WTF. If youre talking about communism in Eastern Europe it was clearly weighed up. Personally i think we should have kept going but thats easy for me to say, the threat was extinguished with Hitler gone.

Yes, Stalinism. Morally wrong. Nazi Germany only became a threat to Britain when war was declared.

The man being Roosevelt i assume, capitalism vs socialism.

Hitler actually.

Nowhere, Poland put up a badass resistance that could not be and was not effective but badass none the less.

Poland got the **** kicked out of it. 10 years to prepare and ended up falling in a month.

History / Which nation were the biggest pussies of WWII? [120]

It was everyones WAR, based on morals. Thats the fundamental of war. How can you say it wasnt their war?

If it were based on morals, the armies should have kept marching East until Russia was free.

It wasnt the US's war either but should the UK have fallen it soon would have been thats the whole point.

That wasn't the plan. And the man pretty much followed his plan exactly as he laid it out.

No they did not, bar a few engagements their performace was so f*cking humiliating its not even funny, they win second place after Italians.

Where does Poland fit into your list?

To try and conqour your enemy the BRITISH of course. I guess the safe plan was sit it out and see what happens then jump into bed with the dominating power, noble put puss1e all the same.

It still wasn't their war. They didn't sign a defense pact a couple days before.

Switzerland? You might as well throw Sweden in there too.

But then again, all those countries were mobilizing at the time. Buying time as well, like the UK and France did during the phony war.

USA, Canada / Do you speak English? Have you lived in America? New LOVE/HATE list......... [144]

Kingfisher is very crisp. Tsingtao was another crisp Asian beer that I liked.

I have a batch of double IPA that is almost finished. I could throw some of the dust from the grain bags together, maybe throw in a hop pellet and make a custom Seanus "crisp" brew :)

Anybody who is dumb enough to think that any part of the USA can be a good place for beer is clearly far too moronic to be permitted to remain in Poland

Some of the best beer in the world comes from up there. Great hops too. 99% of beer drinkers in Europe drink crap pale lagers all day long thinking that it is somehow better than the crap pale lagers that are sold in the US. The northwest USA has a beer culture at least on par with England.

USA, Canada / Do you speak English? Have you lived in America? New LOVE/HATE list......... [144]

All things considered, Perła's not a bad beer, but really is quite pedestrian compared to any three dozen microbrews from any decent microbrewing region of the US, be it Vermont, Oregon, Wisconsin or anywhere else. Some of the Amber brewery's beers like Koźlak or Żywe are nice here in Poland, but I sure do miss living in the Pacific Northwest. Beer heaven.

Perla is about as exciting as Budweiser. On the other hand, Zywiec porter is an excellent corner store beer. Hell, it's an excellent beer period. You're spot regarding microbrews in the states.

And because they're a decent outfit, I'll plug browamator again. Great homebrew supply shop.

and investments that a country has in Poland and apparently the leader is still France.

If you go down further they have total positions of foreign companies in the Polish market.

But like you said....as long as there is money coming in, doesn't really matter who it's coming from. I wonder how long it will take for FDI to pick back up...

Love / Well.. I got a Polish girl pregnant.. [88]

It's a process which can be reversed though..

I was thinking chemical castration.. but surgical would be ok too. To spend the money to reverse it would mean at least some kind of want and desire to take care of a kid.

Either that, or sterilize yourself.

Which in these cases is the preferred option. Thinking about starting a charity to sterilize people. Offer them a six pack and a new car. Think about the benefit to society...

Love / Well.. I got a Polish girl pregnant.. [88]

I was travelling around europe and had a fling with a polish girl in france for a couple of weeks. Same thing, she emailed me saying she is pregnant. Not sure if its mine and all, but does anyone know the laws re: Australia?

Buy a home paternity test and see if it's yours. It's through a third party, the chance of fraud taking place is pretty low. If it's yours, welcome to fatherhood. If not, enjoy your missed bullet and invest in some jimmy hats.

History / What would they think of today's Poland...? [16]

They are our second largest partner after France and it has nothing to do with me
liking it or not.

I think the references that you are using were from back in the early 2000's when France bought up a bunch of banks. Investment has tapered off substantially.

Apparently Holland has the largest overall holdings, followed by Germany, France, and all the countries that use Luxembourg for holding companies.

Germany is also the destination or source for 25% of foreign trade...I'd say they are probably by and large the largest economic partner. Mix in some EU money, a couple million Poles in Germany, and you've got a mutually beneficial relationship.

Paiz has the latest information, NBP only has the 2008 report online.
nbp.gov.pl/publikacje/zib/zib2008.pdf

But back to what would they think of Poland. What would they think about the countryside vs. the city? Would they feel comfortable with Polands place in Europe? Would they feel ok with the perception of Poland in Europe?

*scratches head at Hollands and Luxembourg high numbers*

Holland because of shipping and banking and Luxembourg because of all the holding companies based there.

History / What would they think of today's Poland...? [16]

I'd say that at the moment ties with France are much stronger than they ever
were before. France is the largest foreign investor in Poland

Are you sure about that? Germany, Holland, and Sweden are responsible for way more FDI and trade than France.
paiz.gov.pl/poland_in_figures/foreign_direct_investment

You probably don't like it, but Germany is far and away Polands biggest economic partner.

UK, Ireland / Documentary on foreign and local workers in a town in England. [66]

We have student loans in Holland aswell, but the tricky part is that you won't get a student loan if you're unqualified. They demand higher qualifications in order for you to attend college or university. (Which in itself wouldn't be a problem, if only you could afford the education!) Are you sure this will be different in America? Or anywhere else? If so, I'm all ears..

Yes, very much so. My brother is going to school now (sister through the military, but that's another story)....our family isn't exactly rich. He's supporting his education through burger king and pell grants. He's smart enough to know that a degree in anthropology probably won't pay the bills.

News / Polish-American soldier and his wife murdered by four marines [163]

Skysoul already replied correctly to your statement but I will add that the U.S. statistics show that although blacks are almost 13 percent of the population, blacks are also 50 percent of the murderers.

Million dollar question is why?

F*ck Al Sharpton.

98 percent of all slaves brought from Africa to the Americas were sold or traded for goods by other black chieftans.

yup. lets ignore the people that are screaming about being kept down by the man and figure out how to fix the problem.

How about a trip to Abkahzia in the spring? I need a vacation, have friends down there, it's beautiful.
