Law / Polish citizenship by petition to the president of Poland? [66]

it can be quite expensive

Not really. Polish state archives are actually quite reasonably priced provided that you give them enough details and don't let them search for you through the records. It's the Civil Registration offices that rip you off big time. Despite: many records are already online for free.

they need to come from the archives with the proper stamp

That I don't know.

It gives you the number of the microfilms. Why don't you go to an LDS Family History Center near you and order the relevant films or microfiches? Costs only a handful of bucks and you can make copies once the films arrive at the center.

Sorry, just saw that you already checked the Poznan Project. To find the location of the documents, you have to click on the "Original record" link to the right of the record. A window will pop up with the information you're looking for.

Instead of dealing with the archive in Warsaw, why don't you contact the State Archive in Poznan or Bydgoszcz directly? That's where the documents should be. Or even better: search for his marriage record for free on poznan-project.psnc.pl

I dont believe he served in the polish army before migrating

How could he? There was no Polish army in 1897.

News / Officials in Poland are hailing an upcoming visit by Donald Trump [720]

Conservatives and the right-wingers are the exact opposite and want the government to have the least amount of power

That would be the Libertarian nut jobs and not the brain-dead right-wingers who are currently running our country.

germany is buying a key resource from an adversary

So where should Germany buy its natural gas instead? From the USA? We are not reliable either at the moment. Decisions, decisions...

Genealogy / Angela Merkel is partially Polish. Her family name could be Kaźmierczak [208]

Paying attention...

You base your opinion on just one radio interview that you found on the web? They were talking about the educational difference between areas of high concentrations of Mexicans and low:

"Mexican-Americans who live outside of high concentrations of Mexicans - so Mexican-Americans who live outside of California and Texas - tend to have more education, tend to have higher earnings, tend to look like their more successful."

This sentence above is to be taken with a grain of salt, by the way, because it does not take into account that both states are big and that the concentration of Hispanics and Latinos in the south is much higher than further up north due to the proximity to Mexico. Once they leave these areas, they are good. I live in Northern California for example, and I see and talk to these people every day. Here in the Bay Area, your assumption is dead wrong.

it's importance has been greatly exaggerated in recent decades

I'm afraid we have to disagree here.

The country was founded by the descendants of settlers and colonists

That's why true W.A.S.P.s consider themselves something special. After the colonial period, they only played a secondary role.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Immigration_to_the_United_States#History

the third generation does worse than the second and the fourth worse than the third.

No offense, but that's utter nonsense, Maf. Where do you live that you come to such a conclusion?

Few years of experience as a developer cider programmer etc plus a bachelor's is usually enough.

There are hardly any simple code monkey jobs in Silicon Valley anymore, Dirk. You are either top notch, or you won't get a job. They don't pay you 150K+ for nothing.

techrepublic.com/article/top-10-highest-paid-tech-jobs-in-silicon-valley

120k is nothing in silicon valley esp after ridiculous taxes

Not so much because of taxes, but because of housing costs. It's crazy what you have to shell out these days for a small home even in an "up and coming" neighborhood.

You win.

Hands down. :)

Thanks for making my point that it is possible to have all of that without foreigners.

You still don't get it, do you? The USA is a huge country compared to South Korea or Japan. Our nation is traditionally based on immigration, which is why we have such a diverse population. They are homogeneous, we are not. They have highly educated and motivated people, we have not (any more). You can't turn back time, even if you would love to have that good old plantation master feeling back.

Yeah cuz Cali has none of that.

That's not what I said. Read again.

because any dude with a few years coding or programming experience can get a decent job

Sorry, but you don't know what you're talking about. To land a good job as a software developer in Silicon Valley, you'll have to be really good and not just average. And if you believe that all the foreigners work for nothing and undercut American wages, try again.

Is Japan "toast"? Is South Korea "toast"?

No, but they have a functioning education system and highly motivated people. We have Flyover Country, opiate addicts, gangs and gun nuts. You should come to the Bay Area and take a good look around. Foreign citizens make up nearly three-quarters of the Silicon Valley tech workforce; almost 40% of Silicon Valley is foreign born.

India for example is in large parts still third world, yet there's an overwhelming number of Indian engineers in the Valley.

