News / Roman Polanski accused of unlawful sex with a minor [403]

@jon357

I believe 2 years from the date it occurred. So if say a woman say a guy raped her 3 years ago the statue of limitations has ended. Again though I'm not 100% certain if its for rape cases but that's generally the rule of thumb. For example I was hit by a drunk driver like 10 years ago and lawyers bugged me nonstop to sue the guy. Some even showed up to my house knocking on my door. As a broke college student delivering pizzas to make ends meet I sure could have used the money I felt bad though bc I didn't want to ruin the guys life. He was the same age as me and was already dealing w a dui so I didn't want to kick him when he was down. However I was sent a hospital/ambulance bill totalling some 10k which my student health insurance covered for the most part but still left a several thousand dollar bill. So long story short eventually I did find a lawyer and we agreed that his insurance would cover my medical bills but that I specifically said I refused to sue him personally. He was the son of a wealthy dentist and wanted to go to the marines so I didn't wanna mess that up for him. Were actually still friends now since we've seen each other so many times bc of this. Anyway the point in getting at is I remember my attorney rushing me to like file everything and set up a court date bc the 2 year statue of limitations was bout to end.

For its opposite. The us justice system is very quick to charge people for crimes esp prior to DNA. If someone say was arrested before DNA testing he or she will have to petition courts get DNA testing on the evidence and all this other stuff. It could take years or decades. Every few months there's a story here how Chicago pd arrested some guy on murder charges and some 5 10 20 years he's cleared and given several million. Unfortunately prison changes a lot of people and half use it wisely other half blow their money and commit criminal acts

News / Roman Polanski accused of unlawful sex with a minor [403]

@jon357

I believe 2 years for everything but murder but don't quote me on that.. Not sure if it applies to things like rape sexual assault etc. To my understanding the only thing in the us that has no statue of limitations is murder and Rico type of stuff.

Also you can't be tried for something before a new law got passed. So if say yesterday you cashed a forged check and tomorrow a law was enacted for such a crime you can't be punished for it.

Also in the us we have double jeapordy so you can't be tried for the same crime twice.

In neither a lawyer nor legal expert so don't take my word for the absolute truth but I'm pretty certain that's generally how it works here. If someone is knowledgeable in this and I've made a mistake plz correct me so we can all know.

USA, Canada / Polonian or Polish food in America better? [26]

@rozumiemnic

Everything has corn syrup in it here its ridiculous. Sweets drinks meats condiments everything you can imagine. Its not healthy at all. Same w sugar contents a little can will state it has 20 grams of sugar in it that's basically like putting 20 tablespoons in a drink.

Even with waters you have to be careful to see if it actually comes from a spring or is just municipal water basically sink water.. Poland springs actually is having a lawsuit now for deceptive marketing.

Honestly I don't know about krakus as I dontnthink I've ever bought it. I've def had it at peoples house. Still tho even like krakus ham tastes no where near as good as like home made fresh from farm/ranch. My grandparents ran a meat distribution business during prl and afterwards (was actually one of the best money makers in prl due to the ration system and general lack of.meat in stores). I see it around all the time but usually I just get hams salami kabanosy cheeses (esp Bulgarian feta) from the deli counter.

Idk to me the food in Europe just seems tastier in general than us. Even lil things like strawberries they're smaller but they're juicer and sweeter imo. Us restaurant food is tasty at lots of restaurants but itsnoftentimes drenched in butter or other things that are kind to the palate but not necessarily healthy. Like the cooked food at good restaurants id say is better in us but in terms of like stuff you can get at stores or the cheaper fast food or lunch food poland and Europe are better hands down

USA, Canada / Polonian or Polish food in America better? [26]

@rozumiemnic

Ya I buy most of my food from polish stores too. Not only are most things cheaper but they're imports from the eu meaning no nasty corn syrup gmos antibiotics hormones and all that nasty stuff.

Although I noticed that the famous polska orenzada has corn syrup in it. I could've sworn that it use to not because I check the ingredients before I buy food or drinks and that's the only carbonated drink I like. Mostly i just drink tea coffee or water but once in a while I use to drink that orenzada

Travel / Question about the Rynek and City of Wroclaw [15]

@Lyzko

Its mostly prostitution and drugs esp amphetamines. In the prl tomes and 90s it was car theft, smuggling of western goods (I.e. levis jeans), gambling and related activites, some human trsfficking and document forgery, some weapon trafficking. The groups were more organized back then now its just small groups of dealers or businessmen who put their cash together to open up a go go club.

<moved from>
@Lyzko

Yeah the rynek in wroclaw is awesome. I have a ton of pics but the tiny file size prevents me from uploading them.

