History / Weapons of WWII (Poland and other countries) [239]

cope with being in a ww2 sub whilst under a depth charge attack......

I don't know how anyone could deal with that, you'd go bonkers for sure.
And all that time in such a confind space with other people would do my head in, but the noise of the water crushing up against the sub and then add people trying to blow you up.

An Irish man Seán Pilib Ó hUallacháin

invented the first fully submersible submarine the Fenian Ram

in the U.S, for the IRB in 1881 but it was never used.

Lets hear it for the U BOATS.....an awesome weapon at the start of the war

Absolutely.
There is something about a sub, I would not consider myself claustrophobic and being in an aeroplane doesn't bother me but the creaking and knowing the pressure would crush you like a tin can under a car wheel, I don't know something too life threatening about it.

News / Mass immigration to Poland - article and response [479]

In my previous post I expressed willingness to accept immigration from culturally related states of Eastern Europe.

So within eastern Europe people would be able to freely move around?
Obviously you are anti E.U. but do you think it is a bad idea if E.U. member states move around?

Of course this would be profitable from European perspective to attract the brightest resources from other continents but I don't think that their homelands would be affected positively by such outcome.

You have a point but I think it could be worked out without the brain drain.

I think a lot of the thinking on this subject is medieval, these are very different times and we need a different approach.
The world is smaller now, with more people and becoming more and more homogeneous in language, culture and if you care genes.
It is not a long term plan to have an insular "gated community" in this day and age.

Ethnicity based upon DNA, as you are fond of quoting (I call it Kennel papers)

:) Ha ha ha ha ha ha :)

So you think we should close the boarders?
What about close the towns and cities, after all that is what you are suggesting, same as family and nation.

But you do ive met you. In this timeless, endless universe, are you trying to fool me?

Or I am not god, never claimed I was.
So i am not trying to fool anyone.

1) I do not believe in the North Korean no entry policy.

2) I think that some freedoms of movements are essential.

3) I think, 'Complete boarder opening' does not seem realistic because it would take all (or most) countries to do it at the same time to even begin to work.

So I am left with partially open, on a number basis, especially to those that fulfil certain qualifications needed but open to everyone.

Edit* Basically, why should I be born in to such a privilege of being able to travel and work in practically any country?

You need a work permit

Yes and for most countries it is just a matter of the bureaucratic process and I can work there.
But people from that country can't.

travel visa to travel outside the EU.

Again no problem, I can get travel visa for most countries.
I have never been denied yet.

There are over 200 different nationalities resident in your country, of course they can come here.

Prove it.
So you are saying that 200 nations can live in Ireland easier than I can live in their country?
Talking rubbish again.

The Number of Countries in the World
By Most Accounts, There Are 195 Countries in the World
geography.about.com/cs/countries/a/numbercountries.htm

Yes but we discuss about immigration and not emigration. Do you as a citizen of Ireland (as I believe) would open Irish borders to immigrants from all over the world?

But I am in Poland.
So we are talking about immigration and emigration, it just depends on which side of the fence you are on.
I do not believe it is right that I, because of my birthplace, can go anywhere yet others can't.

Do you support open borders policy?

There is a one way open boarder policy i.e. I can go pretty much anywhere in the world and get a job there but not visa versa.

So perhaps you would like to rephrase your question.

News / Mass immigration to Poland - article and response [479]

I have travelled and worked in many different countries and I think it is a joke that I can go pretty much wherever I like but that the people in those countries can not, just as easily, go to the place I am from.

There is a huge imbalance in the world and I have read some of the posts on this thread and it makes me think that youz want to live in North Korea, not let anyone in or out, have this insulated and "safe" life.

Well that's not going to work either, we have to allow some freedoms of movement.
A lot of the moaning comes from the credit crunch, world crises and now that foreigners are no longer needed for the jobs throw them out, again a crappy argument.

You can't invite people to work for you and after a few years, when things go wrong throw them out, for many reasons but especially because they had nothing to do with creating these problems, they were invited.

Asylum seekers are not on holiday. Sure some smart arse is now going to talk about the percent that abuse the system but all systems are abused, there is no perfect system.

I am from Ireland and in our history it is typical to travel looking for work. Some places needed us and other places treated us as uneducated diseased rodents.

Rant over.

Their women had rights

Sure don't you have to, by law now, have 40% females on Corporate Board Seats, rather than the best person for the job?

But what you say is true, the Vikings did not just go around plundering and pillaging but had a culture and were the first to bring coinage to Ireland.

But this can be said for people out side of Europe too.

You are just reading what the politically correct educational system and the politically correct history books tell you.

You see this part makes it look like the 'education system' in our respective countries are there to misinform us about issues and makes you look like a paranoid conspiracy theorist.

That's why we are having a discussion here on the forum.

I think it is a relevant question and should be discussed more so as to prevent "white supremacy" and the like.

And lets face it, Norway without oil, would not be much except for another beautiful part of the world.

For that matter, ALL EUROPEAN countries qualify under what I just wrote above.

Why do you stop just at Europe?

I have just read Jared Diamond's "Guns, Germs, and Steel".

The prologue to the book opens with an account of Diamond's conversation with Yali, a New Guinean politician. The conversation turned to the obvious differences in power and technology between Yali's people and the Europeans who dominated the land for 200 years, differences that neither of them considered due to any genetic superiority of Europeans. Yali asked, using the local term "cargo" for inventions and manufactured goods, "Why is it that you white people developed so much cargo and brought it to New Guinea, but we black people had little cargo of our own?"

You are asking an interesting question but I would not jump to any conclusions.

UK, Ireland / Question about Irish-Polish similarities [25]

Anyways-- I was wondering what things in both cultures are really similar? These could be proverbs, jokes, drinking toasts, slang words etc.

The Irish use of the English language and the Polish language are very different.

1) they both are Catholic and for ages dominated by the Catholic church

And we have had a lot of trouble in our separate histories.

You might find this interesting JestemHaley : Celts in Poland.

I am Irish and live in Poland, I enjoy it here and I get on with most of the people very well.

The girl I was in a relationship with was the one that totally ignored me.

And you don't really want to be firends with her, it is the bird that you dated, kissed and she changed her mind about you, that you want to be friends with, right?

And these two experiences has made you come on here.
So, do you think it is a Polish thing?

How old are you?

hmmm i wudnt b so sure

I am.

The only girl to completely ignore me after a relationship was the Polish one.

But you never went out with her, you just saw her.

I am still confused as to who you did which with what to?
there were two girls, one you dated for months but you were never going out with and the other you were going out with until you became unemployed and hung around her, while she wanted to be with the guys she was living with and ended up with a black fella.

Am I getting this right at all?

It's a shame people feel the need to be hostile, I thought I'd share a few experiences.

So you expected sympathy and for us to tell you, "hey man, it is not you, it is POLISH WOMEN, they are evil!".

Tough.