What do you think happened right after WW2? You believe that German scientists like von Braun got a friendly invitation with R.S.V.P. to move to the US? No, they were taken into "protective custody" and really had not much of a choice. Call that what you want.

wrong if we need a steady supply of people

Exactly. Look at our education system and the social problems we have in the USA, and you know what's wrong. It has already started that we are losing talented people instead of attracting them to the country. American exceptionalism - especially the superiority part - is a myth.

mass low-skilled immigration is a sign that things aren't working

The immigrants might be low skilled when they arrive in their new country, but what about their children? Do you believe that they will be low skilled too just because their parents were?

low birth rates and unwillingness to do low paid or physical work

Every country in the developed has low birth rates. That's just how it is. Incentives to have more kids never worked. The question though is, do we really need THAT many people.

Have you ever met a headhunter...

Until very recently, many top talents came to the US voluntarily. We didn't have to use headhunters to find and hire them. That might change though once the Republicans are done with the immigration system, and then we're toast. One day we might have to resort to the proven methods of the past again: enter a war late, be one of the victors and then steal every patent and scientist we can get hold of. Worked before, didn't it?

there are winner places where everyone wants to be and loser places where anyone who can leaves

So the United States - an immigrant country which still attracts some of the best talent from all over the world - is built on an unsustainable model? If we would stop immigration completely, we would be toast within a decade.

...emigration is also a massive brain drain from these countries

Yes, in a way it's a different form of colonialism. In the past we extracted resources, now we siphon off the best and brightest of the developing world.

New ideas are asked for!

Not a new idea, but I believe that investing in these countries is still the best way to deal with the crisis. The west should stop handing out foreign aid though, because that money will almost certainly end up in the hands of some corrupt politician.

You see, there is 6 billion ... people out there living at the bottom.

You see, and that's our problem right there. Uncontrollable population growth in the third and second world. You won't stop these people from moving north unless you start a nice little nuclear war or become a genocidal animal like Adolf. Cutting back welfare payments in Europe might slow the current development down for a while, but it won't stop it. Especially when you consider that many new arrivals in Europe are actually war refugees and not economic migrants. So what do you suggest as a solution? Serious answer, please.

Senegal

You have to take a look at each and every European country and where their migrants came from. The picture in France looks completely different to the one in Spain, the U.K. or Germany for example.

An improved economy tends to increase emigration in poor countries.

There's an interesting article about this here:

ipsnews.net/2018/02/african-migration-europe-not-crisis-opportunity

They bring up some important points, although I disagree with their conclusion that "African migration to Europe is an opportunity." We still can't run away from this problem.

That is indeed stupid, but it doesn't answer the question why these people leave their homes and families, indebt themselves to pay off a criminal smuggler and risk their lives to cross the Mediterranean in the first place. Free handouts in Europe, or could it be that their home countries are so dirt poor and war torn that they don't have a future there? Which brings us back to the meddling of certain nations.

EU and NATO just crossed every red line..

Don't forget to mention why the continent is really in such disarray at the moment. The refugees and migrants didn't show up on Europe's doorstep overnight and without reason. There's a handful of nations which were (and keep) meddling in the Middle East and Africa, which started a few wars and toppled a few dictators to spread "democracy" and sell a boatload of weapons. That's where all the mess started - not with Merkel.

UK, Ireland / Former minister admits UK messed up on immigration [78]

Miloslaw, we were talking about open borders; i.e. no passport controls to speak of when someone enters the country. This is simply not true for the U.K., even though the country is very welcoming to citizens of other EU members. The biggest issue is probably not migration from the continent, but from Commonwealth citizens that seem to (still?) move to the U.K. in large numbers.

Genealogy / Trying to build Polish Family Tree... Too Many inconsistencies. [12]

Alan, what does the naturalization document of your grandfather say? Family name, date and place of birth? If it's Wladyslaw Kozlowski, check out the dataset I linked to in post #8. That one seems to be promising.

Here's the marriage record of your grandfather (no. 10):
familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:S3HY-6P74-3LX?i=406&cc=1469062

Name changes happened all the time because immigration agents and other government employees couldn't handle/ understand the foreign spelling. They simply americanized the names.

Well, replace "great grandparents" with "grandparents" then... :)
Sorry, my bad.

Have you searched the LDS database already? There are quite a few datasets and documents for Wladyslaw Kozlowski/ Walter Koziol (born in 1894) there. The first one looks promising.

I'm sure you would be totally fine with a sign outside a grocery store saying "Polish nationals and Polish Americans not welcome", right?

I'm almost certain that the spelling of the first and last names of your ancestors were altered when they entered the U.S. . That's a common problem. If I were you I would search the usual sources for name variations.

Is the 1819 a year of birth? Is the 20.07.1892 a death date?

Looks like. The e-mail was only added as a comment to the Poznan Project dataset.
