my only point is Silesian dialect/language (whatever suits you) is not a mixed Slavic-Germanic language - it is just a Slavic language that has been influenced by German language mainly in the form of word borrowings (because it was outside of the Polish state culture and in the German state culture) and some language calque contstructions - btw many of these word borrowings are at the moment barely recogniseable to a German-speaking person

one more point - kiery - it is not a Czech word by any measure

Antek must simply be not aware of a phenomenon that is called a dialect continuum and that Silesian is a part of a dialect continuum between Polish and Czech

I don't know if it has anything to do with Poland being catholic - homosexuality in England was stil a crime back in the 50's still (see Alan? Turing's case) - it wasn't a criminal thing in Poland as soon as 1919 - negative attitudes against homosexuals are actually a manifestation of deeply rooted insecurity of Polish males (they seem more manly to themselves when they despise homosexuals)(which is a result of their upbringing (lack of male role models) and the form of education that is dominant in Poland - this phenomenon is rather a fresh one (the last 50 years) and strong anti-homosexual feelings are only there for some 20 years

though Ukrainian is an East Slavic language it borrowed a lot from Polish or inherited the same common slavic vocabulary and also it shares a couple of phonetical developements with Polish - when you add to that that Poles were obligatory learning Russian you end up with Ukrainian sounding more familiar to Polish ears than Czech

as for Slovak - I can only say from my own experience - Slovak I have heard sounded like Czech with Polish accent - they say (wikipedia says) eastern slovak dialects resemble Polish even more right up to having identical fixed accent (the penultimate syllable) and similar sound developements

the Czech language is not funny to me anymore after I have watched a lot of Czech TV - it's just a normal language - I would say Slovak (because it would sound a strange variety of Czech to me) or even more so Serbo-Croatian would sound funny and strange to me - I think it's a matter of getting used to a language (if you have some prejudices it is definitely an obstacle - I guess I had little prejudice towards the Czech language)

Czech spoken language in the times of Bila Hora catastrophe was already very different from Polish and Czech dialects that the revived literary language was based on just retained the differences - in effect there actually was little in conscious effort necessary to try to make Czech resemble Polish as little as possible

I have never heard these names pronounced or spelled the way you spelled it - I only know a couple of musicians and all of them they say rif for riff (and not ryf) - and you see riff in music publication and no ryfs there

brydż to me is a card game - if I was to call this kind of brigde I would call it bridge (bridż) and not brydż
