Life / Polish plantlife and similar flora where you live. [81]

Do pigeons eat all the cherries before they're ripe.

No, ah a few little nice birds have a nibble as you said but most come out beautifully. And there are many cherries on both trees.

They are delicious sweet cherries, I can't eat the sour cherries, way too sour for me.

The Romans actually deliberately caught birds for food using the Mountain Ash tree (Sorbus aucuparia). Aucuparia actually means bird catcher.

i love it, i want to know this type stuff too, it gives a much better appreciation of it all, a historic perspective.

Remember to pick off the underdeveloped apples at the end of the season

I will do, thanks.

The tree will produce more fruit if you do this.

One of the problems is that the two apple trees produce too many big juicy apples, making it too heavy.
I had to tie it to another tree last year to keep it up, i will cut the branches this year to stop it from toppling over.

i bought some tree antiseptic, so the wounds don't go septic.
The local kids help and i give it to people to make apple jam, yum yum!.

harbour wildlife

I left the end of the garden completely wild for the fairies (What i understand to be wild life :), it used to be chest high grass, now it is nettles.

An old peach

Sorry the photo doesn't show it well enough.
It is a very young, very tall peach tree, a few years away from having fruit.
I need to clip it down and move it into the sun, said someone else and it makes sence.

Remove a load of bunches so that the others can grow more instead.

Interesting, this is the first time this off cut will (hopefully) produce grapes, but the rest of it was growing rapidly.
I have put up a Trellis for it to grow up, crawling plants need something to grow on, right?.
Well it looks a lot happier, even since yesterday.

rose family (roses, apples, pears, plums, peaches)

Roses are linked to them? wow, How come the rest produce fruit?.

Cutting back for most deciduous plants should be done in the winter.

what about evergreen trees?. I have to cut about 40 thin, too tall, evergreen trees, that's why I bought the tree antiseptic.

For fruit trees, cutting too much can result in a year without flowers or fruit.

Ah, I need to cut one of the apple trees, it is way too heavy when the apples are ripe.
What do you suggest?, I was thinking of putting in a crutch but to be careful not to cut into it.

Thank you very much Osiol, i will add to this and try to describe conditions a bit better. great!.

pawian, are you growing oranges? in Poland? how do they taste?.

PF my garden, garden PF.

Photos
1. Cherries,
2. apples,
3. Blackcurrant, totem pole, peach tree. I have to move these, as you can see the peach tree has grown too tall and now is weak because of lack of sunlight and the blackcurrant is not doing to well either.

4. My grapes, i planted this last Spring, it was an off cut of someone else's, and those little beady things, I am told are grapes.

Yes, this could be the worlds most boring thread I will try to put some boobs in it every now and again to liven it up :)

History / The Celts in Poland. [71]

Any true Celt should feel pride when listening to and watching this.

Just to make sure we are on the same page, the people who built Newgrange were way before the Celts.
The Celts are traditionally thought to have colonised Ireland in a series of waves between the 8th and 1st centuries BC, that is 2300 years after the building of Newgrange.

Travel / Poland in photo riddles [3134]

What two countries are here?

Spanish and Portuguese,
Spanish because of the fans in the girls hands, while they are dancing and Portuguese because I don't know what their national costume is like.

3What Polish saying does this pic visualise?

This is the old Polish proverb about "the window and door with the big peice of wood nailed to it, will be hard to open"?.

I have no idea.

4 What is the guy doing and why?

Spitting on the people below?
Shouting a wish out to the god of the north wind?
Attempting suicide but he is afraid of heights, ?.
Taking a photograph of the thing below, getting a bird's eye view, part of a castle?.
Avoiding the woman behind him?.

5What`s up?

Pawian, this is a bride and groom sharing a romantic time after they are married in a forest, you are a peeping Tom, that's what's up :)

This is when some guy pretends to be the groom to have a rumble in the forest before she gets married?.

6What`s he doing there?

Is that a canoe in his pocket or is he just glad to see someone?.
He is collecting mushrooms?.

7 Do Poles normally drive such cars?

The answer should be no, which makes me think it is "yes" because "no" is too simple.
So I will say sometimes, or i will be more precise and say yes but only on national antique car day?.

8 What is it?

A dwarf's attempt at humour? laughing at tall people trying to walk in?.

