News / Where is 'the first contact with the ground' of the Polish Airforce One [17]

is it possible the pilot got a false reading due to atmospherics and the fog ?

QNH = height above sea level

QFE = height above point of measurement

So say Smolensk for instance. It's 720ft above sea level.

If the plane is on the ground, and the altimeter has the QNH pressure, it would read 720

If it is QFE it would read 0

the finest pilots? messing around with the systems???

Just confusion. It can get hectic up front. We'll see soon enough, but accidents happen. Even to the best of them.

mast, possibly. VHF aerial i doubt.

It would make sense, the NDBs in former soviet countries are usually lined up with the runway.

History / Why did Hitler kill so many Jews in Poland? [261]

If I am racist with this statement, then I wonder what you are with your many anti-Jewish posts?

Hahaha, you're racist for comparing Jews to Poles. How dare you!

Travel / Stag Parties in Kraków [119]

the ONLY reason they go to Warsaw or Krakow is because its cheap, nothing more nothing less.

Punish the offending action. Immediately. Banning advertising and crap like that ends up just turning the people passive aggressive and people will continue to ***** and moan. Don't like offensive behavior? Enact legislation to counter it. It worked in Prague.

Travel / Stag Parties in Kraków [119]

The Polish authorities banning both the adverts encouraging them and the Polish companies who organise them would go a long way to stopping this.

Why punish the stag party? Just punish the bad behavior and they'll go away. The more that come, the quicker clubs will ban them, the quicker they will go away.

yes, Krakow really appreciates people pissing on every monument in town...

Just pass legislation that makes public urination subject to a 1000zl fine or a night in jail. Problem solved.

News / Is it possible that Polish president was assasinated? If so then, by whom? [921]

e conducted the sabotage is a completely different question).

Hopefully they've managed to preserve the chain of custody... from what's been reported, Poles have been with the CVR and the flight data recorder the entire time. Too much room for conspiracy otherwise.

Travel / Stag Parties in Kraków [119]

the economy is finally thriving due to the fact Brits WILL travel "just to find a prostitute" and WILL travel "just for cheap beer".

Not really. Just look at Prague. Stag parties mostly consisted of a bunch of poor to middleclass people coming over looking to spend the least amount of money possible. It wasn't worth the hassle for most clubs, so they started banning stag parties. Then the prices went up, and the stag parties moved on as it was no longer priced at a level that they could afford. Prague is doing just fine having traded cheap stag groups for middle class tourists that can afford to pay the prices.

ing soon with a bunch of guys and I personally hope to be up to my nuts in guts within a few hours or arriving. I heard the girls from one of the many "cultural" strip bars will drop their knickers at your hotel for £30-£40! bargain!

Just wrap it up, remember, the women here aren't tested like in Germany or Holland. You're probably not the first, and won't be the last stag party that has plowed through.

Enjoy while you can, things are getting more expensive. Looking forward to hearing about stags going to Kazakhstan in a few years.

News / Russian air traffic controllers ignored communication protocol of Polish pilots? [194]

with over 10000 hours flying experience.

Which is about the same amount of hours that Scott Turner, Commander of Air Force One, had when he took over that job. Interestingly enough, he's just a bit older than the pilot on the Polish presidential flight. Usually air force staff get moved into a management role after 40-45. Remember that commercial is where most people go after the retire from the service. People like Gen. Jumper of the USAF has just over 5000 hours. Interestingly enough, the statistics on fatalities vs. flight hours graphs out to a curve with the first 500 being the highest, then it troughs, and at around 6000 hours, it begins to increase again.

Off-Topic / Polish head of state plane crashed in middle of nowhere? [56]

I'm sorry if I offended you. Last time I visited Poland was 16 years ago.

Not my quote. Mine was better

And most importantly, Pilot thought he could land the plane.

Pilot came down to try an (NDB) approach, why he descended past DH is a good question though...

Exactly, Havok, exactly. However, word has it that they should have informed the plane long before and they conveniently didn't. Quite slack some would say.

They were told about the weather first by Belorussian ATC (when the IL-76 diverted).

What would you rather have. 20 year old Ford Mustang or 20 years old Classic Volga?

Me personally? I'd take an old Niva in a heartbeat. Anything but the first generation and the last generation mustang are rolling turds.

I'm sure we'll see that the plane wasn't the problem. It was well taken care of, had great avionics, and is an all around decent plane. My guess would be to **** poor planning somewhere along the line.

Edit...

starting with packing the entire military leadership on a single plane...

News / Will todays tragedy effect the economy of Poland? [34]

After this incident when there is no stable government

The government is still very much intact.

The PM is still here, as is his entire cabinet.

97% of the Senat is still there.

98% of the Sejm will be back at work.

Piotr Wiesiołek is taking over running NBP... Monetary decisions are made by committee, which is still in place.

Off-Topic / Polish head of state plane crashed in middle of nowhere? [56]

1) Why would the majority of Polish government fly on the same old soviet trijet plane? Are you trying to save on gasoline?

They didn't, and it's only 20 years old. Just for reference, the two 747s that are used to transport Obama were built in '86. Nothing wrong with the aircraft.

The crazy aspect regarding the passengers is...why on earth would you transport the leaders of all branches of the military on the same flight. That is insane.

2) Why would anyone attempt to land a jet bigger than Boeing 727 at the airport size of an aircraft carrier on a foggy day?

I'm not familiar with any 2,5km carriers.

and thats you can say about it?

that your precious flying banger is not a Cessna and you understand what is going on in Polish politics?
nice

Yea, just because I don't agree with your "evil foreign non-polish corrupting anti-polish media" theory doesn't mean I'm in the dark on politics.
