Language / How hard is it to learn Polish? [178]

the average standard (excepting certain of the traditional Ivy Leagues, of course) in English had decreased sharply since the 1960's, well up through the 80's

Love / Concerns about Polish Family / Child Support Law [68]

show her some pictures of rotten teeth, and tell her how many young kids actually need an operation under general anasthetic as there teeth are so rotten and so neglected by their parents.

Mostly it is sweets, squash, and fizzy drinks.
Ask her if that is what she wants for her kid.
He can eat sweets later.
If you are paying for everything, take some control as well.

Life / Polish dubbing in movies; why is it so that on polish television all the films are dubbed? [135]

Hate it. You cannot hear the original voices properly, and I cannot understand the translation. So it's two lots of useless dialogue.
However, once or twice I have enjoyed watching a movie like this together with someone who cannot speak English. So it has its points. It's the same voice, flat and characterless for all the voices. Cheap cheap cheap.

the van with the "P1 KEY" number plate, and a "traveller" guy a few years back?

ah no that was in the valley of Firle, redneck country some miles from Lewes. Its all feudal Sussex though....definitely a sinister side to all that burning.

Language / Polish words that sound funny? [224]

hahaha that reminds me years ago I toasted a Serbian drinking buddy with 'Slainte'.
'Why you say me small elephants?' he said, all confused. ;)

3 to 5 years- having your kids totally immersed in a language only to have to move again is a bit of a waste.

not sure how that would be a 'waste' ...would have thought that after 3 to 5 years they would be fluent, and have a real lifelong skill.

Sure it would be fine if the kids were relatively tiny, like under about 8, they would learn the language in no time.
With older kids it could be a disaster with no learning support.
On the other hand, at least they would learn a language (eventually)
Schools are teaching precious little anyway, I have two kids and the only one who is learning anything is the one who needs extra help.

The 'bright' one learns NOTHING apart from in language classes.
So maybe I will move to some country that would do them a favour linguistically.
One could always find a private home tutor for after school help for the first few months.
As for the mother's language problem, hey, she could always learn the language.

Do you think Polish, Hispanic children, Chinese children Japanese children etc all attend Polish Chinese Japanese schools when their parents move to the UK or the US ?

no, that's quite a silly question. I think there are dedicated teachers and assistants in every UKstate school, as many as are needed, who specialise in English as a second language and learning support. One primary school my children attended had 160 languages represented.

In monocultural, monolingual countries not geared up for immmigration, it just wouldn't work.

Real Estate / Banks in Poland selling fewer mortgages in 2011, down 49% [285]

Shitholes go for 250K in London, £300k gets you a 40m2 flat in Battersea.

it's OK I was just leg pulling..;) but what sounds like shedloads of money buys a cupboard on a council estate......
Anyway I agree with most of your points.
Emigration sounds like a good move.
I really cannot take my kids' teachers seriously .......and only private school teachers take children and their parents seriously.
'Training' them up to be shyte work fodder, to conform and be silent.

Language / How hard is it to learn Polish? [178]

Lysko please do not patronise me, anyway I am not a 'non-native'. btw I know very well the word "quixotic" is from Don Quixote by Miguel de Cervantes, (a famous Spanish writer just in case you do not know) and can hardly be applied to a language, nor is it synonymous with 'quirky'.

Also if you're going to pontificate about languages, you could at least check your facts and meanings.
Its not 'Cymrae' it's CYMRAEG.
I rest my case.

Language / How hard is it to learn Polish? [178]

y quixotic (not to mention, unphonetic) languages such as those in the Celtic family, among them notably Cymrae (Welsh to you)-:)

CymraeG is a phonetic language though.
Also, how exactly can a language be "quixotic"?
Do you mean "quirky" maybe?

UK, Ireland / Websites for Poles to benefit from Britain! [210]

I think so as well -

all of us would benefit if we put the same effort in making friends that we put in trying to prove who is better than others.

absolutely agree. we all contradict ourselves sometimes don't we? Have to keep rising above it in mind at all times......;0)

Language / How hard is it to learn Polish? [178]

foreign native speakers (whose English is frequently horrendous!!!) tell me how "simple" English is compared with their language

thing is, it IS simple at a basic functional level.....many learners never see or reach beyond this.

Maybe for Guardian readers that live in the nicer parts of the country and don't feel invaded it is a "far richer" place with a few foreigners.

Why do you disguise yourself under the Polish nick . it is a pity you don`t understand anything " nicnierozumiem " . Your nick looks just awkward

I am not disguised at all. I am learning Polish, and am quite aware that 'rozumiemnic' is grammatically incorrect. Y'see, unlike you, I have reached a point in my life where I no longer pretend to understand everything, and I chose a nick that reflects this.

have a nice day.

trick or treating is an american activity,

Among the top ten famous British is Isaak Newton who is not British , he is Jewish . But no one claims in a wiki he is Jewish or says he is 40 % British 60 % Jewish because of his mother Hannah , a Jewess.

Jewish and British are not mutually exclusive, y know.
Your ridiculous and rather spiteful statement is like saying..."oh he is not British, he is a Jehovahs Witness". Rubbish in other words.

Classifieds / English cuisine week in Lidl shops in Poland [203]

the best stuff is Scottish and not English. Cheddar and scampi,

how is Cheddar and scampi Scottish exactly? You sweaty socks crack me up, you blindly deny any responsibility for colonialism, and yet want to grab anything good in Britain for yourselves.

BTW CHeddar is in Somerset if you failed to locate it near Stenhousemuir.

they seem to be utterly mesmorised by the horror of a jar of pickled eggs in a chippie

pikcled eggs are freaky and weird. Are they ever actually eaten?

Beef and guiness pie and the West Wales hills..;)

English breakfast is superb. An Italian student I fed it to even complimented it! What higher accolade? He had it for dinner though........