The entrance stone.

cileing of Newgrange

At the end of the passage there are three chambers.
These chambers contain basins, with burnt remains of five (?) humans, along with pieces of jewellery.

basin

So it is presumed that this is a burial chamber of sorts.

This is the stone at the back of the building, again showing Spirals, Lozenges or Zig-Zag formations.

this "Zig-Zag" motif is found on the entrance stone and repeated along the passage and again inside the chamber.

OK, so here is the "new" part of our understanding.
This is an interesting theory but remember it is only a theory, for now anyway.

I have heard that the resonant frequency of the inside of the man made passage was constructed in such a way that the reverberations produce some unusual and interesting effects.

The resonant frequency is 110hz, the frequency of the male baritone, the second lowest singing voice (chanting).
And when the inside of the passage is filled with smoke or mist, the resonant frequency reverberates turning the smoke into the Zig-Zag formation!.

"Archaeologists have suggested that chanting, singing and drumming at these sites would have produced reverberating echoes that might have been interpreted as voices of spirits or gods; they may also have induced physiological and psychological changes in people, adding to...

Built at the same period these make a much larger complex.

"It is clear from the orientation of the passage-mounds that the whole complex was devoted to accurate measuring of both the lunar and solar cycles simultaneously."

here are over 350 known court-tombs in the whole of Ireland.

and Wedge tomb.

Of course similar constructions can be found in other parts of Europe and indeed the world but my focus is on Ireland.
Which is rich in prehistoric myths and legends about these enigmatic people and structures.
For an example these were referred to as fairy mounds.

History / Polish hatred towards Jews... [1290]

A Jew's faith is passed down from the mother's side.

Yeah, I have heard that before, why is that?.

I agree, the Catholic church needs to bear responisbility for the actions of Polish Catholics.

Are you talking about John Paul II's speech?.

John Paul, who survived the Nazi occupation of his native Poland, noted that some Christians risked their lives to save Jews from death camps. But he spoke of actions by individuals, not of the church as a whole.

History / Polish hatred towards Jews... [1290]

The difference is that historically a lot of trades (i.e. professions with guilds) were closed to Jews, so other professions (medicine & law especially) had to be gone into.

I have heard that banking was not such a great job at the time, as many people would dislike bankers, is this true at all?.

Harry,
Do you think that the Jews through their hard educational ethic and being bankers historically has led people to resentment them?.
I am asking you because you seem more versed in this subject.

They ARE all of a special greedy group...cousins to lawyers...if I had a daughter I would forbid her to marry one! :)

Apart from the obvious miscommunication in my and your post, what does the smiley face at the end of your statement mean?.

History / Polish hatred towards Jews... [1290]

am I right that this issue because Isreal insisit to be a Jewish state and can't tolerate high population of Arabs in the country??

Possibly, I do not know enough on the subject but it does appear that the Israelis were too heavy handed bombing Palestinian civilians.
But this thread is about "Polish hatred towards Jews...".

I would like to comment on something I said earlier

What i meant about diplomatic integration, is that with the Jews having been invited over, given special privileges and being so good at making business due to studying.

That perhaps, the indigenous population (Polish) could have felt jealousy at another tribe or people making money, even though it was through work and organisation.

And through hard times this would manifest itself into something stronger.
This could have led to resentment?
Jews were heavely involved in Banking (again great business).
Also banking in those days was not much different from now and are we not all mad at the banks these days?
Now imagine today the bankers were all members of a specific group, it would not be hard to see how people could hate them.
Well this is all hear say conjecture but I am interested to hear your thoughts.

What is going on in Palestan is the reason why people don't like Jews today

Although you have a valid point I would not have made this statement.
What is going on in Palestine is the reason why people don't like Israel today.
I do see a difference, do you?.

History / Polish hatred towards Jews... [1290]

If I could help, most likely I would (honestly I don't know).

This statement is very true, we have all had this discussion at some stage in our lives.
And the truth is we will never know until we are in this position, and I truly hope none of us ever are.

Aagain you all just jealouse because they are smarter then the Poles.admit it.

Perhaps rephrasing this would be a good idea?.
Let me attempt,
It appears that people of the Jewish faith worship knowledge and there must be real pressure on their youth to study, go to University and do good business and make lots of money.

