News / Polish Police Hunt for Bad Taste Boorish Brits [39]

All That is not an excuse for such a behavior.

Nobody says it is Ironside. But what are the police going to do? Throw the whole of central Krakow into the drunk tank? My daughter went to university there, and knew what to expect, so she simply let the boorish louts get on with their stag parties. It's called live and let live.

News / Polish Police Hunt for Bad Taste Boorish Brits [39]

It was classic British in-yer-face contempt for Poles. An unapologetic "eff you" to all of Poland.

Hilarious! How would you know, likely having never visited either culture, and living in a police state as you do. The reason why the Krakow police chief is saying now that the police are looking for these men is simply that they are now tucked up safe in their local J.D. Weatherspoons in Bolton laughing about it (you can google for J.D. Weatherspoons, and in the meantime, grow a sense of humour)

The police should simply have pulled them aside at the time, and escorted them back to their hotel with a laugh and a photo opp.

Would that be the same Poland....

Well done Atch - what I was trying to say, but you always do it better!

Judo? Tough lot, those Zaglebians...My wife was born there. And she was a college handball player. Those are two of Sos' favourite sports. Those, and drinking Mad Dogs.

Hang on - judo is not a sport. It is a discipline, isn't it?

It is not so easy.

"Attach files". Rule of thumb - if Dougpol can do it, it's foolproof.

Jerzy Kukuczka

Right kaprys:) And which beautiful Polish city is he from? Deffo Poland's greatest ever climber.

Sosnowiec, then guessing the name of the club is as easy as

Yes, I should know that. Spent 10 years working there - Sosnowiec, not the club! Rodin emoji......

Who is this Pawian and where is this mural to be found? This came up on PF before when Wulkan was dissing my shortish mountaineering expeditions of bygone days. Only for me they were more like drinking expeditions, as this high achiever was also inclined to do, albeit he was sportsman extraordinaire.

Thanks very bloody much jon. I've been ill for 2 weeks , and now you're making me even more ill with home-sickness and nostalgia. Our family never missed a year of driving up to Derbyshire to the well dressings at Tideswell, I think it was.... I remember I didn't care for the town itself, not as exciting as Matlock for instance, but there's nothing like well dressings here, unless you could compare the roadside shrines on Corpus Christi.

Life / What do decent Poles think about true rightists ? [148]

Yep. 5 Syrian lads run a couple of stalls in my local market. They are from Homs - which disproves the official nonsense about no immigrants from other EU states.

PS they speak very transactional Polish too.

Real Estate / Swiss Francs Mortgages in Poland [71]

Your Government

I know quite a few people here who have sued government institutions, whether it be hospitals, state employers, whatever. I told them not to bother, as they would get a big fat zero in damages in a subjective society that looks after its own.

I was right.

Handouts

Which your children will end up paying for. The country will bankrupt itself very quickly, and that's a given.
Answer: make plans to get the hell out of Poland if you are of a certain age.

Real Estate / Swiss Francs Mortgages in Poland [71]

Spilt my morning coffee....
Just another PIS idea - in that "We don't have any real policies to improve the economy, so what carrot haven't we tried yet?"

In the same way that I wasn't happy that the government was handing out money to uninsured home owners with a stunning riverside view (when, surprise, surprise, the river flooded). In the same way I wouldn't be happy paying out to home-owners who thought "Wow! This chance of mortgages in Swiss Francs is too good to be true!"

Can I join these schemes? My dog is a big one. I think I should be given a 50 zl handout every month to help me to feed him.

Law / Used Vehicle Bought in Poland - Registration Question [15]

Yes. Refer to my past comments. I am a British geezer living here for the last 27 years. Never, ever, buy a second hand car in Poland. Why?

1. People (wrongly) believe it is a seller's market and ask too much money ( around 30 percent) for their "recently repaired" car, and have a ridiculously false premise of its value.

2. Polish cars have been on Polish roads and are battered to fuckk.
3. Germany and other western countries are next door - where they sell their cars for real reasons ( taking up space/ want replacement etc etc) Buy there.

