News / Poland's Economy Is Booming! The EU's Success Story? [711]

Please read my post on productivity and then come back and say you've understood. Ex communist countries = behind the old 'iron curtain' although this shouldn't really need explained to you.

News / Will EURO 2012 be a proud moment for Poland and its people or set back Poland 20 years? [86]

Its 99pln, one hour flight.

Hi Peter, try to book a 99pln flight.... the seats for those dates would have been 'blocked off' for the lower fares and so would never have been sold at 99pln!! epic fail!!! These people will be either taking a risk of the antiquated Polish railway (2 head on collisions in how many months?) or the unfinished Motorways (thanks to trusting the Chinese contracters, over inflated road material costs and the insular polish labour market)

Spain was never a hole... it was always comparable to parts of france, italy, the uk, ireland. Maybe they had a low wage economy but it was never a hole!

gdyniaguy: Polish workers are generally lazy and tend not to think outside of the box! But are cheap ;)
Write what you see not what you think. Thinking is not your forte obviously.

I live and work in Poland. They still havent got over the communist mentality were factory workers would sit playing cards all day. The have trumped up exam results, massive amount of public sector paper shufflers, indeed go to any branch of rtveuro and you have to have your purchase scanned and an invoice produce by one member of staff which is then taken to another. I have seen countless examples of bad workmanship especially in the dire state of roads and pavements (poles have never heard of compacting the hardcore and therefore all roads have cart-grooves).

In the UK we have a higher percentage of people in work so this whole the 'british are lazier' then the Poles doesn't wash with me. If a Pole is due to work 9-5 he starts at 9.05 and finishes at 4.55...in the UK we go in earlier and finish later. Unpaid overtime is the norm in the UK. Generally service in shops and restaurants is so slow that i usually take a pillow!

As for them being cheap!! why else do companies relocate here? 1) lower business taxes (condemned by the EU and 2) lower wages that are killing some other EU economies.

So you feel British when talking of the industrial revolution which took place 200 years ago, but you're not British anymore when it comes to Yalta and South African genocide, which happened 150 years later? That's a very convenient stance

Strzyga...another idiot blaming every English man for Yalta!!! (poles have this 'blame' everybody else culture! blame the russians, blame the germans, blame the jews, blame the english, blame the french...blame it on the sunshine, blame it on the boogie)

I can choose what to be proud of. Yalta wasnt my fault or my ancestors fault. Both of my grandads went to war against an enemy that was threatening another country. POLAND! he was 18 as went through 6 years of hell fighting against a nation that never threatened his village. The polish peole are quick to condemn yalta but on the other had what were the consequences? Maybe Churchill and the British people should have continued the fight against Russia until we were annihalated!! Get real... stop reading your history from your ex-communist school books! The Brits and the French were the only people to stand up against Hitler (apart from Poland) in 1939. What thanks did we get from the Poles that the German didn't wipe the Untermenschen off the face of the planet. I hope one day i can drag your sorry little arse to my grandad house and let him kick the crap out of you you ungrateful little (i wont type what i am thinking about you).

I know personally one of the leader of the Warsaw uprising who spent time in prison in the 50's and 60's (were he self learnt english) and he is thankful to the english people for helping Poland....

Whereas the industrial revolution was built on the sweat of not only foreigners but of 5-6 year old kids working their fingers to the bone in factories, down chimneys and under the ground in the UK... my ancestors. My ancestros made Britain Great and I've got nothing to be ashamed off.

Maybe you should ask questions of the Polish history... before questioning mine.

News / Polish children boosting standards among English pupils, study suggests [16]

In the UK immigrants are expected, and usually do, to integrate. There is no such thing as Polish ghettos in the UK and you would never identify an Anglo-Pole unless he told you his surname.

What are you going on about!

Really!! the blacks, pakistani's, indian's,jew's, chinese, brazilians. turks etc all have ghetto's in the UK. The UK goverment assist them by translating every piece of goverment paperwork into a multitude of languages. Poles are different as in the majority they arn't in the UK to live longterm, they are there just to make money so don't need to integrate.

Bet you Vote Liebour and think that multiculturism is wonderful!!

News / Poland's Economy Is Booming! The EU's Success Story? [711]

Fuzzy... Peter will come out with some statistical lie that will dispell all of what you have just said. Please be warned! 250 workers for how long... if they earn 2000zl a month now next year 2300zl and so on how long before they become too expensive. Add to that the fact that they will probably make 1/2 the amount of sets because low wages = low moral + low production. There is a reason why Nissan havn't moved all of their european producion here and a reason why GM are keeping production in Merseyside. Polish workers are generally lazy and tend not to think outside of the box! But are cheap ;)

Where have I professed 'dislike' for the British?
How do you know what religion I am?

