Genealogy / Did Polish fathers name their first son after their own name? [23]

Those are not traditions, they are obsessions

Got it in one.

His obsession with "being a true Pole" suggests that he has no identity of his own. Yet, strangely enough, for someone so obsessed with Poland and Polishness, he's showing a remarkably lack of will to move to Poland and to contribute to Polish society.

Life / What do decent Poles think about true rightists ? [148]

Yep. 5 Syrian lads run a couple of stalls in my local market

Yep, I know a couple here as well. Not to mention the Indian blokes everywhere delivering stuff.

Poland effectively lets anyone in as long as they meet the criteria relating to income and purpose of stay.

Why it's like that, I don't know, but the government seem to be remarkably unwilling to cap the number of non-EU migrants.

Yes, of course. :)

A more interesting riddle for me is what subject that yellow book relates to. ;) I haven't seen it before...

Life / Is it safe for Indians, Sikhs living here in Poland? Any Temple / Gurudwara in Wroclaw? [159]

The open door policy with India is very visible at street level in any large Polish city

Thank you, Maf. Yes, it's very visible these days, and the government has made it very easy for them to live here. They can work as much as they want when they have a residence permit, and many of the struggling private universities have realised that they're a great source of students. I was talking to one Indian guy yesterday about this: they can study a weak course like "business administration" where they turn a blind eye to cheating in tests, they don't have many classes and the rest of the time, they're free to work doing deliveries/working in kitchens/etc. The Indian I spoke to owns several Indian restaurants in Poland, and he says that it's been a great source of labour for him.

I'm always amused when people say that PiS are against immigration. One look on the streets says otherwise.

You're a Brit I guess, why so much grudge against Sikhs?

He's Canadian and has no connection to Poland. He's posting this because he's trying to discourage you from moving to Poland, because he's a racist tool.

Don't worry about him - those of us living in Poland welcome you here :) You'll be fine in Warsaw, just exercise basic safety rules (don't wander around dark areas late at night in bad areas) and no-one is going to bother you.

To reward your pains: What is the occasion?

Last day of school, for sure. I always get enough chocolate to last a year ;)

What Poland doesn't have (and doesn't need) are: terrorist attacks

Actually, Poland already has problems with domestic terrorists, as well as terrorists among the Polonia.

Still, the best thing is knowing that the current government have an open door policy for migration. Other countries have quotas, like Estonia. Poland doesn't.

Life / What do decent Poles think about true rightists ? [148]

It will have its political function soon enough with a surge of LGBT-qwerty movement.

Except it won't. The church doesn't want to get into a fight, because they're already reeling from revelations over the last few months.

Church was a safe haven during communist era

For snitches too, such as that disgusting piece of work in Gdańsk.

There's no political function to catholicism at present and so it's weakening.

I think it's actually quite notable how weak the church is here, politically. They seem to have settled into a situation where they'll support whoever pays them off, but they simply aren't able to actually influence national politics on any meaningful scale. They've failed with abortion, they failed with refugees, and I can't actually think of any successes that they've had.

Not every Pole yet - according to statistics - more than 90%, to a greater or lesser degree, is.

Those statistics are worthless. Even the Catholic Church's own statistics show less than 40% bother to attend mass, and that's on a day that's announced well in advance.

Language / What do you like in Polish language? [70]

It would be interesting to know who, how and why determined the different ways of spelling what are very similar words.

Polish (as we know it today) was first standardised in the late 1700's, then again in 1936 (to try and unify the mess that existed as a result of the partitions and the language diverging as a result, though I think there was also some squabbling going on between rival centres of the Polish language) and then post-WW2 with the Communists introducing universal free school education.

On the other hand, it was Jan Hus who brought about many of the innovations to the (then) Bohemian language, including the use of the hacek and accents.

One thing that it's important to note is that the accent plays a different role in Polish than in Czech.

Genealogy / DNA Testing in Poland. Is it popular? [81]

I did the 23 and Me test just for some fun.

What an obvious fake review.

The internet is full of these ridiculous companies at the minute, all offering wildly different results for the same thing.

UK, Ireland / SMART MOVE! Thousands of Poles are leaving the UK because 'life is a piece of s*** here now'. [26]

Money isn't everything.

I'm not judging them, only that there are many families that left and continue to stay away. Their children have grown up away from Poland, and many of them identify as both x and Polish. You don't really see many Polish kids growing up and returning to Poland without their parents - Poland is...maybe not a foreign country to them, but it's not their home anymore.

I know one Polish girl who moved to Scotland with her family, and we went to high school together. She's got zero interest in moving back to Poland - she finished high school there, she went to university there, she's worked there all her life - there's no way she's returning to a country where she doesn't know how anything works, to a country where she doesn't speak the language fluently enough to work at a high level. All her advanced language is in English, not Polish, simply because she never studied in Poland beyond the 6th class of primary school.

Life in Poland is fine if you're middle class or better, but it's still a miserable hard slog for working class people.

Travel / Poland in photo riddles [3134]

So Irish priests/ministers give the communion to the hand or mouth during a service? In Poland to mouth.

I've always found the practice in Poland to be odd and disgusting, to be honest. Also, it's strange that wine isn't given.

the current political elites impose regulations that restrict competition

Most people don't actually want free competition. The idea frightens them, because they'd have to survive without state intervention.

Life / Russian rap vs Polish rap [87]

Having said that, some Polish Rap is pretty good.....better than the rubbish coming out of The UK and The USA.

The older stuff (think Paktofonika and before) wasn't bad, but it really went downhill once Poland started to get richer. A lot of the stuff that came out of Poland in the 1990's and early 2000's really had an edge to it, but now, it's just a lame copy of Western rap. Still, it's better than Scottish rap that I found recently :/

Forgive the off-topicness of this, but I really like this - youtube.com/watch?v=tmgNFka7Ixw - it's a guy called Classified from Canada, but he's very down to earth.

Travel / Poland in photo riddles [3134]

It was quite interesting - the priest turned up and their flatmate had given them details of everyone staying there (without asking first!). They weren't home at the time, but I think they were right to be furious about both the priest enquiring about other people staying there and at the girl for handing over their details. It was seemingly quite intrusive, as he asked about them having partners and so on.

I know someone who actually sued the local parish to get removed from such details. It transpired that the church is exempt from RODO and other data protection stuff, which is surreal. The judge in the case asked the lawyer for the Church to show goodwill, and they refused!
