Life / How could things have gone so wrong (Poland church dress code) [195]

wearing shorts in school... so as you see it's not only about churches.

Schools are type of a church, where people pray through science to the same God, whom we constantly search. The dressing code, therefore, should be appropriate to this religious institution.

News / What are Poland's optimal both real and virtual neighbors? [81]

Optimal...? In what way?

In a very direct way. Among various choices there is often one which is optimal.

Why just European countries?

Because, first of all, nobody gives a damn about non-Europe and, secondly, Poland, I have no idea how, ended up neighboring only European states.

I dont have anything bad to say about Ukraine really

You better not :)

Belarus: I am not sure.

Czechs and Slovaks I cant really say.

Russia: is a VERY complex situation

If I have any misinformation please correct

But you didn't say a thing ;) How can you be wrong?

Stop shaking in your boots Nat, Poland is not going to invade anybody in foreseeable future.

I know because you want to live and celebrate Easter in Polish church, which is nice and admirable, Ironside. As soon as this wish expires, I will know you are ready to switch countries, religion and language, which is also nice and I will support you in this decision. I'll help you with my language (do you live somewhere near Pszemysl?) :)

I agree with you, welshguyinpola, more than you think. And it is great that you pointed this out. Christ made it about our spiritual life, whereas in the Old Testament and XXI century Testament it seems revolving around the same primitive material notions of dress code.

That is why I didn`t know. I have never attended this special mass service.

No, it is not special. Every mass is made of these two parts. You will definitely find it in any prayer book. But it lost its original significance, though the name is still there.

According to what ur saying then, they should have been put off by her, but in fact they werent, they were put off by me.

Were those people old men or old women? Women. You see. For them our hairy legs are sexy. Men are different: we respect material beauty even in the spiritual places :) We appreciate God's work whether it is physical or spiritual and they can be mixed, any time and any place. That's why we made in God's image and women in the image of our ribs. They don't understand :)

I am saying Nathan, that this lady, just as I, are able to come before the Lord in whatever we want to wear as it is the exultations of our mouths and the meditations of our hearts which we are brining to him

I understand you, but it is not only about you and a girl, it is about other people's ability to meditate. I know that you are able to think about higher matters, but others cannot when they see naked body. Nobody will punish you and you should do as you like, but also you might consider a bit weaknesses of those who cannot pray by seeing beautifully exposed body parts.

Now, that brings us to Welshie's point. Where is the Biblical (religious) basis for no shorts?

You would definitely find one in the Old Testament, Seanus. There are so many rules that the head will spin around.

And they

Pawian, I found it. It is called in Polish "msza katechumenow" and is the first part of the mass. But I didn't find the exact word we have in the Ukrainian church which asks for those to leave, but again it is strictly symbolic.

Different churches have different standards, to be fair. However, I say this as a matter of observation without lending either support or criticism to it. The RCC seems to advocate artificial constructs and what I may describe as 'add-ons'.

Absolutely agree with you here, Seanus. I am playing a bit devil's advocate as I don't like this nonsense. The Church turns from the spiritual to the "who wear what" mode. But I understand the people on the other side of the debate, because we all are different. Who should win? I think the majority or even better build Churches with/out cloth code to accomodate everyone.

I pray with my mouth and my heart and will say the same prayer if my legs are covered or not

You are a strong man. When I see beautiful legs in front of me, I am getting confused and disoriented. It ruins the whole purpose of being in the Church. I want to come to the Church and forget about all the seductions of the outside world. I am and many other people are like that - weak and pathetic. We need clear minds at least in one place. Will others accomodate this minor understanding of our needs?

Where is this dress code to be found? Sb, please point me to an official source.

I think, Seanus, it is not about what is written, but certain accepted norm of our society. It is like smoking in the bars: it was Ok ten years ago and now it is all of a sudden forbidden. Why? Because will and safety of the majority is taken into consideration.

To the best of my knowledge, you don`t show any certificates before taking communion/mass.

Yes, but there is a part in the mass when it is aked all those not Christians to leave the Church proper. I think this is very outmoded and incorrect and also in contradiction with Christ's philosophy.

I remember being told that it is inappropriate to wear a shirt with short sleeves after the mess. It was summer and hot outside. I had my pants on me, though. I agree with the Welshguy in that the dressing code is blown out of proportions sometimes and older women (not men!!!) have problem with that. On the other hand, I think it is just some part of the generally accepted etiquette to be properly dressed. Have you seen a groom in tuxedo and shorts? Why not? Because his bride would tear the last bits of hair if she sees him like that. Maybe, the women is the real problem, not the shorts in the Church as such?

The Church is about forgetting for a moment your body and trying to find your soul. When I see a chick in front of me with all the beauty that God gave her I forget naturally my soul and I am all body again. I need to concentrate.

History / The smallest Poland ever? [115]

the only name you will hear every is just 'Kresy Wschodnie'

Is it any better? It simply means "eastern borders/limits". These lands are not your borders.

operation "Polish freedom" long finished and would play stupid.

