Language / Use of A/An/The ...... Articles [186]

"One small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind" but instead said "One small step for man, one giant leap for mankind"

This will be off topic and will be most likely deleted by our mods, but your example reminded me of JFK, when he went to Berlin. To express his unity with the city he said "Ich bin ein Berliner". Berliner used without the article would mean the inhabitant of Berlin, however using it with ein refers to some local kind of jelly doughnut.

M, it's still 'a' in that case. It's like 'następnym razem', another time (meaning one other time in the future, czyli 'a'). We say 'a hard time'.

Thank you. Have a good class.

Language / Use of A/An/The ...... Articles [186]

A woman, any woman (general but referring to the collective whole)

So the key is to avoid singular for generalizations?

I know the rules better in German, and over there if you generalize in Singular, you don't use any article. Does it apply in English?

I have a hard time choosing is correct. We think about the one time that you are experiencing difficulty.

How about "I always have (a?) hard time choosing my outfits".

This is a very easy example. You basically point to the tiger. However I always struggle with abstracts and generalizations.

Like:
I have hard time choosing...

or

I have a hard time choosing...?

An exaple for generalizations:

A woman should be nice and friendly

or
Woman should be nice nice and friendly?

Po polsku / Amerykańskie chamstwo? [133]

Nikt nie wie, jak by wyglądała teraz Polska, gdyby wówczas podjęto inne decyzje. To jest gdybanie.

Wystarczy spojrzec na wschodnie Niemcy i widac, co by sie stalo gdyby wszyscy ktorzy byli blisko zwiazani z komuna zostali odsunieci i zastapieni. Czyli nic by sie nie stalo.

Love / I was late and this Polish girl flipped out [36]

When she met me she flipped out and told me that she had no time for me.

That could be your clue: she only saw your picture online. Maybe she didn't like what she saw in person?
Maybe next time you should put a note in your profile that you are 5'4", or that you have a lisp, or that your picture is 10 years old?

Niesty musimy spojrzec prawdzie w oczy: kultura przegrala".

Life / Struggling young Polish couple - try to solve their problem [176]

Or if it's really unbearable with the parents maybe they should consider renting a 2 bedroom with another couple? They are young, childless and in love. Lots of my friends did that right after getting married and finishing school.

I would take the practical road: stay with the parents for 2-3 more years. That lets them save a lot of money. If the parents are bothering them too much (although I'm sure the parents are inconvenienced by them staying in their house too), they should just go for long walks or go camping on the weekends. I would work my a$$ off and learn whatever there is to learn at their jobs and then look for a better paying position. With higher earnings and the savings from not paying rent they will probably get a loan and be able to save up for a good down payment.

Travel / Things to see along eastern Poland by bicycle [42]

If you still have any suggestions about scenic places and good routes to take, they are still greatly appreciated!

kruk.ovh.org/Trasy/trasa2a_kazik.htm

Here you will find the trail I talked about in my first post: a trail between Kazimierz, Naleczow and Lublin. If you bike from Augustow towards Lublin, you should get on the trail in Kazimierz and continue to Lublin. I've hiked in some of the places on the trail and the nature really beautiful. And Kazimierz and Naleczow are lovely small towns. And the trail takes you right to Skansen (the village museum).

Life / $3,000-$4,000 a month - would we have enough money to live in Poland? [273]

Sorry to hear the bad news from you, the health problems and the death in the family. (I haven't been too much on the forum lately). I'm crossing my fingers for your complete recovery. And I do hope the life of your family will settle. Whether it's just moving to a new house or a new country, getting used to everything takes time. I still admire you guys for taking the step.

and finally toward Lublin.

I would say the nicest towns in the Lublin area are Kazimierz Dolny and Naleczow. Once you are in Lublin there is a nice open air museum of old village buildings (Skansen). I like it a lot. Close to the museum there is a Botanical Garden. It's very pretty in the summer time. And of course you should visit the old town in Lublin.

I haven't done much biking in Poland, but I can image it could be tricky. The roads in the Eastern Poland aren't that good. They are narrow and people drive fast. You can never be too careful.

History / What was it like in 1989+ in Poland when the Soviet house of cards fell? [237]

I still don't understand how the East Germans made it to West Germany via Poland.

Hungary opened it's border to Austria. The East Germans travelled to Hungary (through Poland) then to Austria and then to West Germany.

(Never mind; I haven't noticed Gumishu's post.)

History / What was it like in 1989+ in Poland when the Soviet house of cards fell? [237]

Not really. The old prices stayed in thousands and millions, the new prices were 4 zeros less. So for example you would have two prices for each item listed, like e.g a cup of yogurt would be 2 PLZ or 20,000PLZ in the old money. The stores would give you your change in the new money, so it took much shorter than a year to get the old money out of circulation.

what year, more or less, was this? what accounted for the sudden drop?

It was mid nineties. The denomination. All prices stayed the same except we had to remove 4 zeros. For a year or so we had the old PLZ (Polish Zloty) and the new PLZ in circulation. It was quite a treat to get the coins back. I thought back then that they were very good looking, 5 PLZ being my favorite coin. With the old currency nobody bothered with coins. They had literally no value.

History / Poland's biggest historical blunder? [341]

Yap, and Kant happens to be German. Coincidence? ;)

Except he never lived to see the mess of the 20th century.

Marshall plan was for Germans help, yes, but a strong West German prooved to be necessary against the USSR and its satelites. That was the main goal.

Yes to all that, but it supports Kant's theory that a desperate county is a threat to peace. If the hunger and poverty situation was left unattended, who knows, maybe the communists would gain too much power and we would have had just one socialist German country.

History / Poland's biggest historical blunder? [341]

why did they let off the reparations?

According to Kant, a nation that was defeated and destroyed in war needs possibilities to rebuilt and reinvent itself. If that possibility is denied, there is a new war threat. When you look at the Weimarer Republik, it was a very unruly place. The poverty and the split in the workers movement were a great opportunity for someone like Hitler to become a dictator, even before Hitler became a household name. And yes, peace was the topic of the day, therefore the western countries tried to help Germany get on it's feet. It was also one of the motivations for Marshall Plan after the WWII was over.

Raczej do Polski.

UK, Ireland / How to set up a charity in the UK? [20]

Unfortunately I don't know much about English rules. I live in the States, and the girl I'm talking about registered a non-profit, created a business plan and and she is getting the money from some state and private grants.

I actually meant for you to set up a non-profit and employ yourself, and pay yourself a salary. I know someone, who set up a runaway shelter and she runs the organization as her full time job and pays herself a salary.

Wezcie sobie dajcie siana z tymi stereotypami.
