News / Polish Independence Day March in Warsaw. Is it going to be the biggest march yet? [1530]

The army will be doing the security

According to well-informed sources, the army will seal off the access to the Dmowski round-about where the march is to start. Sources say the authorities exclude any possibility for the nationalists' march to set off from there one hour before the official march begins (as planned by the nationalists). Not without reason the body which organizes the official march is the Ministry of Defense. People who want to participate in the Independence March (the original one organised by the nationalists) have no other choice but to join the official march with President Andrzej Duda and Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki - says the source quoted by wirtualna polska.

Work / Panic at the doctor - I need a sick note (L4) from my work in Poland [9]

the Polish doctors tell me that I cannot take sick leave for more than three days back

This is true. Why on earth have you been waiting for a month without having a sick leave.

Doctor Who can provide me with a sick leave for work for end of October? L4 to be more specific!

Only a psychiatrist can do that in Poland. They can do that with the delay of six months even!

So what? So what ? So what? What is the big deal? Do you see a problem with a phrase 'only black Africa'?

Yes, I do. There are a lot of people other than black in Africa and Africa is surely a place for them, too.

it seems they don't like the march as much as some armchair Poles in other countries do

Pseudo-Poles or armchair Poles ... what is the difference?

News / Polish Independence Day March in Warsaw. Is it going to be the biggest march yet? [1530]

do you think they are there by chance, funded from their own pockets?

Do you think that a railway ticket from Budapest to Warsaw is so expensive?

Last year, the then interior minister Mariusz Błaszczak could not see racist banners like "Only white Europe" (Europa tylko biała) with his own eyes during the march. Perhaps he could not, but the police force he supervised could not see them either. This year the interior minister pays 1000 zloties in addition to each policeman who will work on the 11the of November (many of the police force have been on strike which takes the form of a sick leave). Doesn't the Polish state become "theoretical" again?

The mad dreams of psudo-Poles living abroad may not include the above factors, but you live in Niederschlesien, Dolno, a province which today is Polish, so you should know all this.

Even if it's true and these people are morons they still have every right to be out on the street.

Agreed. This is no good decision by HGW. This is not PRL and the mayor cannot simply ban a march because she doesn't like it.

I think she has some other agenda behind her decision. She wants to manipulate the government into defending the march, so she can next say that PiS support the nationalistic scum in Poland.

Luckily for everyone, her decision can be taken to court and I can't imagine a court upholding such a ban (independent courts are very important!).

a proud patriot saluting in a manner rather identical to the way that Nazis did

FAKE THE GUY IS HUNGARIAN with a rent a mob that came over from Hungary.

So he could just be a "true" Hungarian patriot.

Do you see any difference between "patriot" and "nationalist", Dolno? Below, you can see those "patriots" with the banner reading "EUROPE AWAY". Do you imagine a representative of the Polish government participating in the march in Warsaw having such "guests" from abroad?

He doesn't want to take part cause he is a wuss. Like all the previous so called politicians who are scared of what progressives will say

What nonsense are you spewing you stupid ignorant commie.

The Polish government knows perfectly well what they are doing and would not listen to a stupid facist loony like yourself claiming to be a true Polish patriot who has spent over 20 years outside Poland paying taxes to foreign governments.

back in Poland the mayor of Wrocław has outlawed a march there

It was precisely in Wrocław where another facist loony burnt the effigy of a Jew during one of the previous marches.

I'm sure Grandma would love to see such gothic writing being paraded around outside her window.

That picture above (one in the middle) is perhaps essential for explaining why President Duda did not want to take part in the March once his condition that the colours during the March should be only red and white could not be met. On the photo you can see a lot of dark green colour which seems to be the colour of the ONR (nationalist movement). On top of that this sign:

onr

which clearly reminds people of some other one that brought Europe to ruins was lavishly displayed during the March.

It is worth noting that no member of the Polish government decided to participate in the March this year. They all say they are busy being engaged somewhere else and usually outside the capital. Even the PiS government has decided that flirting with the nationalist movement can be quite embarrasing as they are hardly popular among Polish people at all.