You just make a wrong move and you will lose your independence altogether. Lithuania, Germany, Belarus, Ukraine, Czech republic and Slovakia will recall old grievances and Poland will become like the Vatican in a few days, and you, grubas, will be the head of this city-state. Do you want it? Better enjoy like all normal people in Poland your beautiful country and stop jumping around.

Also - why in the world would you invade an ally against Russia just for the sake of some city that no-one regards as being Polish anyway?

Some people just like to search trouble on their rear-ends.

Give me the 10th Armored Cavalry Brigade and a squadron of Su 22's and I will take Wilno tomorrow with a bunch of volunteers.

Ukraine will interfere by flank-attacking Poland with its 17th Armored Goat Brigade and a squadron of low flying ostriches. What will you do then?

How do you suggest we should call them?

I think that calling the western lands "odzyskane" (recovered) and the eastern lands "utracone" (lost) is too pretentious, Torq. It basically suggest that the ultimate right to the lands are in Poland, which is not true. Kievan Rus had Przemysl before Poland, but we don't call it "lost lands". Why France doesn't call Warsaw Duchy "lost territories" or Austria doesn't mention Poland as something lost. Call it its name: Galicia, Silesia, Wolyn, Vilnius, Grodno etc. This is, IMHO, more appropriate, what you think? Otherwise, it raises too much unnecessary tension.

I see that you are expert on Ukraine, well, well ...... where he was born - check.

Enlighten me, Ironside, with your immense intelligence where Taras Shevchenko was born. But before you answer that question remind me where Adam Mickiewicz, an icon of Polish literature was born. I hope it will help to straighten your narrow thinking process a bit.

Братались з вольними ляхами

Great point, don't you agree? Read every word carefully.

Kyiv is more Russian. The language of the streets there is Russian, not Ukrainian.

In what way? Just because a significant part of its population speaks Russian? Majority of those are proud Ukrainians who due to Russification speak Russian. But to say that they are Russians is wrong. It is the same as to say that Austrians are Germans and vice versa just because they speak the same language. There is different mentality, culture, history.

Life / Did you already bless your Święconka? [31]

That was on Friday. On Thursday it was last supper.

Sorry, you are right.

You must right, as it was about 45 years ago..

The same way here, JP, as you can see. Happy Easter to you too. Risen, indeed!

Next year?

Seanus suffers the same disease as Joe and me :) Everything upside down :)

Salutes Nathan with Obolon :)

Salut Seanus, you started on that too early ;) I am glad that brought back the traditions, it is really great. Happy Easter!

Not according to this

Oh, that's interesting. Thanks, Vincent.

Nat, is the custom of Easter basket still observed in Ukraine?

Absolutely. And also we have much larger baskets than the one on a picture :) We take the whole table to the church for blessing, quite literally :)

I think it was when today`s western Ukraine belonged to Poland?

I don't think Poland had more significant influence on the Ukrainian Easter celebrations than the other way around, because even though Ukrainian Catholic Church is Catholic, it is more like Greek Orthodox Church where it draws its roots from, than Polish Church of Roman rite. In addition, the Polish presence in western Ukraine was more city-bound and the villages lived what they knew since times unknown. This is what I like about my village - it keeps old, old traditions. Nowadays though, there are exchange of cultural traditions and it is Ok, bu I wish everyone kept one's uniqueness. It makes it more interesting.

I found this film but it was made in Ukrainian church in Ontario

It is nothing compared to an outside, rural setting somewhere in Ternopil region with ages-old traditions.

the priest came to the house to bless the food, usually before noon on Good Friday, or sometimes Thursday

It is impossible, you might have confused the dates. Priests will never bless food on Good Thursday or Friday. The reason is Christ according to the tradition was crucified on Thursday; Food blessing and the end of the Lent coincide with the Ressurection, which is three days later.

Life / Did you already bless your Święconka? [31]

It is one of the most uplifting holidays, I think. Something about the spring besides the Ressurection which makes it all the more powerful. The boxwood would be the symbol of the eternity and it is usually sticked on the top of a paska, which might show the rise of new life from the bread which went through its ups and downs as Christ to end up giving a hope. The eggs might more likely symbolize the beginning. Are they eaten first thing after blessing in Poland? We have a peeled egg split in so many parts as a size of the family and each eats a slice after a prayer. The visit to the cemetaries is done right after the church to share the happiness with the passed away relatives or not. Also there is meat of some sort: a piece of kielbasa or pasztet or butter formed in hedgehogs, which is amazing. In the villages especially the embroidered scarfs that cover the basket are different, unique for each woman that made it.

and Ukraine give us Lwow back and the very west of Ukraine so we can border with Hungary

And then you give back eastern Poland to Ukraine, western part to Germany and the northern territories to Sweden, which had that in the past and, of course, the southern territories to Austria where they should belong. How is that? Then just move to Budapest and enjoy Hungarians all day long.