I actually found a bunch of old gas ration stamps from prl times 1987 to be specific in my old medical book. It looks like its printed off old newspapers and says karta bezynowa typ-4 says the type of car registration and then has several months with little stamps that either say bezyna (3 columns a to c) or dodatek. Itd be so easy to counterfeit these lol I'm sure people did back in the day and sold their surplus gas. Most entrepreneurs had a side hustle but many were content with just going to their slow placed government job

Star far away from go go clubs imo. There's a good chance you'll get a spiked drink the worst lap dance of your life and a several thousand dollar credit card bill. They're set up mainly just to scam male tourists.

News / Polish man tries to sell British mother into white slave trade [128]

@Harry

Newspapers pay for stories regardless if they were obrained illegally or even if they're a detriment to national security. Happens all the time. Hackers or employees steal info and sell it to a news organizations.

This guy sounds like the world dumbest kidnapper

Life / Poland: Last Bastion of Europe [54]

@PolishUltras

Well Poland isn't going to turn into France, Germany, Sweden, etc. where we have special urban zones (no go zones), regular riots where entire neighborhoods go ablaze, teenage girls being moved down with ak's, bombings against soft targets, etc. We won't allow it and our government backs us up 100%. We'd rather be poorer than the west but keep our traditions alive and our people safe. We'll accept migrants - as we have - over 1.5 million work permits issues to Ukrainians just last year as well as Georgians and Chechens who assimilate, work and are a net benefit to the society. But we'll be damned if we have to in masses of people who we know nothing about from an entirely different culture, religion, and style of life that spits on liberal European values and Christian tradition. We see what these new comes have done to W. Europe in the past 2-3 years. There were never terrorist attacks in Europe as frequently as there are now. It's like at least once a month there's some kind of stabbing, vehicle ramming, some kind of rape, not to mention the more serious attacks. Plus all the other crimes that these new arrivals commit on natives in the subways - pushing people down the stairs, groping women, mugging people, etc. which gets no media attention. Even the cops say themselves they'll arrest the same perp 20 30 times and he just gets out the very next day and does the same damn thing. Why aren't they deporting them if they're causing crimes - especially crimes like sexual assault, robbery, etc? I don't understand it.

Well Polish society has agreed that we won't tolerate this kind of stuff.

News / Polish man tries to sell British mother into white slave trade [128]

Remember the case of the group of all paki men that groomed some 1,400 young women to be raped, sold into prostitution, gifted, used as sex slaves, etc? This went on for 10 years and apparently the social services and police knew enough about them to arrest them or at least interfere so as to take the girls into state custody. However, they were too scared to be called racist, anti-paki, etc. so they just let it go... Eventually it was too much and they took down the group.

Every nationality, creed, religion, etc. has it's good and bad apples. Poland, UK, Germany, Syria, Russia, etc. are no different. I've been to 3rd world countries where I've felt totally safe and the people were hospitable on a level unlike any developed country I've been to. Yet in other 3rd world countries where I wouldn't walk outside without carrying something to protect myself. It's the same in Poland - you can walk into one blok and be totally fine and walk into another and a bunch of guys can jump you in the klatka if you appear weak and won't put up much of a fight.

Real Estate / How Poles can pay wlasny? (mortgage) [16]

@jon357

Interest and inflation are what causes poverty and misery. These are the worst two inventions of man imo. Our entire world economy is basically based on swapping debt contracts and charging for doing it.

My grandpa runs a small kantor in a small town and all the time people come in to change out thousands of pounds and euros at a time. Dollars are a bit more rare.

I know for a fact many elderly people keep lots of foreign cash in their house as a sort of hedge. Many remember the communist years and instability plus many don't have a whole lot of trust in banks. I can't really blame em. Only problem is if you're just keeping a bunch of money laying around that money becomes worth less and less as time goes on.

Real Estate / How Poles can pay wlasny? (mortgage) [16]

Jon is right about that - don't let their small salaries fool you. Polish people are savers generally esp the older generations and money is passed on through the family through businesses, real estate, inheritance, etc. They may make a small salary but they're frugal and smart with their money - they save and invest it too. Its not like the us (in general of course) where people spend more money in a year than their annual salary. Of course there are those that live beyond their means like everywhere but in general poles don't live beyond their means.

Also a lot of poles work abroad like in Germany then they come back to poland and spend the money they made there.

