News / The Biedroń efffect - people leaving Słupsk, Polish city in crisis [21]

PiS to transport a couple of people connected to PiS members

Probably the ones fired from the various paid committees that did nothing, or the ones who had contracts to supply pointless and overpriced products issued by the previous PiS 'mayor', the one that was voted out so resoundly.

Life / What items is Poland's market missing? [20]

The ice is not there so much as to make the drink cold, as to keep it cold.

Best if the drink comes straight out of the fridge.

There could be a market here for lucozade. Not the healthiest drink by a long chalk but that wouldn't be a problem since the taste here is for drinks containing a lot of sugar, and I suspect it would be popular.

defend a religion

Why defend religions? They're all make-believe.

my point

You don't really have one, not least because you pretended that a small number of overseas students on temporary visas (most incidentally studying medicine) are "immigrants".

llives are saved by comming to Poland

You conveniently forget (or more properly misunderstand) that the figures in that document you posted for Saudis are fee-paying students on temporary visas, and funded by their government. There are actually more Poles in Saudi than Saudis in Poland.

But hey, don't let the facts stand in your way.

Quite a few

How many exactly? I can see fewer than 500 temporary residents from the Kingdom in total, all of them fee-paying students on temporary visas to study. Not immigration or "fleeing persecution" ...

Biedron is popular

Hugely so.

the 1000+ cronies appointed by PIS within a year of winning the election.

A ton of PiS activists were doing part-time non-jobs in Słupsk. They were appointed without interview or any accountability. They were all fired.

converging around Saudi norms

Hardly.

burqas

Burqas are rare in Saudi Arabia. Are you confusing it with the niqab, popular nowadays with a minority of Muslim women, mostly Deobandi and almost none of those here in Poland?

Don't you think this is a problem?

If you don't want to be a Salafi Muslim of the Hanbali school, don't be one.

the facts

Mostly opinion, presented in a sensationalist way.

why import

Who's importing. People have a right to hold unscientific religious views whether or not you or I approve of them.

It's just sensational journalism intended to play to the fears of reactionary people. I notice little criticism of any of the other religious courts, like the Catholic Marriage Tribunals, also based on the same Bronze Age fairy tales and make-believe.

Just lurvely how it's working out, isn't it?

Interesting that you've managed to find quotes from the three most right-wing newspapers n that country, one of them so unreliable that even Wikipedia has banned it as a source.

Food / What are favorite herbal teas in Poland/especially loose leaf? [15]

Chaga Mushrooms are found in Poland

They're very common and are called czyr brozowy (brzoza means birch). Making tea with them is rare here but some do it.

I'm pleased that kombucha tea hasn't caught on. A lot of people, get ill from that.

something fairly common to find in your country of birth that is hard to find in Poland

Some baking products are hard or impossible to find, and malt vinegar and English mustard are rare in the shops. You have to ask the question though whether the mark-up for importing something raises the retail price to a level at which people can happily live without something.

as they have here in the UK.

The market for greetings cards is plummeting in the U.K. - they are something mainly for the older generation.

here in the UK

You said last night that you were in Poland.

doesn't make it any less comically wrong than claiming Poland hasn't had religious courts, just like the UK, for centuries.

Exactly, and both are examples of successful multiculturalism.

private courts

The biggest ones are attached to each Roman Catholic diocese and are mostly concerned with ending marriages - rather like the Islamic ones.

The proof of this is in the way that people in the legal profession cannot easily move between the three separate legal jurisdictions

Some very significant differences, not just geographical.

British legal system

No such thing, not ever had been.

irrelevant detail

Not very irrelevant if you're from Scotland or Northern Ireland, is it?

factually correct.

Journalism....

You'll have to try harder, perhaps by telling us what the constitutional basis of this non-existent system is.

sharia court

Very good idea too. There have long been similar things in England and Scotland, the Beth Din, Catholic marriage tribunals. Just shows how well multiculturalism works

Why not ?

Think about it Spiritus, even try google, though anyone who is or claims to be British and thinks such a thing as a 'British legal system' exists now or at any time in the past is probably not quite clever enough to figure out how to do that.

I'll get the popcorn

Better take a few elementary lessons on life, politics and the legal systems in the U.K.

At what point do you consider someone's else counter-opinion ? Only when it falls in line with your own ideas ?

Ah, so on a discussion forum we can only express other people's views. Interesting...

News / Tusk or Hollande -- a Salomonic dilemma? What will be better for Poland? [180]

Tusk has just been re-elected as President of the European Council with 27 out of 28 countries in favour of his Presidency.

Great news.

A massive defea

A massive win for Poland, a massive defeat for Jaroslaw (Lady Constance) Kaczynski.

My prediction is that the EU and the European Council are no longer going to tolerate nonsense

This should serve as a warning for the PiS regime. Problem is, Some of them (Kaczynski, Macierewicz) have such a lack of self-awareness that they won't be able to resist going that bit too far.
