News / Tusk drops Chinese COVEC building the A2 motorway in Poland [83]

I wish them the best - even just to play with the nerves of those black ravens that just appeared on TV - cawing and enjoying themselves. "Whatever Midas touched, it turned into gold, whatever Tusk touches it turns to the one - you know what" - says Kurski. Clever!

I still think the GDDKiA has little money which reflects the state of Polish finances - they probably now bet on getting those 700 million penalty fee off the Chinese - we will see what happens if the state (GDDKiA) takes the construction over (if there is enough money to pay to those subcontractors so they continue the work)

I am no expert on economy but according to official data tax revenues dropped between 2009 and 2010 by over 10 per cent - at the same time GDP was claimed by the government to raise over 1 per cent - maybe GDP calculation methodology allows for such results - I don't know - still you can expect financial trouble looming (the spendings haven't been cut that much so you end up with higher budget deficit)

News / What Polish political party are you in favour of and why [6]

PiS - though I don't like the leadership of Jarosław Kaczyński and the way the party evolved in the last years (getting rid of many bright people)

I thought about voting for PJN for a while - a small splinter of PiS - but they behaved even more ridiculously than PiS (though not in the same manner)

why? - because no other party appart PiS stand for ideals I can connect to (I would vote for Korwin-Mikke's party if had no choice cause I know they are honest, well meaning people though I don't agree with sectarian doctrinaire liberalism they stand for)

I'm very much like yourself in these regards

so lets say the reports were correct and prices did rise by 198% between 2004-2008

I call it property bubble - so many people earned so much they had no idea what to do with the money but buying a property - I say the good percantage of that money must have been made in shady ways (or otherwise abroad)

Life / Struggling young Polish couple - try to solve their problem [176]

that's far less than the supposedly 3,600zl national average.

3600 national average is gross - so it's like 2400 net - and still I don't know where do they take these 3600 from if most people in salary get around 2000 PLN gross (and millions get less than that)

The same thing other young people do: go abroad for two-three years, save money, come back and buy an apartment.

pretty much obsolete - where'd go - to the UK??? - perhaps Germany is an option or Norway

News / Tusk drops Chinese COVEC building the A2 motorway in Poland [83]

This does not make any sense.

if you insist on having the roads built in time for EURO 2012 then you should be a little bit more flexible - even if you have chosen the wrong company in spite of being warned (and the government was most probably wrong) - if they are not flexible Poland will end up with no motorways ready to move people around the stadiums - and this means a DISGRACE - young Poles in their masses voted for PO instead of PiS to end up a perceived disgrace - the rule is the more you fear something the more you attract it - we have put an end to a perceived disgrace and we will end up with a very real one

then there is evidence GDDKiA was delaying payments for other contractors on different sections of the motorways in construction - there must be something really bad with the state of state finances in my oppinion

According to your previous posts, there are too many houses/flats, the market is saturated with unsold properties

the thing is the price - the two scenarios are possible - either the developers can't sell at lower prices because they will have no real income from them or they won't sell at lower prices beacuse they want to have a 'decent' income (appartments do not rot so they can wait for a while) - I think it is the second scenario rather than the first one and the prices will eventually drop by some 20 per cent - at the same time you see empty apartments in newly developed property you also see mushrooming new single-family houses

News / Tusk drops Chinese COVEC building the A2 motorway in Poland [83]

what's up with that National Stadium gumishu? Will it be completed in time, or the first few matches moved to an another city?

there is some flaws in the design - it will postpone the opening of the stadium well beyond the 6th of September (the planned Poland-Germany match) - it is not the only problem though -

gumishu:
the government of success - this is how this success looks like - motorways for EURO 2012? - crucial sections will be missing

Oh come on! You didn't really ever think that the roads would be ready by then did you? Next thing you'll be saying that the rail upgrade work will also be finished by then. And even the Warsaw metro too!

it was one of the PO goverment promises to have the motorways ready for the EURO 2012 - and there is some circumstancial evidence GDDKiA is not living up to this (also financially - but not only)

The Chinese have built so far 10% of the highway so they got 10% (130m out of 1.3bn contract) of the deal. The amount what they paid to subcontractors is their problem - it only shows they underpriced the deal while bidding.

