News / EU confirms it will take action against Poland over court reforms [554]

I was talking about the Supreme Court since this is in Poland a point of contention.

the new law on Supreme Court hasn't been passed and was a matter of negotiations between the president and PiS leaders untill a couple of days ago - so I don't know what you are talking about - and it still hasn't been made public what kind of an agreement they have reached

so Tacitus - what would you say?

either you mean Supreme Court judges (aka Federal Court Judges) or Constitutional Court judges - or you are simply lying

anyway judges should be elected by the population like in most states of the USA - then they can be really independent of politicians (but not independent of public scrutiny like it was in Poland)

As a rule, each decision on the initial employment, vesting with lifetime tenure or promotion of a judge is taken by the department of justice. Yet in some of the states there is some kind of a parliamentary body that needs to be heard or even has a say in some of the decisions on careers of individual judges (Richterwahlausschuss). The mostly decisive influence of the administration on the career of judges is exceptional in continental Europe, where mostly bodies of judges, elected by and within the judiciary take this kind of decision (e.g., France: conseil superieur de la magistrature, Italy: consiglio superiore della magistratura). By some it is regarded as a threat to judicial independence that with a view to their personal career judges might be inclined to specially regard possible political effects of their decisions or may choose to support a political party.

this is from wikipedia entry on German judiciary - it says it's administration of Bundeslaedner has the most say in appointing judges - so Tacitus - what would you say?

Genealogy / Slavs are descendants of Sarmatians? [600]

with a large influx of German vocabulary.

Germanic not German

I don't know about the details but the general picture seems reasonable - it is very likely that Proto-Slavic was a bastard Baltic mixed with Iranian (perhaps Sarmatian) elements and then influenced by Gothic (quite a big list of Gothic loanwords in Slavic) - I don't know if Goths ever ruled over Proto-Slavs but they definitely lived next to each other

aha, hmm - well maybe it changes a thing - but I will voice my opinion on that matter on Polish forums - ani kroku wstecz - not a step back - **** this idiotic club of the EU with double standards - the same rules for appointing judges are in place in Germany yet there is no accusation of 'breach of the rule of the law' for Germany

btw I am not bothered by the so called EU sanctions - the current financial perspective was anyway the last one where Poland was getting any substantial EU funds

Work / Native English looking for a teaching job in Poland [135]

why don't Polish teachers strike for more money Harry (sorry Dirk, I was quoting you, but am interested in Harry's take on this

because up to recently there were plenty of people to take their place if they get fired

No, a mechanism exists by which they can trigger both simultaneously

yeah - where? show me

also the European Commission doesn't need the Europarliament approval or instigation to invoke Article 7 of Lisbon Treaty as far as I know - so? what are they waiting for? they could have done it 2 years ago, no?

no - because the EU would have to break it's own treaties to strip both Poland and Hungary of voting rights at the same time, simple as that

if I should remind you the EU did eventually nothing when PiS changed the rules for the Constitutional Court

and what happened so far Atch? like.. nothing?

so the first step has already been taken in triggering Article 7 against them.

Poland will veto triggering the Article 7 against Hungary - it will take eurocrats to break their own european treaties to trigger the Article for both Hungary and Poland at the same time

Work / Cost of living in Gdańsk, average salary for experienced software engineer in Poland [64]

Green Way

I think I have seen Green Way outlets in Gdańsk in 2007 but their website doesn't mention any at the moment - there are two in Gdynia though - travelling from Gdańsk to Gdynia for a weekend dinner/lunch maybe a bit too much (though I commuted from Gdynia to Gdańsk for work)

there is another vegan network that is present in Gdańsk and that is Bioway

Life / Your favourite Polish Music Album [25]

I always heard 'pierwsze słowa' there - but I first consulted tekstowo.pl and yes they say it's 'piękne słowa' - and finally I went on to listen to the song carefully (I haven't heard it in years) and yes, it's clearly 'piękne słowa' - it seems I never listened to the song carefully and assumed much - sorry Chemikiem for misinformation

Law / Finding proof of Polish passport of my grandfather [7]

he question is - is there an online service for searching citizenship documents? (not birth / death / etc.. documents)

I don't know but I doubt it

Also, anyone who renounces his citizenship at that time due to an obligation in order to enter Palestine and not out of free will - is there a way to get it restored?

I have no idea Section - i'm no expert on those issues - maybe someone else here could help you

in Ukraine that sounds like Delaityn.

I think there is a town in Ukraine called Deliatyn or Delatyn

as for the time of immigration to Israel, I guess it was after the II World War (many survivors of the Holocaust left Poland shortly following the end of the war)

I have no idea what was the standard procedure for people leaving Poland for Israel at this time - wether they had to renounce Polish citizenship or not

there is also a possibility that Section's ancestor left for Isreal straight from Germany where they were liberated

I think the OP needs to hire someone (preferably a lawyer with an experience of searching archives) to trace for documments in Poland - but maybe someone can come up with an idea which institution the OP can directly turn to to arrange for an archive query

Travel / What is the cheapest way to get from Modlin airport to Warsaw? [106]

I don't know what are the going prices from Modlin to Warsaw city centre (the distance is around 15 km) - but two years ago I used a cab for a 10 km distance and it cost me 60 PLN and fuel prices have actually gone down a bit since then - but I think foreingers should be careful with cabbies here and ask for the price before boarding - otherwise they might get overcharged

piękne słowa mówią wszystko

it's 'pierwsze słowa' Chemikiem not 'piękne słowa' - first words have more potential to tell you everything than beautiful words - the latter are often used to deceive or manipulate

I have recently rediscovered Kult's Ostateczny Krach Systemu Korporacji album and I listen to it almost non-stop (I know I am weird ;)

Law / A complicated Poland's divorce case - for whom baby and the flat? [2]

What would the divorce verdict be in such a case

I'm not a prophet, but unless the woman is an addict, mentally ill or similar there is a low chance the husband will get the custody of the child - if you haven't worked full time most of the time the court will definitely question your ability to support the child, as well

Life / Does Medicover insurance in Poland cover the cost for test done? (blood test, vaccinations, etc.) [11]

Do most people in Poland get them or not ?

less then 10 per cent of Poles get the flu vaccination and the reasons might be the same as in your case plus the cost - I never had a flu vaccine myself

I don't know whether they are mandatory in situations you described though - I would presume they are mandatory for medical staff but I am not sure about the patients

oh they are not required for students and teachers

Language / Polish pronounciation of: cz vs ć/ci, sz vs ś/si, ź vs ż and dż vs dź/dzi - how to make these sound diff [79]

@Exx217

Exx - you are not taking into account words like działa, dzieje, dzianina, Madzia - you actually don't hear i pronounced in these words after dz or dź - in these words i after dz and before another vowel serves only to denote the softness of dz/ that dz turns into dź - you don't pronounce these words as dźjała, dźjeje, dźjanina, Madźja but dźała, dźanina, dźeje, Madźa - so ultimately in these words dzi = dź - so you were both right and both wrong :P