Sure didn't the King of Poland, all those hundreds of years ago, invite over a load of Jews to do the banking and business because they were so well educated at these things?.

It appears Jews studied hard and remained a people without a country for so long because of their persistence and belief.
Perhaps a bit like when Poland did not exist for 150 years, but the people believed it did.
But personally I think a bit more diplomatic integration would have been good, how? I hear you ask, I haven't got the foggiest.
The Polish people I have met certainly do not hate Jews, why would they?.

It appears to me that Jews fled persecution from all over Europe and settled here, in Poland, very well then the German Nazis came and changed all that, set up death camps killing Poles and people of the Jewish faith.

Now people remember Jews being killed in Poland, well come over and see for yourselves.
There is a fantastic Jewish festival in Krakow each year, celebrating everything Jewish.

I don't take all this very serious

Great!, I thought as much, I even made time to write you a Limerick.

just silly?.

well if you put it this way, 99% of this forum is too.

I would say some are far worse but I have a tendancy not to look at them, unless i am really bored or hungover, or both.

Polish clubs (pure) vodka is the great nr 1 drink.

I was listening on the radio here the other day, how they were saying that Vodka is not the number one drink here anymore but the drinkers these days drink more beer and wine than vodka.

I would have to agree, from the pubs that I frequent.

History / Polish hatred towards Jews... [1290]

Let me ask you again, moral judges of Poles, would YOU risk your children lives to save a Jew?

I think most people would not risk their own necks to save someone who is not of their own family and even that i am unsure of.

To put it another way, would any of you, put your life or that of your family on the line for me?.
Answers on a post card to :

That is why the people who did risk it all should be honoured, for that is true bravery.

You were giving it the land of the free and the brave speech, as if your opinion was the only one that counts and people are not allowed to give their opinion about your opinion was being implied.

You got to admit the title of this thread is just silly?.

I don't see anything wrong with posting my opinion on this forum. This is what forum is for, to exchange different opinions and informations. I'm raised in a free country where people say it if they don't like someone or something and what's wrong with that? You guys do it too making your comments about my country and my people and if this Ok then it's also Ok for me to express myself too.

So you can say whatever you like but nobody else can...hhhmmm...
Are the rest of us not expressing our thoughts? or in your country is it only the people from that country that have this privilege?.

FreeBird is damn right!

You are quite a funny fella, aren't you?.

not really to complain but point out the differences

a lot of people come on here pointing and talking about differences.
Why don't people try to understand different cultures instead?.
It is well within your rights to make 80% of Polish people seem boring to you but would you not think that a more fruitful life could be had by trying to understand the subtle complexities of another culture.

(I am asking because you have intelligence).

I like the way you're trying to be half-nice, lol

Well, I see it as offering an alternative.

I can be the same way, maybe this is why I like to party with Brits

I am Irish but you are forgiven (but only half;)

Oh sorry my bad

Correction again, you should have stated "my BAAAAaaaad"

I'm not saying that everyone here (including your person) has to feel the same way about it.

80% of Polish people are boring or can't party, why???

Your title is a statement and looking for an explanation to back that statement up.
I am offering an alternative
If you are not happy or are dissatisfied with my replies please contact Mr. Couldn'tcarless at Complaintsdepartment@hotmail

As far as being "bored", yes I'm at times.

I meant now, for coming up with such a thread.

After reading your posts on this thread, it seems like you spent some time here in Poland, visited many places, you were invited to a few parties and all you have to show for your experiences is to complain.

Your stance has also change a lot from your original assertion but that is life, I suppose.
I suppose what I am trying to say is this, have you any interesting to say about your experiences? (I bet you do).

Ok seanus

That'd be the sheep.

A better question freebird, is what is your idea of fun?.

What I mean, drink a little slower, sing a little nicer

Well that is a far cry from "80% of Polish people are boring or can't party, why???".

You must be bored to come up with such a thread?.

80% of Polish people are boring or can't party, why???

A break down of this statement.

1. I know all Polish people and have been parting with the lot of them.
2. I did a statistical survey and found that 20% are not fun (how fun is that?).
3. Everyone must like what I like and party the way I think is fun.

What kind of experiences have you made?

Good ones.

A better question freebird, is what is your idea of fun?.