Notice even at the galerie (large shopping malls) there will be tons of people walking around but most are just window shopping. They'll walk around and maybe have just 1 shopping bag per group or family. They may buy like 1 shirt or a pair of shoes but they don't go on like massive shopping sprees or buy a ton of stuff in one trip to the mall. When I was in poland last time I was literally the only person with a shopping cart in the entire mall. I bought a lot of dress shoes, button down shirts, etc bc they're very high quality and way cheaper than here. However name brands esp athletic companies like Adidas Nike etc cost more than in us in general. For example a nice dress shirt can be purchased for 80 to 120 zl wheras in the us a similar shirt would cost at least $50, $70, $100 plus

Work / Studies In Poland, is it easy to survive on part-time jobs? [259]

@mafketis

In us and probably uk as well as other western countries though they could. I paid my way through a bachelors and graduated debt free which is extremely rare nowadays through a mix of a few small scholarships but mostly working as a waiter, delivery driver, and towards the last year of college as a commodity broker. However I worked full time and it took me 6 years to get a bachelors which normally takes 4 although I took a break to work as a broker and didn't take any classes between years 5 and 6. When I was working at a restaurant during the week id typically work around 7 pm to 3:30 4 am, wake up around 11, go to class then work again.. I usually worked 6 days a week. However I was averaging around $20 $25 even up to $30 an hour cash (min wage plus around $140 to $160 in tips. Some nights I made over $200 in tips though). Only downside is my grades were bad as I never had time to study for more than a few hours and i wore my body out doing that. I don't regret it though.

In poland though the wages for low skill jobs are very very low. For example a security guard at some mall makes around 9 10 zloty an hour. Idk how much a waiter makes but ppl leave small tips in poland - they typically just round off the bill.

I personally think it would be nearly impossible to pay for schooling, rent, bills etc on a student type job in poland without receiving some sort of extra financial help.

Work / Studies In Poland, is it easy to survive on part-time jobs? [259]

@jon357

It's 9250 pounds per year to be exact.. However I'm sure that figure will probably At least double once things like housing, books, random fees, food, etc is calculated. I'm not familiar at all w the English uni system but based on my travels and corporate experience i think its safe to say hell probably make more money working in the west w a biology degree than in pl. He stated that bio grads typically don't make much more than 4k at most 5k zloty starting out in pl. I never researched it myself but it sounds about right. Even doctors in hospitals in pl make very little.

However he himself doesn't have the money for it and I guess has to use some 3rd party for a student loan. I urged him to be extremely cautious but ultimately its his future I can give him advice but I can't tell him what to do. Unfortunately his/my grandma and grandpa spoiled him and his mom to the point where working is a foreign concept. Back when they had their health and a ran like 5 businesses they could've paid for all that but not anymore. I already know they're trying to butter me up to give him money. I will help him get a job and teach him how to save and invest but I refuse to be swiety mikolaj.

@delphiandomine
Yes there's an increasing amount of jobs for non polish English speakers - restaurants, hotels, some corporate customer service, etc. You are right though most are the student type jobs though

Work / Studies In Poland, is it easy to survive on part-time jobs? [259]

I honestly don't remember. I know it was in london though. I'm not an admissions advisor or anything but experience tells me based on my own applications to unis in the us that a toefl is required or at least highly recommended for non native English speakers to the more prestigious unis. Ill ask him though next time I talk to him which school(s) he was interested in.

I know that from my moms side a rather well to do uncle sent his two kids to study in england. I mean surely a decent British school will be more recognized and respected than a polish one. They'll probably have a better future or at least high earnings than if they stayed in pl.

Work / Studies In Poland, is it easy to survive on part-time jobs? [259]

@rozumiemnic

Yea he's polish. He just finished matura and he applied to 2 programs at wroclaw uni - one for microbiology and the other experimental biology or genetics something like that. Well he didn't get in apparently the acceptance rate was only around 9 10% for those programs (by comparison Harvard b school has an 11 12% acceptance rate). We just had a long argument on whether he should take the toeffl or not but he insists his English matura score is enough. I still think he should take it tho...

That's awesome see society should reward people for getting an education. A bachelors in the us just means you'll at least make 35 40k a year and pay your college debts till your 40. Now if someone gets a starting salary of 45 50k w a bachelors that's considered high. I know some doctors that are nearing retirement and are still paying student loans off. Unfortunately I don't think a system would be sustainable like that in the us anymore. The only people who really get paid anymore to go to school are PhDs because they do research for the uni but its more of a stipend than like a decent salary.

The mbas vary greatly in price in the us. It varies from a low 30k 40k for mba to 70k 90k all the way to 160k. Utter insanity. You can get an online mba of course from a no name school for like 15k but that doesn't really do you much good.

Work / Studies In Poland, is it easy to survive on part-time jobs? [259]

Yeah I'm just wondering why there's such a huge cost difference between the English mba and the polish one. Sgh is very respected even during commie times its where a lot of prominent people graduated from or sent their kids to attend.