News / "It's too late for Germany" (but not for Poland) [1798]

Personally, I'd like to see Poland bring a court case on the matter.

And what about Greece? Greece's case seems to be an interesting one in the context of Poland's claims for reparations from Germany ...

A report of a special committee of the Greek parliament which was being prepared for several years says that Germany should pay Greece 299 billion euros in compensation for destruction, robberies and economic exploitation during the occupation of the country by the Third Reich in 1941-1944]. In addition, Germany must also repay 11 billion EUR to the Central Bank of Greece - this is the loan amount (including interest accruing for 75 years) which Reichsbank borrowed in the Bank of Greece in 1943 and later did not return.

This "invoice for occupation" was drawn up on the basis of very meticulous research. Among others, 400 thousand pages of documents from the American archives regarding German crimes committed in Greece have been inspected. During the occupation the Germans killed tens killed tens of thousands of Greeks and 300,000 people died as a result of hunger resulting from the German occupation policy.

The Germans insist that they do not have to pay any compensation to Greece. In their opinion, the case was terminated when in 1960 they paid 115 million marks to the Greek government, that is, the sum which is equivalent to about 200 million dollars today.

News / Polish Independence Day March in Warsaw. Is it going to be the biggest march yet? [1530]

Last Wednesday, the conference of the organizers of the Independence March took place. The head of the initiative, Robert Bąkowicz, said that the 100th anniversary of regaining independence by Poland is "a moment in which we Poles should unite and not divide".

- Despite the fact that some political differences divide us, despite the fact that there are situations in which we are in a very strong political dispute, we would like to invite President Andrzej Duda - added Bąkowicz. He explained that the organizers want the president to speak at the beginning of the March.

According to the information provided by the media, talks between the Chancellery of the President and the organizers of the March of Independence continued for some time. According to the media, the Chancellery wanted a guarantee that the only symbols that would appear on it would only white and red colors.

Apparently, such a guarantee could not be obtained. The president will not take part in this demonstration once again.

President Duda has said that he will not participate in the Independence March in Warsaw this year.

- I would like us to go together in the Independence March, and it is a matter of responsibility to society. Let's stand side by side and show people that we can be together. We do not have to bite ourselves - president Andrzej Duda said in a Friday interview for Rzeczpospolita. Many people took these words as the president's invitation to the march organized by the nationalists.

However, according to the RMF FM radio station, the president himself will not take part in this demonstration.

DW doesn't even say that they were Syrians

Tbh, I can clearly see in the indicated article of DW that they were Syrians:

Eight men were arrested in the idyllic German city of Freiburg on Friday in connection with the rape of an 18-year-old woman. Police said that seven of the suspects were Syrian men aged 19 to 29, and one native German aged 25.

What's your agenda in accusing the German press of unfair reporting, whereas you unfairly report what they have siad?

News / German legal discrimination against Polish speakers [209]

I know you are shuffling meaningless papers two hours a day (the rest of your six hour working day is a coffee, cakes and playing candy crush on the internet)

And I know you love to write meaningles, but quite lenghy Bolshevik-style manifestos against Poland's membership in the EU that fulfill your dreams of a petty chauvinistic Polish nationalist who has been choosing to live outside Poland for many many years.

friendly relations with the marshal of peace Vladimir Putin and a model democrat Recep Erdogan.

Agreed, the photo you've posted isn't very much convincing for Merkel or Macron as political leaders in the democratic world. But diplomacy has its obligations and you just cannot say: I don't like you, so go away, I don't want to have a picture with you. Besides, both Merkel and Erdogan do not look especially happy on that photo.

The rules were changed in the middle of the game

No, they were not. New treaties have been signed, but no, they did not amount to a change in basic rules.

In Poland, the majority of people, including Our Great Leader Chairman Jarosław Kaczyński, still support the idea of Poland's presence in the EU.

What is more to it, Chairman Kaczyński explicitly supports the idea of Angela Merkel in the post of Bundeskanzlerin and says it is the best available option for Poland.

You don't know who I am, what I do for a living and what I add to the wealth of a nation. Unless your post-commie sources inform you on that from Moscow?

you better shut your mouth lecturing others, key?