If the deal is broken they will have to pay ZL750m fine to Poland. Idiots.

if you want to have the motorway built you need to be more flexible with payments - unless this is the case that we can't possibly afford to do that (because we don't have the money - read the state finances are in tatters)

That is why the Polish will start to move to Germany(big time) if the government don't start governing the country and dealing with the main issues like housing and wages.

hundreds of thousands of Poles already work in Germany - hundreds of thousadns of Polish women tend to the elderly Germans (my mom used to - many Polish women I know do) - they won't resettle though - they live in the homes of those Germans - hundreds of thousands Polish men work there as builders - they do not resettle either - they leave their homes and families in Poland beacuse it is more economical - you won't see many Poles settling in Germany even for short periods and the reason is Germany is so close everybody can be home every couple of weeks

Law / Interesting Phenomenon with used cars in Poland [17]

btw cars with real readings of 0-5000km in Poland were in fact hardly used - I knew people who owned but hardly used their cars - but it is a thing of the past rather

these were mostly elderly people

If following the Greek etymology strictly, then yes. But convention has bequeathed us odometer. BTW Latin importations from Greek (in the Roman period, I mean now) often equivocate between written and unwritten 'h', as in harena -- arena.

thanks for clearing this thing :)

btw etymology online insists there is a direct connection with the Greek word hodos (way) with Slavic 'chodit' (Polish chodzić)

odometers

shouldn't this thing be called hodometer rather than odometer (there is a term hodograf in Polish geological vocabulary that I couldn't find in English)

News / Tusk drops Chinese COVEC building the A2 motorway in Poland [83]

the Polish-Macedonian consortium that was building a section of a A4 somewhere between Kraków and Tarnów also dropped the job - the main reason the consortium stated was they haven't received payments from the GDKDiA on time - I think this is also the case here - this reflects the state of Polish finances too by the way - you just won't here it from the government especially with the elections in sight (and the success propaganda this government runs with the help of some media)

News / Tusk drops Chinese COVEC building the A2 motorway in Poland [83]

this is the question of Polish government not paying the building companies on time - the Chinese claim they have only received some 130 million PLN from the state while they have already spent 240 million

(for what it's worth, I looked in one shop yesterday - apples were going for as cheap as 0.50zl/kg)

they won't last long now - it's nothing but an apple sale

I don't know guys - maybe they have exported so much (to pay the installments after taking billions in credit) - as Polish manufacturing industry products were not readily accepted in the West (often because of not so high quality but also because little systematic supporst and logisitic issues) they relied on selling low-proceseed products including agricultural produce (coal was a very important export item) - then again Poland paid the price 'of being in a friendly relationship' with our Big Brother to the east - I have an anectode about it that my mum told me from her first hand experience - she worked for PKP and visited a foundry in Ozimek or Zawadzkie - what she saw there were freshly made steel girders that had 'Sdelano in SSSR' (made in the Soviet Union) inscripted on them - maybe this is also were some part of Polish agricultural produce went

Estonians have been mining shale oil for many years; i understand shale gas might be different?

very different - you don't have gas shale outcrops - i.e. you don't get gas in shales that are on or close to the surface - geostatic pressure is a necessary factor for gas to remain in shales in commercially significant amounts

as far as I know oil shales are exploited from their outcrops and not much if any deep mining is involved - there is some oil shales in the Carpathians too but not that productive as those in Estonia and not that geologically convenient for exploitation

Well, maybe yes, maybe not. PGNiG has a long-time experience with oil & gas exploration. They might chose a West European or a Canadian investor, for example, and have you thought about STATOIL?

as far as I know only Americans have the reqiured technology (or maybe Canadians too)

experience in typical gas exploration is of not so much value when it comes to shale gas - I know a bit about it (my education profile)

Americans the British and Australians were exploring gas in Poland Antek when you were still driving your Polonez or maluch (it was conventional gas and some testing for deep gas in Carpathians (I still think the Carpathians have good prospects of yielding substantial gas from deep rigs - but deep drilling is VEEERY expensive)

But the overall investment standing of USA is quite insignificant . Take a look on a report in my previous post . Some 85 % of total investment in Poland comes out of EU countries .

USA is not any player in Poland`s economy . It is actually smaller than Hungary or Czech Republic .

it can be much different if the shale gas is going to be developed

100 per cent debt means that a year GDP of the country would be spent in its whole if the country wanted to repay the debt in a year - if I understand that correctly

Life / Who is poor in Poland? [720]

What's undeniable is that in Poland, there's a very serious problem with parental neglect resulting in children living in poverty. There's also a serious problem with children and school books - the current system of requiring children to buy textbooks is an utter disgrace.

in some 10 years whoever is gonna run this country will have stickers all around him saying - education, you fool

Life / Who is poor in Poland? [720]

All this talk of children going to school hungry - even if you're desperately poor, what does it cost to buy a few vegetables and prepare them to be eaten?

children need to eat properly or else they won't grow up properly - no amount of vegetables will make them grow this way (or maybe only beans)

Are you doing anything to help them, Gumishu?

let those help who can - if you ask if I have ever given any money to charity the answer is yes

btw - I am not saying this report clearly shows reality - I don't know really poor children personally

Life / Who is poor in Poland? [720]

is Poland poor - I don't know

but

The report prepared by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development says that the Poles spend on children least of all the 32 countries belonging to the organization.

The material situation of children in Poland was rated as the worst among 21 European countries and by UNICEF .

Norwegians seem to keep the child almost ten times more than the Statistical Poles . As a result, 1.8 million children in Poland suffer from poverty .
the article is about OECD and UNICEF raports on children - the title of the article is Our poor children