A) You keep throwing replies into my take on my the Empire was beneficial.
b) If you're not Catholiic then i'm the Pope. ;)
c) if i dont interest you then stop replying to me! TOOL!! UNDERSTAND??? or are you TOO THICK?
d) I personally dont give a stuff about ireland or religion. After all, all religion is lies and a means to get money from stupid and vunerable people or brain wash them into commiting terrible things!

because my little list was just a few...if I had done the whole list I would have RSI by now.
I left Ireland off cos i don't ever get involved in discussions about it for family reasons.

So now we know... you dislike of the British then probably comes from your hatred of the Protestants!!! The whole Irish catholic/protestant argument is getting a bit wary now..

I'm protestant (english) my fiance is polish catholic
my dad was english catholic and my mother was english protestant
my grandad was english catholic and my gradmother was protestant
my great grandad was catholic (both in Kiltimagh, Ireland) and his wife a Scottish protestant.

We don't have a problem. My family grew up in an shipbuilding area in England which unlike Glasgow and Belfast managed to overthrow the shackles of Sectarianism.. people have moved on..the world has moved on....

Oh come on now, everyone is being a snarky cnut on this thread.
I'm not going to argue interpretation over what value he holds in personal experience but I am a bit surprised no one has responded to this (I wrote something similar in another thread):

Hi Foreigner...

An outsider cannot judge what is going on inside another country just by brandishing a few 'goverment' figures. Ask people form here in Poland where they are and ask about personal experiences and make your mind up from that. The Polish Government are adept at lying they have had 70 years of learning how to do it.

I live in Gdynia in one of the richest parts of Poland and have seen for myself the rise in Money lending shops, shops and restaurants closing down, i know people who have been serously long tem unemployed, i know a disabled guy who cant walk and cant claim a stitch in benefits, i see old people pushing trolly's filled with rubbish to see what they can earn of it, i see countless people begging outside of shops and churches, cars on the road to old and dangerous that shouldnt be there, i know of families that live in houses with 3-4 other families in crowded conditions, i too have been to villages devoid of anybody under the age of 30... i see countless new housing developments that will never be filled as those who are working arnt earning enough for the smallest of mortgages. A new 3 bed house in Puck is about 300,000zl or about 2,500 a month on a mortgage.... how many unskilled cheap factory workers being hired by the likes of LG can afford that!!!

But then again Poland is booming!

certain British philanthropists you mean. Bristol and Liverpool were built on the slave trade, as were the fortunes of the Tate family (tate gallery)
Get real Gdynia Guy.

Whatever and who ever they were British! Are you one of these people who think that all people should pay for the sins of their parents/grand parents! My great grandfather was Irish and came to the UK due to famine! I noticed that you ommited Ireland from the list of countries! Is there a reason??

The top and bottom of it is that the UK and the British people created the world that we live in through the Empire and through the industrial revolution. Just about everything you see and use which helps your daily life was thought of in the mind of a British subject. I've got everything to be proud of being British...Yalta and the genocide in South Africa has zip all to do with me!

News / Poland's Economy Is Booming! The EU's Success Story? [711]

umm..are you sure? ..Somalia? (British Somaliland) Nigeria? Sierra Leone? Sudan? Eritrea? Pakistan? Iraq?

Somalia was under british control for how long? Has applied for membership of the Commonwealth, Nigeria.. the British were instrumental in stamping out the slave trade.. the other problems with nigeria came well after they became independant. Still a member of the Commonwealth, Sierra Leone..we must have really p'd them off..after all the independant Sierra Leone are still members of the Commonwealth, Sudan hated us so much that the send the SDF to aid British Soldiers against the Italians during World War 2. Has applied for membership of the Commonwealth. Need i go on? Iraq really??

It's funny for Imperialist Britain that controlled and decimated these contries for so long but the majority of them are still either Members of the British Commonwealth or have applied to be members. As i've said before all countries have made mistakes in the past including Polands love affair of siding with the wrong side. We British have made ammends and the people of the contries of the old Empire still regard us with some fondness.

Yachts and boats, for one.
It's a Polish gov. promotional site, but you're free to check other sources

Really??? I cant name 1 polish yacht building company and i live in Gdynia!!! as for boat building the Polish goverment has been threatened with action on numerous occasions regarding state handouts to the Polish shipyards (i know this i live in gdynia) they disregard this (SAME A COAL POLLUTION). It's about time that the EU start enforcing fines. Malev airlines in Hungary went out of business for the same thing.

