Life / Who is poor in Poland? [720]

Those "gangsters" give employment to millions and they drive the civilization forward. In ancient times, similar people were called Kings, aristocracy, gentry, at least in their origin.

it's as if people can't organize to build a bridge for themselves or a dam - so much was built during commie times in Poland and no Rokkes were there -(I don't mean people organized themselves spontaneously to build those things) - I don't say we don't need any private enterpruneurship but capitalism is not just roses and sweets ya know - even if people like Mr Rokke are leading some civilization adavances (think of James Jerome Hill) they can still cause harm even if they don't mean to

Poland is a land of many good opportunities but unfortunately for hard workers only .

yes, like Olejniks, Kluskas and the like

eeeh :)

ask yourself Monia, what happened to Mr Roman Kluska and why - you can start from wikipedia

Law / Setting up small business in Poland? [191]

ZUS which is about 800 zl a month must be paid regardless of turnover of the business. I don't know if watch repair includes VAT.

is it not true that ZUS is about 300 for the first year?

History / Poland's biggest historical blunder? [341]

Erm,is this the same mighty soviet army that would have overrun europe if not for the battle of Warsaw? ? make up your minds folks....

it would probably overrun Europe because there were tonns of communists in Western Europe including Germany

gangsters should spend their times in jail (if reeducation fails) - it's not imperative that we have big businesses Antek - the world will not collapse if one day there won't be people like Mr Rokke - btw the article in wikipedia says very little on Mr Rokkes -

Life / Why are Polish people so obsessed with race? [160]

It's seem Hitlers ideals still live on strong. Sorry if anyone finds that offensive. But judge people by from what I see.

is it that what you see? - Hitlers ideals influencing Poles - or is it just your way of explaining things?

people dislike Jews because of the perception they are crooks (like those from American Jewish Congress who want to put their hands on Polish property not having the appropriate inheritance rights (or would like to see compensations - some 65 billion dollars) (or crooks like Adam Michnik)

And imagine what, actions of Mr Rokke are one of major force driving the Norwegian economy, giving employment and well-being to masses of Norwegian people, also to immigrants.

I don't know Mr Rokke and his legacy - and don't feel like learning all about him (I guess even if I spend an hour on him I won't know enough) - I however know the case of Mr Kluska who was the founder of Optimus - I bet you have heard about him and the fate this country created for him - and you must have heard of some who have benefited from what happened to Mr Kluska - like perhaps ITI (TVN owner) who managed to acquire onet.pl for a modest price

You are so sorry for farmers. Are you a farmer? Describe your own experience and tell us what you are doing in life yourselves, what your own expectations are and what you expect for your dream Government to secure you a SUV, foreign holidays and a mansion.

yes my only dream is that in Poland all should have a SUV :)

1. Ones who spend own money for own purposes. We call them capitalists.
2. Ones who spend own money for purposes of other people. We call them philanthropists.
3. Ones who spend money of other people for own purposes. We call them thieves.
4. Ones who spend money of other people for for purposes of other people. we call them socialists.

I don't fit in any of these categories - I hardly spend any money

my foremost expectation is crooks are eradicated and not embraced (like Mr Misiak who could have used the closure of the shipyards to his own benefit having written the special bill himself - and well - is it not just the tip of the iceberg)

milky:
People I Know(Poles in Poland) only go to the pub once a month and they can afford maybe 2 or 3 beers.

Strange how the pubs in Lublin are always so busy at the weekends.

maybe it is simply because pubs in Poland are actually sparse for the population even in the cities - not like in
England where every small town has like 4 - 5 pubs

Travel / Most beautiful small towns / villages of Poland [49]

- Szydłów

I only happen to know Szydłów - but it is hardly a tourist destination (it wasn't this couple years ago when I visited)

btw I live in a Szydłów myself - but it's not the town you mentioned (just a village in Opolskie)

no I did not expect teachers to drive SUV's - who's driving them then? - your average farmer? - ever heard that most farms in Poland are desperate to make the ends meet

Great town but surely there are several towns, like this in Poland,no? This was one of the first towns I saw in Poland and it's sad to think it goes down from here. Most Europen countries have several towns like this or above this.

not really

On my drinking bout in Cambridge...

I don't know what is that supposed to prove: that there are less crooks in Poland that I envision? - or that a teacher who teaches smaller kids in Poland can afford a SUV (or any decent car for that matter)?

Another thing to bear in mind - while no-one is bothered by three generations living under the same roof in Poland, or brothers/sisters sharing a room - in the UK, this is a total no-no. So - the blue collar worker in Poland can raise his children at granny's flat and they can share a room - in the UK, the children would suffer dreadful bullying because of this.

so actually grannies and grandpas are keeping this country (I mean Poland) afloat

News / RHD cars in Poland - my campaign to change the rules in Poland [128]

Exactly the reason I'd never let Poles import RHD cars - can you imagine the carnage?

I can - so if one campaigns for allowing RHD car registration in Poland acts to the detriment of the general population here - what works somewhere does not always work elsewhere - (a business in pork in a muslim country anyone???)

