News / Poland's political crisis deepens [228]

She is the person the population elected democratically

Not quite how it works in Poland though I get your point. She won the election for them in _spite_ of Kaczyński and the second the election was over he tried to shove her into the shadows and has belittled her consistently. He's a sexist little prig, fine with benefitting from a woman's work but not so happy to actually share power with one, even if she's the one who got him the power in the first place.

his anti-Soviet activity lasted almost 20 years. That is not a small feat.

But it is not a suitable qualification for the position he now holds...

News / The first PiS led government in 2005 lasted just over 2 years in Poland. [129]

Consumption is growing, buying power has increased, production is growing, unemployment is at its lowest level in 25 years

In other words, PiS was lying through its teeth abou a ruined economy. There's no way to turn around a ruined economy in a little over a year.

Have they thought to thank PO for the sound fundamentals?

Didn't think so.....

But to be clear, PiS are no saints. They're braindead populists who stirred up more sh!t with their retarded decissions than they should

They campaign so hard on the platform of "It's a rotten crooked system!" they have to break the law to maintain any credibility with their gullible followers.

Their defence minister is borderline retarded

You're far more charitable than I am. I think he's mentally ill.

their commie persecution mania is so strong even I'm against it (and all commies should hang imo), because they are going to hurt decent people too

What do you expect? They're all about creating paper targets for the base to get riled up over. Meanwhile they have a loyal communist party member (there till the bitter end) as one of their public faces for decommunization. It's an old PRL tactic - make your followers appear to believe lies. Then they're complicit and have no choice but to follow.

their blatant power grabs and shady proceedings lately are worrisome

That's what all the other hubbub is supposed to cover up. Internally it's a kleptocracy all about diverting public resources to themselves and their chronies.

There's a complete and utter lack of reason and common sense in our politics

Sadly true. I would say that it won't get better till JK's generation dies off but chances are they're poisoning the young (they've certainly tarnished all the younger talent in the party).

News / Demonstrations in Poland in defence of democracy. [2554]

Some claim that that the law of rule is possible only when the post-PZPR/post-KOR clique are in power

That does seem to be the case, doesn't it? For a lawyer, JK seems to hate the idea of having to follow the law.

their backers and stoogres alone enjoy the fruits of transformation

That is just demented. No one with their eyes open can deny that Poland has benefitted enormously over the last 20 or so years, or would you prefer to go back to 1996 living standards?

And that to you is preferable to a government of the people, by the people and for the people?

If you can think that PiS is out to help anyone but themselves and their cronies, then you be crazy!

Because JK was utterly formed by te PRL and is furious at the idea of any opposition being allowed to exist. Is there any record of him being able to deal with any opposition whatsoever?

News / Poland's political crisis deepens [228]

Normally this wouldn't fly, but currently ruling party they have more than 50% of MPs, so they have necessary quorum to pass most laws just by themselves. And by doing that, they made oppostion and their "occupy wall street/plenary chamber" absolutely pointless.

Well Ziobro at least was caught breaking the law, singing the attendance list after the "session" ended, so there might not have been a quorum after all.

PiS at this point is all about sh1tting on the rule of law in favor of rule by party leader - just the like PRL.

News / Poland refuses to give jobs to British [19]

Any British person who has the skills which are necessary for Poland will find a job, even if their Polish language skills are minimal.

The general rule of thumb, the less Polish skills you have the better your other qualifications have to be.

There are thousands of jobs in Finance (as long as you meet their requirements).

Which probably mean keeping abreast of regulations which are in Polish (English translations of Polish laws are notoriously awful and not to be relied upon).

Poland is not for ex-pats who just want to bum around.

Unless they don't need to work in Poland (because they're independently wealthy, or do telewok so their location doesn't matter, etc)

But yeah, showing up, even with some marketable skills, with no knowledge of the language or culture is not gointo lead to employment for most people.

It doesn't change the fact that you side with the post-communist, soviet incompetent corrupted scum

If it makes you happy to believe that, then go ahead knock yourself out (may I suggest a baseball bat?)

That kind that would support Hillary.

didn't vote for her

t every time an attempt is made to finally bring SB cirminals to justice

Maybe they're just really bad and incompetent?

Here's a hint: If you want to lower PRL official's pensions then DON'T MAKE A PUBLIC PROSECUTOR FROM THE PRL YOUR PUBLIC FACE!!! DON'T SCHEDULE A BUNCH OF OTHER STUFF GUARANTEED TO RILE PEOPLE UP AT THE SAME TIME!!!

You say vast communist conspiracy, I say incompetent corrupt bumblers.

News / Poland's political crisis deepens [228]

Poland's right-wing ruling party positioned itself as being in the vanguard of an anti-elitist and anti-liberal zeitgeist sweeping through the West

Except that it isn't. There's not enough migration to Poland to spur the kind of movements that have gained traction in western countries (and Hungary, not a goal of migration but disrupted by it nonetheless).

And the EU isn't unpopular enough in Poland for it to gain traction that way either.

PiS represents a return to PRL ways and mostly appeals to those who did not benefit from the end of the PRL (and low information voters who are bought off by

nothing more than Brussels puppets...

So "rule of law" is now a Brussels scheme? How very PRLish.