News / Poland's Economy Is Booming! The EU's Success Story? [711]

You mean stealing resources from conquered lands. Yes, i think any country could grow very rich by acting in such a way.

If stealing from conquered lands made you rich then Italy would be one of the richest countries and the planet! So naive!!!

Check out the Commonwealth and take a look at the old British Empire countries. The old saying was that 'the sun never set on the Empire'. Take a good hard look and apart from Zimbabwe and failing South Africa every 'conquered' country feeds it's own people, has a good infrastructure and stable governments. You can't tar British Imperialism with the same brush as the Russians, Italians or the French who's old colonies have suffered famine since. Maybe if Queen Victoria would have conquered Poland and they wouldn't have been in the mess that they've been in for 80 years.

If you look at the Commonwealth (about 1/3 of the worlds population!) and you will see a thriving community not like the farce that is the EU.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Member_states_of_the_Commonwealth_of_Nations

Take a look at this link and at the bottom you'll see NEW nations wanting to be a part of the Commonwealth.

News / Poland's Economy Is Booming! The EU's Success Story? [711]

Poland isn't the UK. The Uk is a top 5 economy, Poland is 20. Comparing it is ridiculous, it will take another 10-20 years before Poland has moved to Western European standards or living

The Worlds in a recession caused by cheap credit and companies opting for cheap (and shoddy) workers taking jobs!

It has taken 100's of years for the UK to develop it's economy from the beginnings of the Empire and the Industrial revoultion to the great inventors and inventions (even now we invent the internet and design the iphone)...Poland will take much longer then 20 years to be anywhere near the UK economy. In fact it probably never will. What you fail to understand is that the UK's economy invests overseas and income from this investment help the UK economy. The UK goverment and companies also invest in 'R and D' and cooperate within the UK with some of the finest Universities and Colleges.

The UK make 'high value' and 'luxury' goods that are exported worldwide and is in competition with the like of Germany whereas Polish owned manufacturers produce cheap goods for use at home (dairy produce, doors and windows). You can't create a brand image the likes of Rolls Royce, BOE or clothing manufacturers like Barbour overnight. Off the top of your head name me 10 Polish things that are exported and sold abroad by foreign consumers? (not foodstuff bought by expat poles and you'll say vodka but in the UK polish vodka is unheard of)

Poland invest zilch outside of Poland and by the time the Polish wage levels get anywhere near to the UK then you'll see two things... jobs returning to the west of europe from Poland and Polish GDP and economy taking a nosedive. They'll never hit the standards of UK, Germany, France, Holland etc...

One last thing...Poland can be summed up in one sentence...

Poland is Europes biggest apple producer and producer of apple juice but doesn't make cider!!! i rest my case!

Hi Hipis

What you fail to understand is the amount of foreign investment that the UK has abroad. Unlike Poland. Dyson sell the VACS worldwide and have a head office and research facilities in the UK. As for Supermarket in the UK three of the big '4' are UK owned and run and Probably make up for 10 times the market then Polish owned supermarkets here. I've never said that Britains economy is booming but if we take away the subsidy to the EU and especially Poland the economy would be a little 'better off'!

News / Poland's Economy Is Booming! The EU's Success Story? [711]

Of course Polish people are better off then 20 years ago. We all are!!! Look at the Irish 20 years ago and look at them now, look at the Greeks 20 years ago and now! The rise in GDP doesn't mean squat if you can't work.

I tell me Polish collegues that in the 70's and 80's in the UK we had shops brimming with all the riches that we could possible want but not a pound in our pockets to buy them. My father and mother (an engineer and a nurse) in the late 60's and early 70's went without meals to feed the kids...but at times then the UK was booming! And we all know what happens after a boom.

In Gdynia there is a monstrosity of a tower block 'sea towers' which is 2/3 empty... there are a lot of building programs and developments that are standing half empty, alot of empty shops and businesses closing...boom my arse! Banks and business that arn't 'state controlled' are being bought up by foreign companies left, right and centre.

The Supermarkets are on a whole foreign owned Beidronka, Tesco, Auchan, Netto, Carrefour, Spar, Intermarche, Bomi! Peterweg...you tell me how a country can survive and by allegidly successfull when the majority of it's earnings are going back out of the country? Polish people don't invest outside of Poland, they tend to on the whole be very insular when it comes to business with foreginers unless it's a handout!

Polands economy is built on cheap labour, free handouts and easy access to Germany..nothing else... take away one of these 3 things and the whole house of cards will fall.

Food / Where to buy British mature Cheddar Cheese and salted butter in Poland? [289]

Real sell English Chedder I can't stand the lumps of rubber that passes off as cheese in Poland I yearn for a decent Stilton.

