Life / Is Poland a poor country? [578]

You can find weekly rates for most western style hotels.

Out of curiosity what's "eastern style hotel" and how it differs from "western style hotel"???

Life / ATTENTION DRIVERS POLAND INTRODUCES NEW ROAD SIGNS! [15]

They're jokes, right?

Yes they are jokes. Some people are altering road signs and authorities call it vandalism but I think some of these altered signs are funny.

The first and last have theological connections?

The first one is "Priests crossings" and the last one is "Caution-priest pedophile".

Life / Is Poland a poor country? [578]

You could stay for a week at an okey-dokey hotel (i.e. Etap) for $115, in Poland.

No way dude.At least 90-100 PLN a night and that makes a bit over $200.

Really but how nice would that hotel be?

2 stars.

Travel / Where to meet English speaking teenagers in Warsaw? [15]

i miss speaking normal english and talking with people, like, you know, that know what life is all about

I think the whole problem is that they are coming here (Poland) unprepared, meaning that they don't speak any Polish and that makes them pretty much handicaped like.As much as I understand their feelings I can't understand their expectations that people in Poland will speak English.Being Polish and living in the US among Americans (when in the US I don't speak Polish except for when I am on Skype with my mother) I can refer to their predicament because I remember when it was like to don't understand conversation and the feeling of alienation. But now I am equally comfortable in both English and Polish speaking enviroments. To sum up,if someone wants to live in Poland he/she must be prepared to speak Polish.

Get a grip, its his native language,he wants to speak it out loud with mates for a change.

I think he just wants to speak to someone as I doubt he speaks any Polish and even if many Polish people speak some English very few is acctualy able to handle a conversation unless they work in tourist industry as it's all about using language daily.

Life / Is Poland a poor country? [578]

Poland is the 25th RICHEST country in the world according to the world statistics.

Polish love complaining more than anything else, that is why such absurd question...

"If you ain't first,you last"-Reese Bobby
This is how we roll.Complaing and whinning doesn't cost a penny and even if Poland was the richest country in the whole Universe I would still be whinning and ******** if there was something I wouldn't like about Poland.

Travel / Need a Guide to the Polish history and culture, I'm from Finland [27]

Exactly, so let's leave it at Eastern Europe then... ;)

Why not?Yeah, I know that "Eastern Europe" is associated with poverty and backwardness, this kind of stuff. But,in reality it doesn't matter.I find it silly that some Poles object when someone calls Poland an Eastern European country because if Poland was rich or super rich country nobody would care wheter foraigners call it Eastern,Central or Western as it doesn't change a bit what Poland really is.Asia overall is pretty poor but I don't think any Japanese have a problem with foraigners calling Japan an Asian country. You see what I am saying?

Love / Polish wife is threatening me to pay child support 1000zl per month. [40]

You dont to be a us citizen to make that kinda money even pumping gas or doing const work u can make 3k a month ($)

This is off topic but you can not make $3k pumping gas working 40 hours a week,I don't care who you are.

1000zl a month is cheap.

1000 PLN is very reasonable. My cousin pays 2000 PLN voluntarilly.

Don't you see the first and foremost problem here, that the court told the guy to pay 1000zl when he earns 750zl on paper?

They never went to court.1000 PLN is what the mother wants from him.Geez.And you expect court to give him custody rights when he makes 750 PLN "on paper"?Seriously?

News / Work begins on 'Polish Disneyland' [37]

our theme parks bigger than your theme park, nah nah nah nah nah!!!!

Oh yeah? But we have a statue of Jesus bigger than any statue of Jesus you have!Huh,what you say about that?

I still think Poland should do a theme park of "Biblical" proportions

Absolutely! We can not allow Brits to have a theme park bigger than ours.

Imagine a roller-coaster through Dante's Inferno, a ghost train through limbo, a bar at purgatory, Jan Pawel T=shirts and lollipops all round.

Sweet!

History / Did British public protest against the sell out of Poland to the Soviets? [286]

Would they have been more or less likely to fight if Poland had said they could count on support from Poland?

Oh,so now it's Poland's fault that the Czechs are cowards and cowardly caved in to German demands and gave their land away without a single shot fired? Is this what you are trying to say?And why do think that Poland was in any way obligated to give them any help when they did not allow Hungarian transports with help for Poland when Poland was fighting Soviets to pass thru Czechoslovakia?

Polish dressed in German uniforms who'd have thought it!

Helmet is not a uniform.

History / Did British public protest against the sell out of Poland to the Soviets? [286]

c) Poland had already agreed that the land in question was part of Czechoslovakia and had signed an international treaty to that effect (yet another treaty which interbellum Poland broke as and when it suited them).

Poland did not break any treaty because Czech government GAVE Zaolzie to Poland.

History / Did British public protest against the sell out of Poland to the Soviets? [286]

one has to doubt that the Polish public protested at the time against the sell out of Czechoslovakia to the Nazis and their own army taking part in the Nazi invasion of Czechoslovakia.

"Sell out"?Dude, you are totally ignorant about Polish-Czech relations in years 1918-1938.What do you mean by "sell out"?Poland did not have any pact with Czechoslovakia so how could Poles sell them out?And besides,it's not like Czechs were going to fight Germans anyway so I don't any reason why Poland wouldn't take land inhabited by Polish population which Czechs were going to GIVE AWAY to the Germans.