Gumishu you are talking on a school teacher driving a SUV. Do you think is is normal for a school teacher to drive a SUV? Look goddam around, go to any bigger city -- it is crammed with new 4x4 -- do you believe Poland is only crooks? Then we are missing resources to be stolen by so many.

hahah we are missing resources - you must be joking - this country is full of resources - only the fruit of that goes to just few pockets - ever heard what is the avarage rate farmers sell their milk (it's about 1 PLN a litre) and what you pay for it in you store??

edit: and the prices are quite good now - two years ago the price per litre was as low as 0,6 PLN

Problems with apples will be far worse though - part of my 'basket for 10zl' would include a lot of apples.

there are sorts of apples that have been mostly discontinued in the west but are very popular in Poland - like for example Lobo - if something hits Polish apple orchards we need to import apples from say Sued Tirol - and these are not the best apples I can think of - last year cold weather in May (almost throughout) meant not only lower yields but also apples simply did not rippen properly before they were picked up (the first time I have ever seen such thing)

btw I haven't seen proper apples in English supermarkets and not really anything worth mentioning in street markets actually - must be Polish and English differ in the notions of what a proper apple is

Wherever I look I see large new 4x4 expensive cars. I didn't know we had so many Board members in Poland.

we have so many crooks simply - ever seen a teacher riding a new SUV???

The same people have PCs, good TV sets, gaming consoles, mobile phones, home-theaters etc. A used car costs same as a good PC. No-having a car because of "poverty" is no excuse.

you must be joking - if most of the households claim to have a PC it does not mean all have the latest things - you can have a decent PC for as low as 500 PLN - those who buy cars for 4000 zl don't buy home-theatres - ever heard of second hand mobile phones - ever heard of second hand domestic appliances

btw you still need to have money to buy fuel for your car to be able to commute - if you need to travel more than 100 km a day it may set you back more than 30 PLN - consider that you start with a minimum wage? - you earn what - 1300 PLN per month - a whopping 70 PLN per work day

Life / Who is poor in Poland? [720]

The number of Polish people who need cars to get work is nowhere near the number who want cars to get to work. Public transport is cheaper and works well, all things considered. I don't have a car and don't want one in Poland (the sheer number of dangerous scary drivers here is another reason to avoid driving).

of all cars bought last year in Poland 90 per cent were second hand - in some areas people are jobless because they can't afford travelling to work - and believe me there are places that public transportation is not reliable in terms of commuting to work and it's getting worse and worse

truskawki can be expensive this year - it is because of may frosts in Wielkopolska and Kujawy (that also destroyed orchards) - but here where I live strawberries are just fine - even the snow fall on may the 3rd haven't harmed their blossom significantly

History / What was it like in 1989+ in Poland when the Soviet house of cards fell? [237]

@ Grubas: I still don't understand how the East Germans made it to West Germany via Poland.

it was only after Poland had its first quasi-democratic government after the war in 1988 i guess - East Germans would come to Poland, drop in the West German consulate/embassy to be issued some immigration papers and off they went to West Germany

even more Eastern Germans escaped through Hungary (they presumably went for vacation in Hungary and in 1988 Hungary dropped border controls on the Austrian border)

Travel / Driving to Poland from England - any tips? [264]

i dont suppose anyone knows of any web sites that show petrol stations on maps or anything like that?

I think corporate websites should have such but of course every brand only have the map of their own stations

Language / The usage and future of the special Polish letters: ą, ć, ę, ł, ń, ó, ś, ż, ź (Polish language) [203]

I think most borrowings in Polish was from IndoEuropean in fact (Latin, German, English, French).

of course it is true - Polish (and generally slavic) had actually little contact with non-indoeuropean languages in its history

what I mean Indoeuropean languages in general gained a lot of vocabulary through contact with non-IE languages - and some of it sifted into the Polish language through borrowings from other IE languages (Germanic, Romance, Greek)

What does 'vremya' mean?

time, moment - u mienia niet vriemieni - nie mam czasu

w eto wriemia - w tym momencie,

czas means godzina in Russian (w połowinie trietich czasow - w pół do trzeciej, w dwa czasa - o godzinie drugiej, czieriez tri czasa - za trzy godziny)

the most absorbing is the appearance and disappearance of certain lexemes in some Slavic languages

yes - for me it is even more interesting how much vocabulary we actually lost since the times of Proto-IndoEuropean (and it seems to me we lost tonns) - what I guess much what has been gained was through acquisition (borrowing) from non-IndoEuropean languages

Language / Need advice on how to improve Polish language skills [134]

oh well, I have just remembered one other source of problem in Polish ortography

words like dania and Dania - they look the same but are pronunced differently (dania - dishes (as in first dish - pierwsze danie, second dish-drugie danie - śniadanie also belongs here - but it is the excercise for our foreigner readers to figure where it comes from) and Dania=Danmark)

actually words like Dania (Hiszpania, mania, schizofrenia, kompania, kampania, Kampania, Szampania) are be pronounced as Dańja - such pronounciation is constistent with words like Francja, informacja, gracja, Grecja, Gruzja, Azja (in that that the 'j' is present) - it is also consistent with the pronounciation of Islandia, Bułgaria, Brazylia where also 'j' is present (represented by 'i')

in leszcz and teść, I'd expect the "eszcz" part to sound identical to the "eść", but I'm hearing they would not. The "eść" would sound 'softer', 'palatized' but I'm not sure what that means. The tongue is positioned differently?

yes the tounge is in a different position/shape - actually I think you should play with all those 'hissing' 'whistling' and 'cracking' sounds (all possible that you can make - I'm pretty sure you can pronounce 'ś' and 'sh' afterwards

someone mentioned here before (in a different thread) that Polish especially spoken by women sounds like chirping of birds - if you learn how to imitate the chirping of birds you have learned much of Polish phonetics ;)