Tesco sell english bread a bit like Asda's tiger bread. Bomi have a small selection on English beers.. and apart from the lack of a 'real' breakfast sausage the rest i can manage with Polish produce.

News / Poland's Economy Is Booming! The EU's Success Story? [711]

Peterweg

Iceland defaulted on its debts (like greece should do) and then started again with a level playing field. Sex with animals... really? grow up!

The Euro was always going to fail, so many goverments singing from different hymn sheets all using the same currency with no option to alter the value of their currency to stimulate trade and growth. The only country to really benefit from the Euro are the Germans. Only an idiot would still think that the single european currency is a good thing. There was a reason why currencies the likes of Spain, Italy and Ireland were shite before the Euro. The Irish Punt was always linked near enough to the Pound but the Irish economy was always like the poorest part of the UK. The PIGS nations were gerrymandered into the EURO in order that the Germans could shift German-goods easier. The pool people in these countries are now being stiffed by an ideal that would never work.

The UK may lose a little from this whole debarcle but as the UK has it's own currency which is unlinked to the farce of the EU then the GBP can be devalued to stimulte growth should it be needed. Poland on the other hand has it's own currency (which has dropped from 4.50 to the pound to 5.4 to the pound this year) so therefore doesn't have the flexibility to devalue to stimulate any more growth and inflation is on an upwards spiral. Added to that Poland is too linked into Europe (free cash!!) and the 'whole brotherhood of the USSR of Europe'. If Europe fails Poland fails.

Life / Let`s compare prices of services and products in Poland [359]

Spiderpig...

Be careful the Poles will use Euro2012 to try to make a quick buck from anybody. I live here and have been ripped of on more then on occassion... a few tips...

Phone cards... if you use pay as you go in a smart phone beware...it will cost you a fortune...you will fine no literature in english

Taxis.... learn the basic good day etc... and when you get in the taxi say good day and then the name of the street that the hotel is on... not the hotel... they will rip you off royally if they know your not local...they make london cabies look like saints.

bus tickets.... make sure you stamp them once on the bus/tram etc....or they'll fine you..

green man at traffic lights... only walk on green...red is an instant fine... you can only cross on green and beware the poles have a stupid systmen that drivers can cross the same time as you.. (no wonder the poles are the worst drivers in europe)

Never pay more then 7-10zl for a beer!! a take 7km (3 miles) about 30-35zl.

good luck

News / Will EURO 2012 be a proud moment for Poland and its people or set back Poland 20 years? [86]

Peter

How far is Gdansk from Krakow.... what will the spanish, italians, czech and irish do to get between the two? A 2 hour flight??? a 7 hour drive??? Fail!!!

Hipis

25 years of following football around Europe and attending the various championships! .....

Stop comparing Poland to other European countries the imfrastructure is the pits! I've been to Germany, France, Austria and so on the believe me Poland has nothing to compare to them in terms of tourism.

Honour and Hooligans! really??? The English invented the football hooligan... granny, suck, eggs! If there isnt 1 bit of polish inspired trouble during euro 2012 ill eat my own arse.

'So have I and I've seen a hell of a lot of crap in Spain. Spain was a bit of a hole before it joined the EU back in the 80s and they've done pretty well out of the EU funds which have helped restore many of their crumbling cities, building new motorways, airports etc. Poland is still recovering from 45 years of a Russian puppet government (thanks to your government of the day) and has only been in the EU 8 years. Kraków, Wrocław and Gdansk have beautifully restored old towns so even if people don't venture outside those cities there's more for them to see and do than the likes of Newcastle, Sheffield, Manchester and Liverpool did back in 1996.'

so you knowledge of north english tourism as you say....Is this a fact according to you or a just rubbish attributed to a genuine study into the habits of tens of millions of tourists? the UK gets about 30 millions visitors a year and you'd be aive to thing that 100% of them stay in the south east...york, lincoln, newcastle, edinburgh, liverpool are all massive tourist hotspots Poland get a total of about 15million and has how many land neighbours?? fail

Really...Spain was never a hole. (epic fail!!!) and obviously you spent alot of time up north in 1996! I've lived in Poland for three years and probably seen everything worth seeing..really nothing special (zakopane (boring), salt mines!!, upside down house, rebuilt original german-built town squares and castles (covered in grafitti), foka's in hel....it's really is riveting) In fact the only thing that tourists come to see is the Holocaust in Poland....I've taken about 70 flights in the last 3 years to and from Poland and only ever met one tourist couple...says it all. By the way. I've struggled to scratch the surface of UK tourist hot spots.