UK, Ireland / Job interview - recruitment process in the UK [26]

No, it's illegal in the UK as you are not paying tax/NI,

No, I mean legal work that's taxed but has no benefits whatsoever (no sick days, or paid vacation, no access to health insurance, stuff like that). I had a part time job like that for a time as a student and a friend once worked at a law firm on that basis (her hourly was pretty high so it worked for her).

UK, Ireland / Job interview - recruitment process in the UK [26]

Black Money is a term used in Spain, India, US

I've never heard black economy, but I have heard of the grey economy, black economy suggests the black market which is something different.

I've heard it before but from talking to Poles. They also use 'under the table' to mean the same thing.

I was first thinking it was a literal translation of 'na czarno' the standard way of referring to that kind of work in Polish. There's also 'na lewo' (on the left) but I don't think people use it much anymore, it might have been a loan from Russian.

In the US I think 'off the books' is the most common. 'under the table' is maybe more about corruption (paying an official to do or not do their job).

"Cash in hand" suggests legal work without benefits (a thing in the US, not sure about the UK).

he just works on the black

Is this an expression in the UK? I've seen it twice in this thread and never before in my life.

The meaning is clear enough in context, but... weird.

what rights have been taken away from yo

The idea is to be pro-active, the government is clearly wanting to make it as difficult as possible to criticize or challenge anything they do. If you don't see that then don't complain when it does inconvenience you.

when the inflated fat-cat pensions of SB types were downsized to the average level, we are witnesssing another attempt at destabilisation

And restricting public demonstrations and media access to the Sejm had nothing to do with it....... riiiiiiiggghhhtt.

The problem is your boy JK cannot stand the slightest bit of dissent or disagreement. He's really a pathological character.

Reporters with pencil and pad crawling all over the place is rather obsolete in the 21st century when there are much better methods of news gathering.

Could Jerzy Urban have put it any better?

The brainwashed Marxists elite

Marxists??!!?? In ...... Poland?!!!!?!? HA HA HA HA HA HA HA!!!! Even in the PRL no one in Poland knew the first thing about Marxism....

the legions in the provinces that voted democratically for this government, they will do well to bear this in mind.

Winning an election is now license to muzzle the indpendent media and break the law?

Really?

All that ruckus because few privileged criminals from the soviet political police are about to loose privileges.

Actually the main reason for the protests are that PiS is trying to muzzle journalism and most PiS parliamentarians clearly broke the law by signing in after session was closed, a wildcat probably illegal sessions but....

Most countreis do not let media have the free run of parliament

Then it's very good that Poland honors the idea of freedom of the press! Public scrutiny and transparency for government! Where I'm from they used to call it "Government in the Sunshine".

Reporters swarming all over only created chaos

You mean "oversight" and "scrutiny"

which the governmetn wished to eliminate.

Yes, criminals do not really like oversight and scrutiny. We completely agree.

Show me one country where

the rule of law is broken by the government which is headed by a backbencher manipulating his powerless puppets to speak through him?

Ya got me, I can't think of another European country where the rule of law is under such sustained attack from the government as Poland is right now.

Probably illegally, since there were a number of.... irregularities, including signing in after voting in clear violation of the law.

But you're completely okay with the attempt by the government to muzzle the press (except for the lacky propaganda that they've turned public media into)

You can take the boy out of the PRL, but....

Exactly! PiS is trying to recreate the PRL through very shady means. This morning police were keeping journalists out of the parliament building.

Speaking of KOD, their back in business, trying to prevent PiS from turning Poland into the PRL bis

The "only report good news about us" government has decided to severely restrict media coverage of the Sejm (except for their loyal lap dogs at state companies).

After throwing out a PO MP for expressing his disclosure at that opposition parties blocked the speaker's platform.

PiS, who have never cared about the law, retired to another room and without a quorum began passing legislation counting raised hands.

Always good to remember, a vote for PiS is a vote for banana-republic antics in the name of empty populism.

News / Demonstrations in Poland in defence of democracy. [2554]

Poland is in danger of turning full circle and is gradually becoming a police state with a totalitarian government.

no it's not, it has not very competent government doing incompetent clueless things that te country will easily survive, Poles don't do totalitarian and even martial law (the worst of the PRL) wasn't as bad as normal operations in East Germany or Romania...

Poland's apathy will keep it from crazy extremes.

there are still dark forces left over from communist times eager to support all that is left wing and marxist.

uhhhh how long have you been living here now? I'm over 20 years and those "dark forces" don't exist beyond the fevered imaginations of a few rabble rousers like Rydzyk or Kaczyński.

Love / My Polish Girlfriend Broke Up With Me Very Suddenly, Did She Use Me? [23]

There is no way I am going to read through all te OP's adolescent angst.... I'll just note.

Polish women often separate their emotions from their tactics. If a Polish woman decides the relationship doesn't fit her life goals she will end it rapidly and with surgical precision. How she feels is irrelevant. Foreign guys usually never see this coming (Polish guys know the signals more and are more likely to either see the breakup coming or try to prevent it by upping his commitment level).

First loves can be painful but ultimately there are too many fish in the sea to get too hung up over any one. Going forward, remember the good, learn what you can from the bad and stay frosty.