Harry the Poles probably omit to teach their kids about that disgraceful part of their history.

Disgraceful? Not at all.We only took back what Czechs stole from us when we were busy fighting Soviets 20 years earlier.Nothing disgracefull about it.

Nice helmets!

You mean on the 2nd picture?World War I German/Austrian helmets. In 1939 one unit (10th cavalry brigade) of Polish army was still equiped with this model.

Life / New in Poland! Not yet jaded and loving it [34]

whats your trade/profession?

Graduate of Lodz University, major banking.Did few odd jobs in the US.Lately had a small (3 vans) taxi company in Ocean City MD but sold it and during housing boom was working for a plumbing company in MD/DE as a quality inspector (testing and punch out).

If you don't mind me asking how long have you been back in Poland and hows it going?

For almost 6 months, curing the depression I fell into in the States.I would like to stay in Poland but I have a big problem with the system/government here and I am not going to support it in any way.Poland itself is not bad (of course I am biased as I grew up here) but could be much better.

How long were you in the states for?

Since 2004.Going back there within the next 2 weeks and moving from Delmarva to Illinois.Have to go back to school to get American diploma and hoping to get a job with some bank in Chicago (as it is easy to start there because they are looking for Polish speaking tellers) or at Chicago Mercantile Exchange.

About a quarter of the Poles I met in London/South East did not speak any better English than I speak Polish.

Only a quarter is not bad if we take into account the number of Poles in the UK and the fact your government make it easy for foraigners (not only Poles) to get things done in their native language, though personally I don't think I could ever live in a country where I am not able to comunicate with natives in their language. It's like being handicaped,me thinks.

Give it time grubas, you'll soon be seeing the fruits of life in the UK from your fellow Poles back during the holidays and driving around in there nice UK plated cars.

Very few of those in town of Sieradz but I have seen some. Many more nice cars are PL plated yet everyone is saying that they don't have any money.

I should think you could do quite well for yourself in the UK,

Yeah, maybe but I am being put off by the anti Polish sentiment in the UK which I can understand but don't really feel like dealing with.Sure in the US from time to time I meet a person trying to talk down to me because I am a foraigner but that doesn't happen often and is compensated by Americans who make me feel very welcomed.I have met tons of Americans insisting that now I am an American because I live in the US,store clerks asking where am I from and then telling me "God bless you and thank you for coming to the US",girls from High Leigh college telling me that they apologize if someone ever gave me a hard time for being a foraigner and so on.Maybe it's because I am a cool dude but I doubt that would ever happen in the UK or maybe I am wrong as I have never really been in the UK.Also it would probably take me some time to switch from Amglish to English not to mention accent. In the US I already reached the level of proficiency where I am being understood and don't have to repeat myself when trying to get things done over the phone.

Work / Working in Lodz - work without speaking Polish? [25]

maybe in the 80's. it isn't anymore.

So now you are an expert on Lodz too?A lot must have changed since last week because last week it looked depressing and neglected.Apart from parts of Piotrkowska and Pilsudskiego thye rest of city centre looks like Sarajevo after siege. And you are wrong about 80's too,Lodz looked much better in the 80's.

It's a really vibrant and up and coming city with excellent transport throughout.

Are you sure you are in Lodz?I am asking because Lodz is the most depressing and most neglected city in Poland.

You have obviously not been to England for a long time, you would find it difficult to hear English out on the streets,

Better,I have never been to UK except for quick transfers at Heathrow.Twice I think.

Look,I know the difference between England,Scotland,Great Britain and United Kingdom and I know what UK stands for but this is very confusing for many people not only in Poland and it's a mistake to expect people to know.I can bet you a $100 that majority of Americans would have no clue what UK stands for. Some time ago waiting in a cashier line at my local Food Lion in Selbyville DE I overheard a conversation. There was a magazine rack with one magazine displaying on the front page something about royal family doing something in Scotland. American mother and teenage daughter, looking average Americans. The girl asked "Mom,where is Scotland?",her mother's answer "Oh,it's in England".True story.

Law / Polish passport renewal - is PESEL required? [8]

Wrong!From USCIS web page:
During your naturalization interview, a USCIS Officer will ask you questions about your application and background. You will also take an English and civics test unless you qualify for an exemption or waiver. The English test has three components: reading, writing, and speaking.

Yes, I was a bit stupid, I wrote "United Kingdom" on the envelope.

Wouldn't call it stupid.I just wouldn'y blame USPS clerk if he/she couldn't figure it out if I wrote Polska instead of Poland on an envelope.

when I first came to Poland I did not speak any Polish, unusual yes?

Nah,not really. When I first came to the US I didn't speak much English either.

We have however torn hair out at Urzad Miasta trying to register car, get Meldunek'd, karta pobytus etc.

I feel you as I recentelly had to get Polish ID (4 visits in Urzad Miasta!).On the bright side you got it done and I don't think something can be worse than that as getting the new driver licence was pretty much painless except for waiting period.

Imagine coming half way around the world only to be sucked up by a tornado

Tornados will be your least problem in Poland as I have never experienced one here.
