News / Is it possible that Polish president was assasinated? If so then, by whom? [921]

If it comes to be that the pilot wanted the runway lights to be activated and they weren't, there will be hell to pay for the Russian authorities. If that was a material factor then such oversight is unforgivable. They knew the plane was coming in but seemed to be underprepared.

Remember, there is a huge difference between approach lighting and runway lighting. If there was a request to turn on runway lighting...that would be shocking in itself and would mean that the crew knew exactly that were f*cking up in a big way. It would mean that they busted the minimums by a huge margin and were hunting for the runway in extremely low visibility. This is all making me sick to my stomach to be honest.

News / Is it possible that Polish president was assasinated? If so then, by whom? [921]

The first strange piece of information that has come out was that the airport at Smolensk reportedly does not have an Instrument Landing System (ILS).

That's not very odd. Quite a few Russian military airfields (and Polish ones) use radar approaches. There is also an NDB approach available.

Sabotage could be confusing QNH and QFE. The TAWS and the radar altimeter would also have to be sabotaged. Bad charts would have to be provided as well.

Put simply, the extreme right now rules Poland, and people widely considered marginal and dangerous even a year ago are now within the corridors of power.

I don't understand this entire paragraph. The government is PO. Opinion polls were already showing that PO probably wasn't going to have a problem with taking the head of state role either...

And then there's the weather. That's an elaborate one to pull off, sabotaging every vital navigational system on the plane...and firing up the weather generating machine.

I expect that next week we'll hear something about an NDB approach that was incorrectly flown. I'm guessing that they also busted the minimums by a great deal. I already feel sorry for the family of the crew.

News / The chances for Warsaw to become capital of eventual Slavic confederation? [183]

Like Greece... and Iceland... and Spain... and Portugal?

Iceland isn't part of the EU. For Greece, Spain, and Portugal, the EU had a huge economic benefit. I don't think anyone would have a problem if those countries were to give the money back and leave the EU.

Food / Bread Baking in Poland [65]

Freshly baked flavorful bread with a texture that doesn't remind me of cotton candy. Yea, sounds horrible.

News / Kaczynski to be buried at Wawel ?! [289]

As for Lech being burried at Wawel,... Well, if King Michał Korybut Wiśniowiecki, whose greatest achievement was to stuff his mouth with food until he kicked the bucket, could be burried there, then why not Lech?

I guess the question is, was that a mistake?

What have you done for Poland, oh Polish Patriot, to even have a say in saying who is, and who is worthy?

Just wondering, could you maybe give us an example of what one needs to do to be a true Polish patriot like yourself?

News / Russian air traffic controllers ignored communication protocol of Polish pilots? [194]

To Jed: thanks for the graphics; lots of good info/details there.. has got me thinkin'... can you tell if there's a rise just east of that secondary road (the 'loop' just east of the main highway)? Looks like the trees got clipped a lot shorter there...

The terrain dips about 300m out and then slopes back up.

News / Is it possible that Polish president was assasinated? If so then, by whom? [921]

Just an interesting little sidenote. During the second world war, Smolensk was a Luftwaffe airfield. In 1943, Hitler was visiting the airbase and Col. Tresckow had a bomb smuggled onto Hitler's aircraft, set to detonate while it was in the air. Unfortunately the bomb failed to detonate due to the cold temperature in the cargo hold.

Smolensk...

Oh, back to this lame-brained argument, are we?
Of course, because no proof is needed. After all, dead men can't talk. How convenient.

I think the argument of ordering the plane down is probably as likely dumping fuel in a Tu154. On the other hand, I think there was pressure for the crew to put the plane down. You can see that in the planning of the trip (late departure leaving no room for error). This will go down as pilot error, but the more important question is why did that happen? My personal belief is that safety came secondary to the mission. Interested to see how the Polish AF punished past infractions that did not lead to an accident. This wouldn't be the first time this has happened.

The most interesting is another thing. Fog... visibility... navigation... Bulls''t! According to what I heard in the last 20 minutes, they would have landed in Smolensk even if there was a herd of cows or the Saint Mary herself on the runway!

If that is true, I think I'll drop a couple of tears at how avoidable all this was.

Polish AF will have some serious reflection time ahead of them.

But I guess times change, traditions change and we have to draw conclusions from what
we see, and maybe (JUST MAYBE) Germany is treating Poland more seriously than France
does. And, maybe (just maybe), the relations with Poland are more important to Germany
than to France?

Of course. When you look at the connection between Germany and Poland (good and bad), it's way tighter than the connection to France. Always has been.

othing's forgotten friends, nothing's forgotten.

Does that mean that Poland isn't a friend of Macedonia when they lost their president? Not a friend of America after Oklahoma City and 9/11? No friend of the countries affected by the Tsunami in 2004? No friend of Rwanda? Not a friend of Russia after all the terrorist attacks? Haiti, Bangladesh, Pakistan, China?

News / Kaczynski to be buried at Wawel ?! [289]

It will be quiet on LK's funeral ... GB, IE, Scandinavian airspace is already closed. NL will close from 1900 today. B's will be progressively closed from 1430 today. And I've read that the north of D is also affected. It's unknown how long the closure will last but looking at the prevailing winds in the coming days, it doesn't look good.

Huge ash clouds, a gaggle of heads of state... Lets see if I can get to Germany on Sunday...

and to the PO electoral (liberals, sodomits)

Please, we're sodomites, not sodomits. We're touchy about that.
