Law / Stopped by the Poland's Police for no reason while walking at night [94]

Looking straight in the eyes is a sign of honesty. Being unable to meet your interlocutor's gaze, it is an indicator of guilty conscience,

Yes. It's normal. Police (detectives more than ones on traffic duty etc) are very skilled at picking up clues from the eye movements of people they're interviewing.

Well in the U.S.A. if you stare at a cop in his eyes during questioning it could be perceived as a challenge of authority.

Normal people do not avoid someone's eye, police or not. It comes across as shifty.

Never talk to police. Never discuss first. Answer yes no only

This is generally good advice.

The OP said he or she's a medical student. I'm not sure if the same protocol applies for them as doctors, however there are special procedures that the police follow if they stop someone (even for committing a misdemeanour) and that person is a doctor.

Law / Lviv born. Can Polish ancestry be claimed? [34]

normalization

Read up on normalisation in 1920s Poland. Something that was taken very seriously.

A large proportion of the population of Polesie claimed to be "tutejszy" (local) rather than Polish or other as their nationality.

I know a family in Polesie now whose national and cultural identity is far from clear cut.

Law / Lviv born. Can Polish ancestry be claimed? [34]

That view you just tried to express is certainly 'interesting' to say the least. The Polish government, who gave him the Order of the White Eagle, Poland's highest civilian award (among other honours) would strongly disagree.

Who to believe? A teenager in Canada who's never been to Poland or Professor Norman Davies of the Jagellonian University...

You really should read what he's written about identity and ancestry in rural Poland, especially the drive to normalisation.

You don't know what you are talking about.

Evidently more than yourself. Read Professor Davies on the matter; he covers it exhaustively and includes primary sources.

Law / Lviv born. Can Polish ancestry be claimed? [34]

There you go again with the redundant sarcasm Bieggers. Why not read up about the government's drive towards cultural normalisation during the immediate post-independence years. Norman Davies wrote well about this, including about the area round Lviv and about people's ethnicity ancestry, identity and citizenship.

It's actually quite interesting.

Australia / Grape wine from Poland for sale in Australia? [17]

I doubt it's on sale there - the drinkable stuff isn't even very popular here in Poland now. You might try a Polish delicatessen, that's probably the best bet.

Australia / Grape wine from Poland for sale in Australia? [17]

Is there any other types of wine that are not grape based then

Yes. There are fruit based wines. A few good ones exist, however most are sold on the bottom shelf behind the counter with street drinkers in mind. There's also sparkling pear-based 'wine' (usually with Russian writing on the label in order to suggest that it's 'soviet champagne') which is very cheap and barely drinkable.

Australia / Grape wine from Poland for sale in Australia? [17]

It's a niche market, currently bought largely as a novelty (and generally sold as quickly as it's made). I hope that changes with time, however now, there's not much to distinguish it from an average but decent German wine except the novelty value.

The best place to try it is at the annual wine festival in Zielona Gora. A few years ago that was the only way to sample it due to the excise issue not allowing it at the time to be sold retail.

I really wouldn't think any is available in Australia. Exporting wine there would be a bit like sending coals to Newcastle.

polish wine

It does exist, however very little is produced and due to issues with excise duty, even less is sold on the open market. I'd be very very surprised if any reaches Australia.

If you haven't drunk any, you may be interested to know that it's white wine, very much in the German style (the wine growing region was in Germany pre-1945). There is (and your local Polish grocer may stock it) red wine with herbs and various chemicals in, made for heating up. That's just mixed and labelled in Poland though. The grapes are grown elsewhere.

News / Which French candidate for president will be best for Poland? [512]

It's not a secret that the FN is backed by Russia

It's completely open and a matter of public record.

Emmanuel Macron's funding is however from entirely within France, and unlike the fascist Le Pen, completely transparent.

Law / Lviv born. Can Polish ancestry be claimed? [34]

as most inhabitants of Galicia had little to no comprehension that they spoke "Polish" or "Ukrainian". Ethnic differences were minimal,

This is true. Before the late 1920s very few of the ordinary people round there claimed any sort of Polish or Ukrainian identity - they were just locals.

Food / Garlicky butter-cheese spread - this is a trick I learnt in Poland. [16]

Incidentally, with the buttermilk (the stuff that separates right away, not the little streaks of it in the lump of butter that make it go off if you don't wash them out), you can do a lot. I'm no fan of drinking it, however it works well in a lot of recipes - I like it in soda bread.

Law / Stopped by the Poland's Police for no reason while walking at night [94]

is it a lawful act for police to stop people in the street and take there info ?

They do that here. Sometimes it's to prove they were actually working rather than sitting in a police car doing nothing. They're more likely to stop people at the start or at the end of their shift.

Ps ( we have brown skin )

The Kraków police have long had a bit of a reputation for that, however they're a lot better than they used to be.

Food / American baking products (bread, shortening, etc) [19]

I use either Palma, or lard (refined smalec). The latter is what Americans call shortening, just not the vegetable kind (which you can't make at home - it's an industrial process).

the best, creamy, fresh-tasting butter imaginable. Try it, I know you'll be crazy about it!

We do this with that 42% smietanka (double cream) from Biedronka. Remember - this is quite important - to wash it thoroughly twice between your fingers, squeezing it under a tap otherwise the maslanka in it will make it go off quickly. Add some salt if you like that or want to make it last a bit longer. You can do it with a hand held blender, or in a food processor.

You're right, it really is the best, creamy, fresh-tasting butter imaginable.

History / Polish-Hungarian border exchange? [60]

Slovakia is Slovakian, not Hungarian. The people aren't Hungarian, so no chance of any change, nor is Poland likely to cede any territory.

Almost certainly by plane. When you get the package depends on the system in Turkey, since the package is now there.

News / Closet homosexual politicians in Poland [83]

desease

Don't be daft. Homosexuality (including among closeted politicians) has existed since the dawn of time and we're all not only still here, but the also have an unsustainably high population. Even Jaroslaw Kaczynski is still here. Nor does it have any known effect on fertility. The conservative politician Daniel Kawczynski has several kids before he married his husband.

For all your neuroses and 'issues' Snotty, your like or dislike of something achieves absolutely zero.