Hope this helps - not an opinion, but borne out from the above experience. Parts of 1 are paradoxically my own view - but I feel entitled, as prices are so laughable.

UK, Ireland / Mixed feelings after moving from Poland to England [36]

Where is that?

The chap pointed that out - near Rochdale somewhere...great real ales at 2.09 in J.D Weatherspoon and some of the best fish and chip shops in the world. Cheaper and better than the Tri-city offerings.

Life / Worst aspects of living in Poland? [82]

Well Sergiusz - if there were more people who were actually trying to modernise instead of acting like Lucrecia Borgia, then we wouldn't have to make Poland a special case.

As it is, when you actually know or are introduced to a Pole, your species is the most hospitable on the planet. On the streets and in the shops/airports etc - people are just plain stone-faced, making the daily grind bloody hard work for no apparent reason. So yes, Poland could improve itself, and I see your point - that we could be talking about Britain and it's yobbishness, and how to improve that. But this is a Polish forum, so we're talking about Polish "problems" and culture. Supposedly. Try telling Crow that.

Keeping a dog is a sign of Polish individualism

Keeping a dog means civic responsibilty, as with driving a car. Poland is no longer the wild East. You wanted capitalism - get with the programme.

Try to accept their culture

No ******* way - when they are guilty of cruelty to anim als by keeping them chained.
That's an archaic culture and those people deserve a beating.

do you know how to stop them barking at night?

It's a simple task to train your dog to stop barking when not wanted. The trouble here is that the bark is a warning bark, and is actively encouraged by the slob village/small town owners.

In a decent society there are noise abatement laws and councils to appeal to if the owner refuses/is too drunk too control his dog. If I had the misfortune to live in a Polish village I would fix it for the owner, and he wouldn't be able to prove a thing.

in a garden barking all night.

Yes. It's a massive risk buying a house here, just to be faced by incessantly barking dogs. I would gladly shoot the fokkers. And if this was America I would.

jaywalking abroad

Overstated Delph. In communist days ( 1988) I hiked a few times between Wisla and Jablunkow in the Beskidy in the then Czechoslovakia on a beer bender. I was never stopped.

Lysa Polana (entering SK)

That too was an easy workaround:) :) Got the photographic proof somewhere. Happy (alcoholic) memories of summer in Zdiar and those places. Met a gentleman bear too.

Law / Import non running project car to Poland [14]

So as far as I understand, All I need to pay is import duties

I don't think that's right....If you are going to import it, you have a month (as I remember) to register it. The point is in the "import". If you drive it here on Spanish plates it is not import, is it? Better ask somebody who does this for a living. It's that simple.

with Polish subtitles instead of English

Very good advice. I think that TV soaps such as Klan or AN Other are even better in some ways than film. Short 30 minute bursts with questions and imperatives. Conversational management.

on the enemy at the gates?

But Kaczynski and Ziobro are not on this forum? Maybe you don't who they are - but they are why investors are starting to get cold feet. Just take a look in Tesco and Lidl on your "next" visit. A pathetic selection of comestible goods, which tells the lie to Dirk's incessant ramblings about Polands' "booming" economy.

Law / Import non running project car to Poland [14]

What I havent figured out yet is if I need to pay tax when bringing it to mainland, or bringing it to Poland.

It's all connected with the engine capacity. My car was a 2 litre, so i paid 500 zl tax. If it were a 2.5 litre, the tax was in the thousands, apparently. Dunno, I got a legal company to do most of the paperwork for me - cost 200zl - the whole cost, plates, reg, import duties etc, total cost around 1,400 zl. (2013) I have no idea what this shower of a government has slapped on top as cost though.

It could be an idea to bring it to Poland on Spanish plates, and keep it like that. However, I do not know how legal that is.

You can of course bring a car registered in Spain, and return there every year for the MOT. If you register to live here you have 2 months or something of that time period to change the plates to Polish reg (obviously you could run the car for a year on Spanish plates before the reggo runs out)
