Food / Making American cheeses (Polish and EU ones are terrible!) [100]

fresh Wisconsin cheese curds

I like those - we use them in Yorkshire too.

They're actually really easy to make, just separate (full cream, not uht) milk with rennet, cut to a fairly large size, strain off the whey and dry over a couple of days. You can press them a little if you want extra squeaky.

I've been shuddering for the past half hour at the thought of that Kraft 'cheese' stuff.

"baked beans" I never understood the point of those things. Tinned salmon though, despite being unfashionable now, is actually very good - certainly better quality than tinned tuna.

But American factory-made 'cheese'? No. Just no.

"Even Biedronka has a perfectly good mature cheddar these days"
That's actually ok for cooking with. Typical Polish yellow cheese isn't since it doesn't melt properly.

American cheese? Yuk. I bought some once when living abroad somewhere. It was called Kraft Cheese, in a sort of block and was inedible, worse than the cheapest you could ever find in Britain.

Often. You need rennet, culture, a plastic form and a cheese press (all available on Amazon) and just need a coolish room to ripen it in - we don't use a chiller.

Through trial and error I can give you a few tips:

- Follow the recipe precisely - the way you cut the curd and the various timescales have a big effect on the end result.
- Make sure everything is sterile, cheesemaking is basically controlled decomposition so the only bacteria you want to be there are the bacteria you choose. Boil the cheesecloth first.

- If you're using a cheese press with no pressure gauge, less is more.
- Start with the easier kinds, a simple Farmhouse Cheddar or a Mexican Queso Fresco.
- Don't expect to make a big wheel of cheese - you would need a very large commercial sized pan to create the curd, a huge form, many gallons of milk and a giant press - small cheeses are easier.

A little trial and error and you'll have a result better than anything produced commercially here.

News / Closet homosexual politicians in Poland [83]

I'm sure you'll be fine without medical intervention Snotty as long as you stop hating yourself. Until then, and in the environment we live in, politicians will decide how much of their lives they wish to share with the public. Some will (and do) remain in the closet with or without a sham marriage, some will be (and are) more honest. This is reflected in the degree of honesty apparent in their political life.

Travel / Worth visiting Warsaw? [20]

Some interesting pictures, however it misses out a lot of interesting things and includes some banal ones. For a 'subjective guide' as it claims, it is certainly that. Still plenty left out though.

Work / I have to decide between two job offers, Berlin vs Wroclaw [44]

financially secure

Plenty of people manage well. In Europe (where the OP is from), there are state pensions, socialised healthcare etc. Those who don't have that often have family resources.

Presence or absence of a decent socialised economy in ones home country is no reason to come to or not to come to Poland, and often people have a very limited range of choices in life. You may have had a disappointing time in Poland, others have done well here.

hippie nonsense

Oh dear.

Work / I have to decide between two job offers, Berlin vs Wroclaw [44]

cash enough in the bank

There is far more to life than chasing a career or or worrying overly. Didn't you used to give English lessons in Lowicz or Skierniewice. I was almost flat broke and starting anew. I've got professional qualifications though I came here partly because I'd had enough of that field back home and wanted something different. In fact never worked in that exact field in Poland. Nevertheless, materially and in every other sense, things have worked out well.

quality of life is virtually synonymous with savings potential.

The love of money is the root of all evil.

savings potentia

I doubt anyone comes here to save large amounts of money (though I know some people who certainly have done well that way, including myself).

In terms of quality of life, it's a great place to be.

Work / I have to decide between two job offers, Berlin vs Wroclaw [44]

Moving here to Poland was probably the best decision in my life, and I can therefore only recommend it. There are doubtless easier countries to be in (none of them really an option at the time) and there are many many worse places to settle. Both myself and my other half (who I met here) came here from very different countries and the best part of three decades later have never regretted this for even one second.

Work / I have to decide between two job offers, Berlin vs Wroclaw [44]

Certain nationalities have a long history of emigration, are quick to build support networks and Poland (including Wroclaw) is increasingly a popular destination. The more of this the better.

A friend came here as a student (and completed his course) borrowed money from within the community and now has a very successful business.

Posts, in this thread and many many others.

anyone who really wishes to come here will not be dissuaded from doing so.

Indeed. Thousands of people come here yearly and most have a very positive experience.

you might as well be back in Kolkata or Lagos.

I'm Italian

a different story

Wroclaw is a great place for anyone to be, wherever they're from. A thriving city, good infrastructure, plenty to do and see and not expensive. It has a real 'mitteleuropa' feeling.

One significant thing about Wroclaw is that going out (if you stay out of tourist traps) can be cheap and fun. There are also a lot of good places for day trips, and concerning rock music, the very large student scene means that there's something happening most of the time.

In that case Wroclaw sounds a good choice. If you don't mind a room in a shared flat, you'll have more money. Berlin is a great city (and a good music scene) however your wages will go further in Wroclaw, and it's a thriving city with a young population.

Personally, I'd prefer Berlin, for the nightlife and culture, however Wroclaw is pretty good too, and the wage is ok for that city.

living like a cockroach

On the national average wage, people don't live "like a cockroach". I know people who earn far less than that here in Warsaw and live OK. In Wroclaw, most people get that or less. A youngish person who's happy to share a flat would find their flat mates earn less.

god Dominic, you really sound depressed.

Depressed or trolling.

masturbation

If he's looking at jobs with that wage range I doubt he expects the high-life. I also suspect the OP is youngish. Nevertheless, Wroclaw is a much better option than Berlin.

He could do a lot worse than click on your username and check out the majority of your posts, trying to deter people from coming to Poland.

Is 4300 enough for Poland?

Round about average, though low for an expat. Half will go in rent. Nevertheless, it would stretch further than 1350 in Berlin, which is very low.

You get one each year?

Depends on the job, however usually no.

Anything else to consider? Wroclaw is a nice city, on a more human scale than Berlin and generally considered a good place to live. A lot depends on what you like doing while not at work.

Love / Urgent Relationship help - wife wants to stay in Poland [118]

common theft

It is not theft, since he found the item in his own marital home and nobody else has presumably asserted ownership. Nor has he attempted in any way to deprive a claimant of ownership.

Travel / Suggest me some good clubs/bars in Warsaw [17]

TO MEET YOUNG GIRL IN WARSZAWA?

The guides or brownies come to mind, however you should be aware of the legal age of consent. If you want to meet a young woman rather than a young girl there are plenty of discotheques round town.

Love / English proposing to a Polish lady [31]

@Towarzysz
Same here. Sounds like a lot of people down there getting trapped in marriages without really having lived.

Perhaps the difference is regional.

Love / English proposing to a Polish lady [31]

In Krakow every university educated person I know seems to be married/engaged before they are 25/26.

I can't think of anyone I know who recently married that young. I've been to a few weddings here in Warsaw over the past couple of years and none were under 30.
