News / How Polish diaspora see future of Poland? as ethnic Polish state or just Polish in origin? [120]

You do realise that Pilsudki's plan miserably failed and caused the destruction of the II RP?

The Second Republic did fall, but Nazi Germany and Soviet Russia were its destroyers. If you think Piłsudski's plan for Slavic unity was the main cause of the Second Republic's fall then you are very deluded.

You mean the plan which featured Lithuania (not Slavic), Latvia (not Slavic), Estonia (not Slavic), Finland (not Slavic), Belarus, Ukraine, Hungary (not Slavic), Romania (not Slavic), Yugoslavia (only partly Slavic) and Czechoslovakia? More non-Slavic nations than Slavic ones?

Yes I mean that plan which proposed unifying several Slavic states along with several other Non-Slavic states. It was thus a plan for Slavic unity. I never said it was a plan for exclusively Slavic unity.

And did not feature by far the largest Slavic nation?

Yes, and Piłsudski had good reasons for this omission. It was not a plan for absolute Slavic unity but a plan for Slavic unity nonetheless.

News / How Polish diaspora see future of Poland? as ethnic Polish state or just Polish in origin? [120]

I love the way that the Polish diaspora in America attempts to tell native Poles (who were born Polish, who breathe Polish air and who will be buried in Polish soil) what they should and shouldn't do!

I will tell Poles, and everyone else on Earth, not to believe in slippery slope fallacies.

The whole concept of "Slavic Unity" is firmly rooted as a Russian concept, nothing more.

Please see the link posted above (#40) for a summary of the Pole, Piłsudski's, plan for Slavic unity and be disabused of your notion that such plans are "nothing more" than Russian.

Mods?

Hahahaha, if you don't like your statements being critiqued then perhaps you should avoid public discussion forums. I asked you two questions. Either answer them or refrain, but I suggest you avoid crying for the mods unless you enjoy looking like a ninny.

To many people in Poland, calling for "Slavic unity" is treasonous at best.

Hahahaha, "at best" really and what would it be "at worst"? Do you even read what you write or do you not have the time because it would impede your gushing flood of drivel?

Or have you forgotten that there are millions of people in Poland who suffered under Communism in some way and do not want to embrace any ideas of "Unity" with other Slavs?

These people should understand that the failed system of Soviet Communism is not the model of Slavic unity any sane person is advocating, and that claims that any attempts to unify the Slavs would necessarily result in Soviet Communism are fallacious.

Life / You are Polish if... [433]

Let's see...it was a bit of a mess for around 200 years between the 12th and 14th centuries, divided and weak. It was subject to plenty of invasions, too - it wasn't "strong".

Poland was invaded but she wasn't "conquered" during these years.

we started to see the Commonwealth fall apart by the mid 17th century, and the 18th century was well, not a happy time.

Poland had her problems during this period but remained an unconquered nation until the latter part of the 18th century.

You will not admit that overall Poland has been a weak nation throughout history constantly being conquered by others

Wrong, Poland was a strong nation from the 10th century to the latter half of the 18th century. That is over 700 years of strength. Claiming Poland was constantly being conquered by others when for three quarters of her existence she was conquering others shows that EM Wave doesn't know what he is talking about and Seanus' claim that other than EM Wave's remarks about soccer's merits and the popularity of techno music:

There is a fair bit of truth in the rest of what you said.

shows that he too is ignorant regarding Polish history.

DE, please don't embarrass yourself anymore than you really need to. You're close to your quota

Seanus you with your 30,000 posts, that include idiotic claims such as the one above about imperial Britain being "isolated," apparently have no quota.

USA, Canada / Where do most Polish-Americans identify on the political spectrum? [142]

Imagine stepping off the boat in Ellis Island and being asked where you're from. You're a Lemko, but you're aware that they're not going to know what a Lemko is - and you certainly don't identify with the oppressors in Vienna - so you become Polish.

Even if some Lemkos told and Ellis Island official that they was Polish that hardly makes it certain that the Lemkos would also tell their children that they are solely plain Polish and never mention their Lemko heritage, Two of my Great-Grandparents were Gorale and they considered themselves both Polish and Gorale. The two are not mutually exclusive, nor is Polish and Lemko. This belief that minority ethnicities from Poland would initially deny their specific ethnic heritage because they felt that an official at Ellis Island wouldn't be familiar with it, and then, since they had told an official they were just "plain" Polish, that they would subsequently keep their more specific Polish ethnicity a secret from their progeny is ridiculous. Delphiandomine has constructed a fallacious straw-man in hopes of casting doubt upon the Polishness of Polish-Americans. Why he would want to cast such doubt is up to this forum's readers to decide, but I am sure that the more seasoned of them understand why very well and that they laugh at such pathetic malice upon his part.

The British Isles enjoyed splendid isolation up to 1902

Wrong, Britain was engaged in imperialist enterprizes around the globe both before and after 1902. That is not "isolation" nor was it "splendid" especially for all the innocent non-British people brutalized by the greedy rulers of those islands and their craven British minions.

History / Polish painting.....Jan Matejko's titled "Under Arrest" [16]

Des claims to be knowledgeable about all things Polish,

This is a lie. I have never claimed this.

he talks constantly about such issues without being able to spot the agenda behind it.