However I've already decided to attend a us school. Just seems like a safer option even if I did decide to work in poland for a us corp in the future.

A person would have to be pretty much set on living and working in poland forever if they wanted to go to sgh. They'll make great money by polish standards even median salaries for a bachelors from sgh reach 10k zl and up. Unfortunately though it appears that sgh doesn't have an aacsb certification which is usually the international gold standard for b schools. Why they never bothered to get this certification is beyond me. The top eu schools like insead Erasmus oxford etc all have them and even a few polish ones do but I've never heard of them I.e. kozminski university which in guessing is some bogus private school yet they have aacsb and sgh doesn't : /

My cousin is actually looking into studying in England. He found a school he really likes for 9k pounds a year. I predict a phone call in the near future asking me for money....

@DominicB

I wonder if SGH is in on this scam... This is one school that I considered going to in Poland. They have 2 MBA programs - one in Polish and one in English. However, the English one despite being held at SGH campus gives a diploma from University of Montreal upon completion. I couldn't find hardly any info on this school on their website and a link just referred back to the English MBA at SGH.

oferta.sgh.waw.pl/en/MBA/Pages/default.aspx

cemba.pl/admission/tuition-fees

Makes me wonder if this too is bogus... sad that arguably the best business school in PL had to resort to this.

I would think that an MBA from SGH would take you further in Poland than some unknown Canadian school, but I could be wrong... On the other hand, outside of Poland an MBA from a Canadian school will probably take you further than a Polish one... I could be wrong though...

Also that program costs 30k zloty plus $9k usd... not a small sum for poland

Work / Salary for a senior software engineer in Poland [195]

I don't know but I highly doubt ull be put in the zus program right away. I could be wrong but I'd assume youd have to pay out of pocket till you're covered. Medical practice in poland is very cheap and professional though.

A lot of Indians move to poland to work it engineering and other hard skill jobs for corps in poland. However few stay as they go westward. Personally idk why because yeah in say the us or w Europe you may make 70k to 120k USD depending on your skill level experience type of company and location but expenses are far more. Imo itd probably be easier to save money on a high salary in poland than w Europe. Although some countries like Ireland don't have very high costs of living like London or Paris. Berlin and the rest of Germany was like that too for a long time although I'm sure the migrant crisis has created more of a housing demand hence increasing costs.

Yea I agree with atch. Comparing Irish and dutch salaries with polish isn't a apples to apples comparison. Also one thing to note is in poland usually international corps tend to pay more than polish ones.

News / Officials in Poland are hailing an upcoming visit by Donald Trump [720]

Well poland has a some 9 bil dollar trade surplus with Germany, around 8 with uk and 6 with czechy. Nonetheless around a quarter of pl exports go to Germany.

However that doesn't really mean much. Trade partnerships can be destroyed and formed in no time. For example a 20 bil trade deficit with China would be unthinkable in poland just a few years ago.

Poland relies too much on Europe for trade as it is. Although Poland's been doing a lot more business with less traditional eu partners like Romania instead of just relying on rich western nations. They need to seek new partners both for import and export outside of eu especially eastward. At least they've started to look outside the box and develop partnerships in places like India bangladesh and even Africa now.

That happens in the us quite often. There's regularly news stories about people who kmow they're infected will purposely sleep with others in the hopes of spreading it. When I was in college I remember a guy spread it to over 20 women yet only got like 4 or 8 years for it. Quite sad.

Asimov died from hiv? That I did not know...

Interferon and ribavirin, the most common anti hiv cocktail, makes people feel like they have the flu all the time. But people can exercise eat right etc and feel quite normal. Look at shaq that guys had hiv as long as I've been alive. In the 80s it was a death sentence. 5 10 years and you were done.

@jon357

Very true. There are meds one can take after say having unprotected sex or a nurse who pricked her finger on a needle. Those typically have to be taken right after exposure. The highest incidence rates for hiv tend to be highest for gays in the us especially gay black men. Drug use I.e. sharing needles account for only about 10%

The meds you're referring to for hiv infected people like interferon will actually make a persons viral load basically zero. However if they stop taking it their viral load will go up immediately. Furthermore people on those meds complain that they feel like crap all the time like they have a clue.

I use to work for a medical waste company and i dealt with everyone to the corner dentist to the enormous county hospital. I wasn't responsible for taking it out but more so selling an appropriate sized service level and writing accompanying contract. I can tell you nurses and doctors were way more concerned with hepatitis c because its far more easily spread. It doesn't die after being exposed to oxygen and it can linger on a surface for weeks even a month.!
