News / Hypocritical PC dictatorship bans Polish film in Berlin [26]

Well since he's trying to recreate the PRL he'd have to engineer a break with the west and resubjugation under Russia.... He clearly hates the west and westernized Poles far more than he hates Russia.

So they feared ISIS terrorists would blow up the cinema?

I make no claim about their thinking may be. I was just pointing that nothing in the article linked indicated that "controversy" was a reason for the cancellation.

So it's just a pretext for the PC dictatorship to again rear its ugly head, is it?

What isn't just a pretext for the PC dictatorship to again rear its ugly head?

Who financed the movie? I am wondering why the Polish embassy is involved in movie premieres....

No, the only reason given by the theater was Sicherheitsbedenken (security concerns).

The whole sentence is:

Den Vorwurf, der Film sei zu kontrovers, wies der Botschafter zurück.

Literally,

The accusation (acc) the film was too controversial, pointed the ambassador back (here: point back = reject)

More freely

The ambassador rejected the accusation that the film was too controversial.

But the accusation is not attributed to anyone in the story.

Law / Polish citizenship for de-facto relationships [14]

an invention created long ago to keep the masses calm and sedated and coerce them into leading non-rebellious "productive" lives :)

Monogamous marriage is designed to harness and exploit male productiviy. It's the system that gets the largest number of married and in families (and men with families to support are the traditional economic motor behind the rise of the west).

Many think that technological and economic developments mean that men don't have to be exploited so ruthlessly and that's part of the rise of feminism (and why many men are opting out of the labor market in the US).

Work / Advice on Teaching English in Poland [709]

Is it really so unusual for schools in Poland to hire outside of the start of the academic year

It can happen to anyone, what you want to look out for is schools where this happens a lot (hard to verify outside the country).

I'm currently teaching in Ukraine and my contract finishes in January.

How long have you been in Ukraine? Where? I would imagine that if you can manage to navigate things there then Poland won't be able to surprise you...

One potential problem with a blacklist depends on whether it names schools or people.... (the really shady operators are always opening "new" schools and/or putting them in relatives names).

Do civil weddings exist in Poland?

All weddings are civil. In Poland civil weddings can be perfromed by priests in church but they're still civil weddings (the church can't prevent people who got married in church for divorcing for example, if the church neglects to do the proper civil paperwork you're not married legally etc).

And weddings with no religious element at all are completely possible.

And marriage will improve your legal situation a great deal.

News / Commie-era ex-SB and militia being phased out, Poland's interior minister [30]

no agreement concluded with them was eternally binding.

Did I call it or did I call it? agreements, rule of law, all mere trifles to the ultimate prinicple of rule by party leader, prl style.

In my book, no one, even when discussing with an opponent one despises, should promise things they cannot/knowingly won't deliver

Exactly. Reneging on negotiated deals is a very bad idea.

Historical note: That's one reason the first PiS government failed, they were constantly making deals and then trying to renegotiate before the ink was dry. JK has a history of negotiating in bad faith.

If there was an agreement during the roundtable talks not to prosecute those who were in power at the time against a peaceful transition, how can those in charge then (Bolek in particular) renege on their word 2 or 3 years later?

I think the idea of holding up one's end of an agreement is pretty alien to polly, we know what he thinks of rule of law (a scam whereas rule by party leader is superior) so any agreement he made would be reneged upon as soon as he thought he could get away with it.

News / FIRST ANNIVERSARY OF POLAND'S PiS ELECTION VICTORY [9]

Szydło promised not to appoint Antoni Macierewicz as a minister in her cabinet. That promised was broken.

Apparently it wasn't her promise to make.... as she was quickly reminded the second polls were closed.

News / FIRST ANNIVERSARY OF POLAND'S PiS ELECTION VICTORY [9]

Every country gets tired of a ruling party after a while. Nothing especially new or interesting that people had had enough of PO

PM Beata Szydło's government

Oh please, it's no more her government than a house belongs to a guard dog.

the democratically elected government

Please remind everybody how certain people (JK, AM) were kept out of public view during the campaign. This led many gullible people to believe the party was evolving into a more or less sane Christian Democrat party, something which Poland could actually use.

Of course the second the Szydło delivered the victory (an enormous feat, far more impressive than anything JK was ever able to do) she was pushed aside in favor of a bunch of toxic commie era fossils. One result was the immediate disillusionment of many young voters who are now more cynical than ever about the political process.

The fossils then set out to destroy the rule of law (in favor of PRL style rule by party leader), poor more public resources down the Smolensk rabbit hole, destory one of the most prestigious Polish international brands (pride of poland), lower Poland's international reputation by keeping its beggar bowl out while making demads on the entity actually giving it money and they instituted widespread appointment by cronyism instead of pushing for transparent appointments based on competence (the exact problem that too many Polish businesses have).

I might be interested in what a PiS government freed the pararnoid Kaczyński, petty Ziobro and death-**** obsessed Macierewicz might be like. But they clearly plan on holding on to power as long as their liver spotted hands hold out and their lips can form the sacred PiS motto... "teraz.. kvrvva.. my!"