You are the prime example of a "true Polish patriot" who has been choosing to live outside of Poland for many many years, so you better shut up your mouth in the discussion regarding true Polish patriots.

What about introducing the Monday of 12th December as a first Polish bank holiday?

Monday will be spent with heads under the cold water tap.

Maybe yours are typically spent with head under the cold water tap ...

And for the record I am Polish...jealous?

You are Polish? But in your profile you say you don't speak Polish. Then you are not a true Polish patriot since true Polish patriots speak Polish and choose to live in Poland.

If you searched my house, roof to basement, you would not find one solitary Polish object except that passport I picked up last Friday.

That is not entirely true. You would find one more except for the said passport of yours.

I made every reasonable (that excluded a lobotomy) effort to erase my Polish experience

Of course, only in case when that lobotomy of yours has not been performed ...

News / How will BREXIT affect the immigrants in UK and Poland. [1114]

I have no idea why every single thread becomes about Muslims in Britain, Germany and Sweden

I also have no idea why every thread turns into a rant about Muslims in UK, Sweden , Germany.

Please, do not confuse one's obsessions with one's education. A person may have a high-quality education and yet may be obsessed with something which has nothing to do with their education. Likewise, an obsession may touch an uneducated person, too. The problem is purely medical in nature rather than educational.

In practice, this forum seems to be bound to have two clown at the same time. Last time, they were British clowns, this time they are American ones.

that very famous speech by Winston Churchill (we will fight them on the beaches...etc) Every single word was carefully chosen by his speech writers

I simply don't believe it. Could you please provide a link? Isn't "l'anglais n'est que du français mal prononcé"?

we should do 'intercambio'. How would you say that in German?

Maybe I should have put it in " " quotation marks....

It's OK, you shouldn't worry about this. My Longman dictionary dates back to the 1990s and at that time no one had ever imagined the verb "swarm" to be negatively linked to the noun "immigrants" or "refugees" as political correctness was probably unheard of at that time.

You'd better watch out not to use the term "send someone into Polish death camps". Such a term (in die polnishen Vernichtungslager) was used on the website of the "Augsburge Allgemeine" in the article entitled "Der steinige Weg der Juden in Bayern" on 20 October, but after the Polish embassy in Berlin protested against it, the passage has been changed accordingly into:

Aus der jüdischen Gemeinde Fischach konnten noch 1939  42 Menschen auswandern, 56 jüdischen Fischacher deportierte die Polizei 1942 in die deutschen NS-Vernichtungslager auf tschechischem und polnischem Gebiet und nach Theresienstadt.

the verb ' to swarm' is usually used for insects. Any reason why you are likening people to insects?

Used as a verb in that sense it could mean come together, assemble, congregate, meet, gather, etc.

My "Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English" says the following:

swarm - verb [Intransitive]; to move in a crowd or mass: As the fire spread, people came swarming out of the building. | The photographers swarmed round her.

However, BB was using swarm as a transitive verb (foreigners swarming their streets), so perhaps this is where the difference in usage lies ...

Off-Topic / Ukraine - a country in Central Europe? [28]

Central Europe is Germany, Poland and a few others...It's a geographical thing...because they ARE smack in the middle!

Not only geographical. I think it is a historical and cultural thing as well (with the exception of Switzerland perhaps). Once Germany has said good-bye to its efforts to eventually build a vast central European empire which should over time become German in character, the political concept of Central Europe may be safely revived again. East Germany would be a very important link in that scheme because of its strong Middle Ages Slavic backdrop and its important historical connections with Czechia, Hungary and western Poland.

Classifieds / Meeting Fellow "Language Scholars" Travelling to Poland [3]

I travel to Poland every year for about 3 weeks, because I enjoy practicing my Polish

What kind of progress do you make with every stay of yours? Is it only "practicing" things you had learned before a visit or are you able to learn new things as well?

It is actually hard to learn new things without being totally immersed which means living in the foreign country and not only visiting it for a relatively short period of time. Thus, in my view, such a stay would mostly mean practicing things that you have already learned.