This is another lie. I did indeed suspect that the story of this painting's continued "arrest" was a falsehood put forward by rightwing Polonian media and thus I asked the members of this forum to investigate it and Boletus kindly obliged. Thank you Boletus. Delphiandomine you are a liar.

News / What part of Poland's image do you think is the most exportable? [90]

the OP

Asks what items from Poland would best sell in a shop in New York City. Niether Polish resorts nor Polish landscapes are viable items for such a shop because they are not exportable. Images of Polish landscapes and resorts are exportable but I doubt a shop dealing exclusively in pictures of hotels and landscapes would be viable. Perhaps you are suggesting the thread starter open a travel agency. If so you need to state that more clearly.

DE, I can forgive your lack of English understanding.

Seanus you are the one who doesn't understand what this thread is about, and your pretentious offer of "forgiveness" makes you look even more idiotic.

As a teacher

I pity your students.

USA, Canada / Where do most Polish-Americans identify on the political spectrum? [142]

This thread isn't about understanding Poland. It is about understanding the politics of people in America that are of Polish descent.

Delph makes a good point! You have to live and experience the repercussions of political decisions here. Conventional spectral labelling isn't so clear cut.

No, he makes an off-topic post and Seanus adds another off-topic post of encouragement for his fellow English teacher who is trashing yet another thread because of his bitterness about the existence of Polonia.

What are a couple of bitter British weirdos doing on this thread anyway? They are not speaking about Polish-Americans political leanings. This thread is about Polish-Americans but these fools won't even admit that they exist.

This thread isn't about Polish people. It's about Americans. Poles in America do not have the vote unless they become citizens and the last generation to do that en-masse have mostly passed away.

If you dont believe that Polish-Americans exist then you shouldn't be on this thread.

And though there are some virtues in what we see, sexy and cool are not among them.

So you will admit that Poles have some virtues but not those two. I suppose you think Poles should count themselves lucky that a person from the enlightened West deigns to grant them even that, but let me tell you that you are making an utter fool of yourself generalizing about a nation of millions of people like that. You are a bigot and you should be ashamed of yourself.

Better to be who you are than try to be who your great-granny was.

Wow what a stupid off-topic statement. You really should read the rules of this forum before you make such inane posts. I suppose that like another bitter British expatriate, whose off topic posts may also be read above, you are claiming that Polish-Americans should deny their families' origins in Poland. Why do you want them to do this? I suspect it's because you don't want too many people proud of being Polish to come on to this forum so that you and your pathetic pals can post your patronizing Polonophobic garbage in peace. You shan't have it. Not for x-mas and not ever. Jihad Polonia!

Which simply isn't marketable in NYC. this is why I'm asking in the first place. T-shirts with writing on it and subject matter that only Poles understand?

Not T-Shirts, Fuzzywickets, posters, and people are not put off by foreign text in a beautifully designed poster as is evinced by the many French language posters to be found in American homes. I attended an exhibit of Polish posters at a local museum, which you can read about in the first link provided in post #7 of this thread, and believe me when I say that if Toulouse-Lautrec's poster art can sell so well in America then so can the supremely clever poster art of the Polish school.

nasty Des, why, from what I have seen I could describe your country as being full of banjo playing inbreds and people that are so fat they can hardly walk. But I wouldn't, because that would be silly..;)

I was just trying to fight fire with fire, rozumiemnic. I know Britain isn't exclusively full of ugly pasty creeps. I just wanted to turn the tables on this forum's Polonophobic British posters.

Believe me it's like saying na antypodach (on antipodes) instead of Australia.

I wonder if this is accurate for Poland. Would anyone with access to a globe be so kind as to figure out what region of the Earth is antipodal to Poland? The word is from the Greek meaning foot to foot.

Edit: Nevermind I figured it out. It is the area in, and around, the Falkland Islands, and not Australia

posters of what?

The subject of the posters may be of almost anything. In most cases it would be the clever design of the posters that the purchaser would value.

also, what makes these posters "Polish"?

Being created by Polish people and usually containing Polish text.

UK, Ireland / Is the UK referred to as the Islands in Polish media back home? [62]

I know technically the British Isles are islands, but in the traditional sense, people refer to islands that are much smaller geographical bodies such as the canary islands or the Caribbean :P

Put your emoticon tongue back in your mouth and get a clue. Great Britain is both "technically" and traditionally referred to as a group of islands and the Caribbean is the name of a sea.

History / Polish painting.....Jan Matejko's titled "Under Arrest" [16]

The painting in question is not titled "Under Arrest" but rather Hold Ruski. It depicts Tsar Vasili IV of Russia and his siblings kowtowing and surrendering the Russian crown to King Sigismund III of Poland on October 29th 1611, in the Royal Castle of Warsaw. During the decades of Soviet domination of Poland it was forbidden to be shown and this is understandable given the virulent Russian nationalism of the Soviet regime, but the following article claims this painting is still "under arrest": poloniacenter.com/cgi-bin/mdsb/mail.cgi/archive/PolishEventsDC/20111030184310

Is this really true?

Life / 90th Birthday Celebration for my Polish grandmother - any ideas? [5]

Since the traditional Polish happy birthday song is stolat which expresses the wish that the person whose birthday it is lives to be one-hundred years old, and your Busia only has ten years to go until she becomes a centenarian, and the Roman numeral for ten is "X", and "X" is slang for MDMA, you should have a rave with lots of pills and trippy house music.