History / Kaczynski's Legacy [88]

The twins were raised in a very patriotic anti-communist family.

Which is why they were child stars, lived in a villa and got into law school (an optionnot widely available to the real proletariat....)

What you're saying is they were hypocritical, happy to use and support the PRL state while privately complaining about it?

History / Kaczynski's Legacy [88]

Another constantly repeated HB lie. That oturageous statement has never been backed by the smallest shred of evidence

It's reaching and an overstatement but the evidence points to the K family as not being anything remotely like persecuted outsiders in the PRL. They did well for themselves in that system (while cautiously planting seeds for a spot in the replacement).

JK of course is currently trying to rewrite history with himself in a leading role in the dissident movement he almost certainly did not play...

News / Corporate-linked EC attacks Poland's retail tax; govt suspends collection [74]

there was no modern distribution in Poland in 1990

Yes! In the early 90s almost all Polish retail operated on the old "job lot" system. They would buy a bunch of stuff from wholesalers and then when they sold it they would go back and buy some more stuff. There was virtually no tracking of what was wanted or not and so there would be weird dislocations and no continuity of products. The current system is far superior in terms of supplying stores with things people want to buy.

And this was something that could not have been created by educating entrepreneurs, the big retailers built most of the current retail infrastructure from scratch.

And they are not making and have never made big profits

To socialists, all profits are theft and must be stamped out.

the Japs

You just cannot stay away from ethnic slurs, can you?

What's generally going on is that production is being outsourced to cheaper countries (Germany is kind of anomolous in that way but will have to follow suit because there soon won't be enough qualified workers in Germany itself).

Essentially the entire 20th century was one long protracted war* about the most efficient economic system (capitalism, fascism, socialism to various degrees) and multi-national capitalism wiped out all the competition. The current century is going to be about the optimal political configuration given the victory of capitalism (probably not the nation state).

*not my idea, originally proposed by Phillip Babbit I believe

dominated by non-native capital to the same extent Poland is?

Pretty much, there's maybe a standard deviation or so between them.

In case of an armed conflict, the foreign bank of a beligerent country will serve its Polish state and individual clients as if it were a Polish-owned bank?

Capital does not want armed conflict. The more international capital dominates countries the less wars there are (swings and roudabouts).

it is not imprtant to have ready access to helicopter maintenance and spares within the country rather than at the other end of Europe

What? you wanna go to war with France? Have you been channeling crow?

If that were true, countries such as Holland, Germany, France and Britain would be tripping over one another to scrap their manufacturing industries

They mostly are

PM Morawiecki can hardly be called an "old fogy"!

Okay, "young fogy".

You still haven't explained why Poland should be doomed to remain under the thumb of FOREIGN CAPITAL.

All capital now is FOREIGN CAPITAL. Name me a single country (besides maybe Japan and Korea) that is not under the thumb of FOREIGN CAPITAL.

Capital is almost entirely internationalized now and only old fogies ideologically stuck in the 1970s don't realize that.

If large corporates or banks are not happy with the taxation structure within Poland they can quite simply move their business elsewhere

And they will, have you ever heard of "capital flight" it happens pretty much every single time that socialists win an election. Stop electing socialists!

They tried to stack the TK with 14 of the 15 judges and "generously" allowed 1 for the entire opposition

This is a remnant of their long time in office. I do agree that they shouldn't have appointed the last two judges. I think they did that to sucker JK into a losing fight underestimating just how sociopathic and power hungry he was and is. I don't think they realized that JK would simply junk the constitution and overthrow the rule of law in favor of rule by Kaczyński...

gladly forgo a huge chunk of their profits

Almost no corporations have "huge" profits. Most companies run on very small profit margins, taking that away from them is killing the golden goose.

But, you can take JK out of communism, but you can't take the communism out of JK.....

There has been no greater oldboy network than that created by PO/PSL,

So? What relevance does that have on what I wrote? If PiS were so bound and determined to create good change (they're not, but let's pretend they are) then why do they muddle up hiring processes, get bogged down in legislative dead ends, follow boondoggles in the making (unnecessary education "reform") and appoint so many incompetent people?

I'm not writing about PO I'm writing about PiS, please stay on topic, old bean.

PiS now enjoy 34% support

That's basically their base. Everybody agrees they have a 30 % or so base that will never desert them. 34 % is a little over their base and PO despite the reprivatization scandal is slowing growing.

The big problem with PiS is that it's not a meritocracy but rather an emerging oligarchy and they have way too many incompetent people floating around who can't be trusted not to wreck anything they're put in charge of. A good example is how PiS single-party-ily managed to wreck one of Poland's international brands (Arabian horses). And the party has worked to make putting people on the taxpayer funded payroll less transparent so that party potentantes can appoint stooges and accomplices rather than competent people (this is why so many Poles aren't crazy about working for Polish employers - PiS is a stereotypical Polish employer who promotes according to connections instead of competence).

Similarly they can't even write legislation that meets EU requirements. Why don't they have specialists in EU law to make sure that nothing that gets voted on is in violation of it? People with more skills should have been able to draft the corpotate tax legislation in a way that did not violate EU rules.
